View Full Version : Your Top 3 Scariest Video Games And Why

1. Silent Hill: So far, this has to be the scariest video game ever. The eerie sensation of the music throughout each level is tempting and freaky. The gore is realistic and believable, yet unknowingly curious. Some parts of Silent Hill also make you jump the first time you play it. Silent Hill is not a town i'd want to live in! Therefore, it gets my vote as number one. (By the way, the video game is scary, yet crap!)

2. Resident Evil: Very similar to Silent Hill in ways; The gore is fantastic and the sounds that the zombies make are unusual and scary. The storyline isn't as good as Silent Hill- but because of gore and sound- Resident Evil gets number two.

3. Mortal Kombat 4: The first 3D version of the MK series. Other versions are more of a 2D/human like image, but MK4 is 3D and fresher which makes the picture and graphical gameplay more realistic and terrifying. The characters are interesting and unique in their own way. This is probably one of the goriest games going around with tons of blood and guts. (fatalities)
The music is also very gothic, and Mortal Kombat 4 does well to get number three.

Honorable mentions....
Doom, Alien VS Predator and Grand Theft Auto VC

Yes. I must admit, Silent Hill IS crap. But as I said, it has a great storyline and is all round quite scary. Could make a good movie!!
Which horror games do you think should be made into movies?

Resident Evil: Code Veronica for Dreamcast is the best RE, I'd say, and definitely the scariest. Silent Hill is pretty scary, too. I don't know about a third, although I do get scared when armies attack me in Ages of Empires II ;).

Alone In The Dark - creepy visuals and creepy music!

Blood for PC - Those Phantasms that come screaming at you within the "Overlooked Hotel" ALWAYS makes the hair on the back of the neck stand on end. Also, hearing the distant tick tock of the grandfather clocks throughout is also pretty creepy. The severed heads strewn about that keeps opening and closing its eyes at you is creepy. Awesome game!! Great atmosphere

Aliens Vs. Predator - Very tense!

I'm not much of a video game person, and I'm always about 5 systems behind what everyone else usually has. My favourite systems are the good old ones, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and good old original Nintendo.

Anyway, that said, I was reminded of two great games for original Nintendo when I saw this thread. A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. God, those games were great. Does anyone else remember them? They actually did scare me when I was little. A Nightmare on Elm Street was really creepy, because you were just walking along the street and then all of a sudden, it said Freddy's coming to get you! up on the screen, and then he would come out and you had to fight him. In the game, you also got to fight the Freddy snake! Great game. In Friday the 13th, you got to be the counselor, and Jason used to come running out now and then and attack you with his chainsaw. It scared me and my brother so much. Ahh, memories.

Also, I must mention a game for Sega Genesis that really creeped me out when I first played it (I think it was sega). It was called Splatterhouse 5, I think, and it was really, really creepy. There were all sorts of monsters and such, and it was extremely gory. Anyone else heard of it?

On a side note, one game I have played for PS 2 is Grand Theft Auto Vice City. And I was just wondering, Spitfire, you find it scary? I'm not insulting you or anything, I was just wondering why. When I played that game, I thought it was just pure, unadulterated fun. I love beating up the paramedics and stealing the ambulance, but now I'm getting off track, so I'm going to go.

blood was just fun. but like you said, them phantasms always made me jump.

i gotta add blood 2-the chosen as well. i think its a hell of alot scarier than blood. i actally cant play it at night lol.

Resident Evil 2. When I was younger I could never get past the beginning because every time you'd first see the licker crawl past the window, I would turn the game off.

There's that one part in Blood in an early level when you are coming into a haunted train station. As you approach a ghost voice booms on the PA announcing a train arrival or departure. That part made me jump the first time I played that level.

OOoops!! Sorry Pumpkinhead. I absolutely ' DO NOT ' find Grand Theft Auto VC scary in any way at all. (I kind of sound like a pussy now)
I was mainly refering to the gore factor and how it could scare very young children. Its not that I found it scary. Sorry, my mistake. (shit)

Bram Stoker's Dracula: The Boardgame is frequently scary at times. My nan has it and about 4 years ago when our family gathered around to play it, I was kind of freaked out with all the eerie music, the night-time rules, the vampire fangs and all.
It is kind of like the game, TAG exept there are vampires and you must bite you'r victims.
(I was lucky by being one of the vampires, so it was my job of doing most of the scaring!)
It is a cross between Monopoly, TAG and the usage of a Ouija Board. Overall, DAMN scary.

Probably all the Resident Evil Games.
Usally when you play video games, you always have that background music to keep you motivated. But on RE and Silent hill, its just eerie sounds and noises, sometimes scary, freaky music.

