View Full Version : DTS and Dolby Digital: Which do you prefer?

I just recently purchased a DTS Reciever,
as I have been hearing how much better the sound was. I used to have a Dolby Digital reciever only, and I thought that was fine and dandy.
When I gave a listen to DTS
I thought it was merely ok,
nothing really different.
But after a few more listens,
to movies encoded with DTS,
I am hooked on the sound quality,
as it is superior to DD.
So which do you prefer to listen
to your movies in, or should I say watch?
Don't know why I am asking this,
really, but I am just curious.

i have been thinking on this subject for a while now.Personally i don't think that there is all that much difference between the two,..although, that ,..of course depends on what system you are running,..mines isn't too bad(apart from my dvd player). d.t.s,..i suppose sounds more richer,..more deeper,...slightly better i suppose,..but it's not that much better,..we're talking about very miniscule amounts of difference for it to matter all that much.I used to go out of my way to get a d.t.s disc,..but not anymore,...overall,..d.t.s 9/10.......DD5.1 8/10 ..not enough difference to make me get d.t.s discs specially........ok;)

I only have Dolby Digital and I've always wondered how DTS would fare. Seing how it just fares slightly better, I will leave my system how it is.
DTS, just like anything else is only as good as the person and the equipment that is doing the encoding.
That being said, when it's done correctly (which is about 98% of the time) there is a VAST difference in subtleties regarding sound! Yes, it is VERY MUCH worth getting if you are in the market for a new system... most now come with dts.
Does this mean if ya just bought a system that's 5.1, you feel ripped and now need dts... heck no! Enjoy that 5.1! dts is an enchancer of 5.1.... now if ya DO NOT have 5.1 and just have some stereo speakers hooked to the tv.... I'd say RUN (if ya can afford it) and get thee a 5.1 system! (Keep in mind though that getting dts is only an extra $50 cost when you compare prices... so why not???) ;)
I recently upgraded to a a Home Theater in a box system. Its a Pioneer brand 5 disc carousel changer with built in dolby digital 5.1 surround with dts encoding. 500 watts... which is quite ample. Out the door tax included: $368. I had it hooked up in an hour with the color coded wires. You dont need thousands anymore to have theater sound in your home! When I play the Matrix, you'd think my windows would shatter. :D
