The heads screaming, The wheelies, Dorothy getting hooked up the the electro shock machine.... how many of you schmoes were scarred from life by this gem. Now I loved the Oz books because they were dark and I loved the movie return to oz but it really scared the poo out of me everytime I watched it. I was talking with a bunch of my friends at a summer camp last summer and at least 3 of them said return to oz was the scariest movie they layed eyes upon as a young child. Was that by chance? I don't think so i think a large number of children from the 80's have this movie buried in their psyche. So anyone out there remember their reaction to this movie as a wee one?

That electro shock machine was damned scary, as was the wheelies, which scared me at 16. Oh man, Return to Oz had the queen who put different heads on. Now THAT is terror.

Ha, I loved that movie, it didn't scare me at all. I loved the characters and the story. I first saw it when I borrowed it from my local library, I would often borrow that thing again and again. I loved how it was so different from the original and refused to "Bull Sh*t Me!" But if there's anything about it, anything at all, that scared me just the littlest bit would've had to have been that Scarecrow, who looked like a clown.

I LOVE this movie! To this day! I think it`s one of the most underrated movies ever, and it`s MUCH closer to the spirit of the books than the classic original "Wizard of Oz".
Plus it has a great music score.
This movie is on DVD, and lemme tell you, the visuals really hold up, the movie looks great in wide-screen.

As for being scary - I know lots of kids were scared by this movie, but I was never scared by it (even when I was little). But get this - the old "Wizard Of Oz" DID scare me!! I remember hating "Wizard Of Oz" and being really frightened by the Wicked Witch - yet I loved "Return To Oz" and it didn scare me at all!!

-------------------------------------------
And for the record, The Time sucked.

Actually Return was closer to the spirit of the books than the classic musical. The Oz books are DARK in many ways. It was long rumored Tim Burton was going to do a HBO series based on the original books, but I think it fell thru.

That Pumpkin headed guy freaked me out.

I barely remember watching this movie as a kid, but I do recall cowering in fear during a scene in a subway station or something like that. Well it was an underground building anyway...

Thanks for posting about this movie. Yeah, it was messed up, and it did frighten me a little bit when I was a wee one. I liked the wheelers, and the opening scene in the hospital. Creepy. The lady with the heads was cool as well. I consider this to be an average movie, but it's a lot of fun to watch, just to see how weird it is. Faruza Balk is creepy.

yeah its eery as hell when you see all her buddies from the series locked up in stone. Remember the part where all her friends kept choosing wrong at the end of the movie and were turned into crazy pieces of furniture by that claymation king?

I found it really scary when the Queens head suddenly wakes up and screams: "Dorothy Gaaaaaaalleeeee!" oh that gave me the willies.

Now its one of my favorite fantasy movies.

Dunno about Return to Oz. Never seen it. But the flying monkey familiars belonging to the Wicked Witch in the first movie gave me nightmares. Brrrrrr.

I haven't seen the movie, but I was reading up on this at IMDB after looking at thia topic and I came across an interesting fact. Unless the sources got it wrong, (which is known to happen on the IMDB) Steven Norrington, the director of Blade and the upcoming League of Extraordinary Gentleman had an acting role in Return to Oz...not much else to say...

The Original Wizard of oz was scary too. Whats not scary about flying monkeys, witches melting, and a giant talking supernatural head.

Well remember dude, this movie was based on the L. Frank Baum book series, it wasn`t even neccesarily a sequel to the movie "Wizard Of Oz". Though Disney promoted it that way.
That`s why Dorothy`s freinds etc. look different - they look more like the illustrations from the original books.

yes they do Elgyn but the movie is called "RETURN TO OZ" as most sequels have RETURN in the title

I could be wrong but I think "Return To Oz" was the title of one of the old books.
Anyways dude I`m not trying to start an argument with you or anything - Disney definetly DID promote it as a sequel to the classic "Wizard...", which was the movie`s downfall IMO.

I remember I was only 8 or 9 when I first rented it! Man, it sure gave me the creeps. I remember I was genuinely scared in parts. My mom hated it for obvious reasons, but looking back on it, I find it to be one of the most overlooked fantasy films ever.

Yes, the second book was called Return to Oz, and the movie is sort-of based on it. Like the book had the pumpkin head dude in it, and I think there was a plot about a queen who could replace her head. It's been a while though, so I could be wrong about that.

Although almost all of these books are disturbing, not for those really impressionable wee ones....

They were my favorite books as a kid. Which might explain how I turned out.

No, it's a combo of the second and third books, entitled The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. L. Frank Baum wrote 14 in all. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I haven't seen this movie in sooooooo long but I just remembered it scared the crap outta me. I can only remember a few scenes though. Didn't Dorothy get to Oz by a river or something, and weren't there sandwhiches in the trees? Pretty weird...

That's right, thanks Elgyn. I can also remember a shooting star in the beginning and a strange mirror.

This movie scared me a lot when I was a kid, the whole thing is so dark & has a nasty feel to it.

I watched it again a couple of weeks ago & I still think it has a creepier feel to it than most of the recently released horrors I've seen.

The wizard of ox itself, the wiz and return to Oz are ALL SCARY. the original is a horror movie in disguise, so creepy--the witches and all the urban legends behind the movie itself. seriously terrifying

RETURN TO OZ....
I am just glad it was darker than THE WIZARD OF OZ.
Even when I was young THE WIZARD OF OZ was just to light for me I needed something stronger something more sureal.
RETURN TO OZ was an introduction into the winding path that led to old nicks basment and I have been walking down it ever since trying to find the shadows and chasing the spectres.
Still in my fear hungry mind at least I know one of the films that started it.
Also the film NEVER ENDING STORY had some darkend moments what do you think.