So when I play those, I just turn on Nirvana. :D :D

If you want absolute terror, for the love of god buy Clocktower. It is such a scary/disturbing/fantastic videogame that has been pushed into obscurity recently. It's about a man with a giant pair of scissors who is slashing up people in an office building (one setting) and you have to try to escape. FUCKING JUMPY AND SCARY!

Track it down, you will not regret it.

I liked the first Blair Witch game, Rustin Parr. The whole first section is one of the creepiest I've ever played! Also Nocturne by the same team had some great horror and jump moments.

Never really liked the Resident Evil series as all too often they're more reliant on a bad game camera and awful controls for their scares, they are getting better though...

Both the Aliens Vs Predator games deserve credit for the way they rack up tension, especially with the motion detector on...

I'd have to say Silent Hill 2 because of it's intensely spooky-ass storyline, nods to Resident Evil...

And all the evolutions of Doom, for keeping me guessing at what's around every corner...

Actually that was one of the cultists coming over the PA. There is a ghost announcer saying "All Aboard" as you enter the train on the next level.

Also, the creepiest moment is in a brand new mod called "Bloodlines" and it is AWESOME! In one level, there is this old condemned house and at the bottom of the stairs you can hear the distant cries of a baby upstairs. Creepy as shit! It's a very well done mod and there's even a scene where you jump through a window into a new dimension and you all of a sudden hear the Twilight Zone theme playing, everything turns dark and a window pans towards you and crashes just like the TZ opening!! ANother level has you stuck in an old film. You actually hear the film running, the level is in black and white, and the light stutters jsut like from a film projector. Very neat! I still paly this game.

Actually, if you're into camp, Blood delivers! It has all kinds of references to horror movies with many quotes uttered by the main character Caleb (The Zombie cultist cowboy from the 1800's), Levels with camp Crytal Lake, The Overlook Hotel from The Shining, Zombies saying "Brains" from ROTLD, posessed hands and bloated butcher zombes saying "I'll swallow your soul" and "Join Us!" There's a haunted carnival which is truly kick ass, a scene with a frozen Jack from The Shining, and even Freddy's shirt, hat, and claws hanging in a closet.

The music is awesome as well. Theres a theme that sounds just like the music from the 80's "Monsters" tv show as well as a "Tales From The Darkside" type theme as well.

If you want a damn good time, you need to check out this gem from 97'. You can find it on E-Bay for like $5 or so. I still play this game because of it's wonderful horror atmosphere. Much better than Duke Nukem 3D if you ask me. You horror people cannot go wrong with this one. So go set some cultists on fire with a lodged flare from the flare gun then gib him with the pitchfork till your heart's content!

My top five are...

SILENT HILL 2

Its just so fucked up. The atmosphere makes the game what it is, as I thought it wasnt the greatest. The places were all the same.

RESIDENT EVIL

The original on the PS One was mind blowing at the time, who could fotget the first time you encountered the Hunter?

DOOM

Playing that alone in the dark at two in the morning was one fucked up experience, it freaked me out. I couldn't sleep.

HALF-LIFE

Again not a creeper straight away but once the game goes on and the quietness of it all thats when the hairs start to stand up...oh yeah and when those face hugger things come flying out of nowhere.

SILENT HILL

Who could forget that damn crackling radio...and THAT phone call in the school.

Eeeh, Silent Hill 2 has to be the scariest, though RE: Nemesis was really scary too,I regret I haven`t played Clive Barkers Undying, but have heard great stuff about it. Haven`t played any Blair Witches either.....Well I remember Doom and Prince of Persia were scary when I was young...... By the way, has anybody played a fighting game called Thrill Kill. Well it`s much gorier then Mortal Kombat, it`s "fatalities" are often more brutal (one guy, Tormentor has one where Hellraiser-style hooks come from walls and rip a guy apart) The characters are really dark and Psycho (all of them are some maniac killers sent to hell).....Well that`s a really cool gorey game, which has pretty good gameplay, but often not so good graphics....

Silent Hill 1 - oh man, i played this at night and i was freaked out
Silent Hill 2 - same as the first one. such an eerie mood
Alien Resurection - Old PSX game that scared me cause something always jumped out of the corners in the dark!

Whenever this topic comes up, I bring up the Japanese Import Sweet Home for NES.
Whenever this topic comes up, I say how it was the originator of the genre that includes RE and Silent Hill.
Whenever this topic comes up, noone has ever heard of this game.
Whenever this topc comes up, I sulk in the corner.

