I figured what the heck? Why not have a movie tournament for the year 1998 since we already have them for many of the years surrounding it. So here we go. If it dies because of overload of tournaments then oh well.
For the first round I'll take 15 total votes then go on to the next so as to hurry it along.

Long. Yes. Melodramatic. Yes. Overpowering and relentless score. Yes.
How are these two seperate films again?
I'm sorry people, but I'm going with Meet Joe Black (9/10 or A-). I actually loved it, I was really surprised with it and have seen it a total of three times. It is a long movie, but it is really engrossing. I loved the beautiful Claire Forlani in it and the cinematography was wonderful. And yes, it even brought a tear to my eye. I think it's an underrated flick, but maybe that's just me. I never saw Saving Private Ryan, I'm not a big fan of war flicks or Tom Hanks, and I don't care how great some people say it is, it didn't look that good to me. Besides, I may as well help out the wonderful Meet Joe Black, since it's obvious Saving Private Ryan will win anyway. This match-up is so not fair ;).

Yes. It was. This is my fault. I don't know why I put it in the list.
Elizabeth won 11-6 though. I don't think we'll redo this round just because Elizabeth would very likely beat any movie I put up against it.

Gods and Monster
my vote is for Life is Beautiful
Nate6

Gods and Monsters...Life is Beautiful is a crappy, sentimental, false, overacted piece of excrement.
And the IMDb may say Affliction is a 1997 film, but it was only shown at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. It wasn't released in the USA until December of 1998 and James Coburn won an Oscar in March 1999 for the year 1998 for it, so yes, I think you were right in considering it a 1998 film.