No but seiously this game is downright creepy. You're a team of 5 people who are looking for frescas in a mansion of a recently deceased person who died under less than concrete methods. Each one of the 5 has one special implement that is needed to beat the game, but for each implement there is a backup. You form 2 teams and then split up, If you get to far apart you can't make it to help the otehr team say when they fall down a hidden part and they die. Done. no second lives. No continues, just like real life. gives me creeps jus tthinking about htis game.

Doom - A true classic. I remember many moments where I hear a creature right behind me, I'm getting slashed to death and I nearly scream my head off and I slash him to death with a chainsaw!

Aliens Vs. Predator 2 - The first one scared the crap outta me, but the second one is even BETTER! Play a space Marine and don't tell me you don't at least get the slightest case of the willies playing it. Make sure the lights are off, the sound is high (and good) and get ready for quite a thrill ride!

Clive Barker's Undying - I only played the demo, but I was very impressed with it. It was a tough one for me to try and play.

1) Doom (The Series) While not the first First person Shooter it was one of the most popular. While I didn't find it "scary" the whole theme was just too cool! Zombies, demon, giant cyber-spiders, rivers of blood, bodies mounted to walls

2) Nocturne I don't know to many people who have played this game. To start I really don't like 3rd person style games. Probably since some of the older ones left a lot to be desired in character control. I bought this game becuase:

1) It had an M rating
2) Cool settings 1930's -1940's
3) Cool stories

This game has an excellant background story, neat weapons and naked vampires ;)

Bascially you play the part of Stranger, yeah thats what everyone calls him. You're a bad mofo with dual .45s and a complete disgust of everything that is not human.

There are four different missions and you fight everything from zombies, werewolves, vampires, creatures that give a nod to Cthulu/Lovecraft and an assortment of demons.

3) Blood How much time did I waste on this game. FPS with a major horror theme! While the graphics were not as good as some of the games today you had a Resurrected trench coat wearing cowboy with "Ash" one-liners. A cool array of weapons at your disposal (ahhhhh it burns, it burns ;) ). What you are up against: Cultist, 2 differnet types of zombies, spiders, phantoms, severed hands, giant ticks.

While Blood 2 had some better graphics I think they fell into the same whole that Ravensoft did with Soldier of Fortune 2. They spent too much time worrying about the gore and it made for too many bugs in game play.

Honorable Mentions:

1) Quake 1 and 2 - Gotta love the pentegrams and Cthulu themes, and great atmosphere of the games

2) Blair Withc Series - All three are good solid games, although the second one is a little short and if I had paid big bucks for it I would have been pissed (It came with the Blair Witch Box set). The games have a lot of background into the wholes Blair mythos.

3) Duke Nukem 3 - While this one is more Sci-Fi based there are a lot of nods to Aliens and other Sci-Fi greats. Can't wait for the next one, Duke Nukem Forever.

I CAN'T BELIEVE SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ARE KNOCKING SILENT HILL!!!!!! The two Silent Hill games still scare me to this day, scare me to the point that no movie has ever done, and here is why.

Silent Hill isn't a game you can watch someone play... You will be bored to tears when you watch someone play this, but to be the gamer... It scares the shit out of you. The atmosphere the sound.... The way that you have no idea where a creature is and all you can hear is static.... UGH! Creepy stuff.

But it is a pretty boring game if you watch someone play it, you aren't immersed in the game as much if you play it with a lot of people because it loses it magic... Heres how Silent Hill should be played.

1. No strategy guide (Tell's you when you will jump.... GAY!!!)
2. No one in the house (Trust me, you will shit yourself.)
3. A good stereo on the TV.
4. Big TV (Sit close too, i know mom said not to but trust me it's worth it.)
5. Turn up the volume.
6. Turn out the lights.
7. Make sure you play it at around midnight or like 3 in the morning, when every creepy sound outside makes you jump.

I assure you if you play Silent Hill 2 like this, you wouldn't be able to play it for more then like half an hour.... Oh god that game creeps me out.

And for all you kids who don't like it for it's lack of action, the 3rd one will be more action oriented... And probably less scary.

Oh another scary ass game is Clive Barker's Undying, I can't play that game at all at night... OH god that game creeps me out.

And yeah, Thrill Kill was cool. I liked Cleetus (the cannibal) too, but he wasn`t really good character to play with.
Tormentor looked cool too........
But I think my favourite character was dr.Faustus - cool design, cool tricks, cool story, good to play with.....

Off the topic a little bit, but.....Are there some rumors about a sequal.? Somebody just has to do a sequal.....

Top 5 - Scariest Games I’ve played COUNTDOWN

5 Half Life
While not scary throughout the game this is very spooky for the first half and has a terrific story and excellent gameplay.

4 AVP
Excellent creepy atmosphere and piss-your-pants jolt frights and the best gameplay you can imagine.

3 Clock Tower
This is really really scary. It’s a bit like a really refined version of that old game Halloween. You basically have to wonder round the building looking for an exit or makeshift weapons such as fire extinguishers or places to hide while a terrifying serial killer known only as “The Scissor Man” is in the building somewhere… looking for you!!!

2 Silent Hill 2
I know what hell is. For I have met with Mr Conehead.

1 Silent Hill
IMO the scariest game of all time. Every bit as good as it’s sequel, if not slightly better IMO. The time shifts are really creepy.

Honorable mentions:
Quake – Not very scary. The music depressed me.
Nocturne – Bad gameplay. Uncontrollable characters. 3rd person shooters don’t work unless they auto-aim when firing. A shame coz it’s a great concept.
Undying – Good, scary, but way too much reading for my liking.
The Thing – Great, creepy scares. Who do you trust?
Thrill Kill – I would kill to play this game but those fuckers EA (Electronic Arts) games bought out Virgin games and then refused to release it because they didn’t want such a sick game associated with them. Cunts!
AVP2 – Haven’t played yet but as soon as I upgrade my computer I will.

There's absolutely NOTHING like it in the entire world.. Makes me wish that the world would get overrun by zombies so I could go kick some ass!

I think the Resident Evil series is the scariest. For me, it is the subtle music (the film was way off from the games), like the police station music in RE2. I only own part two on 64, but i watch my friend play the others, freaky stuff.

there are like 4 sequals coming in the series...

Resident Evil Zero out (ithink)
Resident Evil Online Fall 2003
Resident Evil: Dead Aim Spring 2003
Resident Evil 4 (with Leon) 2004

That fucking Mr X or Tyrant or whatever the hell he's called that stalks you throughout the game during the second quest.
In one area you're lighting lamps in order to solve a puzzle. You do the deed and suddenly WHAM!!!! Bastard comes right through the wall.No warning,no nothing.I jumped a foot, swore out loud and dropped the controller the first time.

Gotta vote for Silent Hill 2 here. Besides being one of the few games I've actually completed it may be the single most chill inducing piece of entertainment I've experienced. The detail in that game is so amazing that I'd play it if all you did was walk around and look at the town. The first one was also cool but I never finished it. I may have to break it out again. As for games that no one has mentioned, any of you guys play the Twisted Metal series? Basically a car combat game. The latest one was called Twisted Metal: Black. One of the more addictive games I've played and all the characters are basically psychos. There's an insane clown, a kid riding around with his dead father, a lunatic preacher with a body wriggling in chains in his truck bed. It's high octane, super violent and well, Twisted.

Half-Life : I would almost leap out of my chair when one of those little critters would jump out at me. Also, hearing that gurgle/whoop sound that some aliens would make, you'd hear them, but have no idea where it was coming from, also, when aliens would teleport near you, eep.
Resident Evil :Love the entire series. Walking into a room and hearing that shuffle drag sound coming from a zombie, and yet the camera angle being awkward enough for you not see where it is, and having to walk into the room hoping it wasn't just mere steps away from you. Plus I hated those damn dogs jumping through the windows. Nemesis in the 3rd one always made me nervous, I'd just run and hope he wouldnt get me all the while sweating and thinking "Aiiieeee!!"
Alien Vs. Predator 2 : Someone mentioned this one and I suddenly remembered how playing it in the dark with earphones on made me totally paranoid. I had to stop playing one time as I kept on hearing noises outside, just a can rolling around in the wind, but hey, it could have been the Predator out there.

1) Clocktower series - by far the most suspenful games ever made. Being pursued by scissor wielding maniacs as an adopted child in a spooky mansion never gets old. All of the games are very scary, though they are not really action packed. If you search online you can find the snes clocktower which is amazing. I dont know how many people know this but the late Kinji Fukasaku (of Battle Royal fame) directed the cut scenes to clock tower 3 (the new one that is coming out in a few months. He used motion captured actors and was supposed to have brought some things to the story.

2) Silent Hill series - Both parts in this series are really good. The story goes above and beyond a normal videogame and features some truly disturbing imagery(my fav being the inside out person crucified on a fench). good stuff.

3) Eternal Darkness - Not really the scariest game ever, but the most complex horror story ever featured in a video game. The story spans centuries and has many main characters that all contribute to one main plot. It kinda reminds me of Lovecraft's works. A great game
