You two have posted about this movie like a hundred times, since I've been here. I have seen the movie and I really think your giving it a lot more attention than it deserves. The clown doll is OK, and this is coming from a big evil clown fan. I can say that if he wasn't there, things would be worse. And the nursery rhyme, well, its mostly just odd, and I've found that most people find it quite annoying.

Ok, two years ago I went to Oklahoma for spring break and stayed at my cousin's house. One day, me, my cousin and his friend went to the video store and rented this movie. I saw the beginning where the girl had slain this goat or limb. Then her dad got all mad and yelled at her. The little girl is being talked to by her clown doll. Then, the father gets the ole ax through the head. And the mother stood in front of this shaky mirror and it shattered all over her. Then the people come to investigate the house and the woman sees a head going around in the washing machine. What happened to the little girl? What's the deal with the clown doll? What else happnes in the movie??

*SPOILERS*
The little girl died and was laid to rest with the clown doll because her father was an undertaker I think and he took that doll from another person who had been deceased and that was why all the trouble in the house happened. Out of the group of young people that go there, I believe only one guy and two girls survive. They end up burning the girl's coffin (its not in the ground its in the family crypt) and that ends all the supernatural goings-on.
*END SPOILERS*
Its overall below average to poor, it features some decent to pretty good gore and some strange/unique sequences. It has a very funny and seemingly pointless black character. I don't recommend the movie, if you couldn't find it for rent then I wouldn't bother buying it, but if you must don't pay much. I saw it for $1.17. Its italian title is something like La Casa 3, which translates to The House, its the 3rd movie in a bunch of unofficial/ripoff Evil dead sequels.

Evildead sequel? Hmmmm....
I thought they were reffering to a "HOUSE" sequel....Oh well....
Couple of questions:
1. I know the nursery rhyme is incomprehensible, but can someone atleast describe it?
2. Any pics?
3. Is the grim reaper dude cheesy?
4. The opening is good right?
5. Is the little girl in white eerie?

The nursery rhyme isn't that incoherent, I can tell you this part which keeps looping:"HENRIETTA ARE YOU THERE ARE YOU THERE ARE YOU THERE HENRIETTA ARE YOU THERE ARE YOU THERE...etc" The opening is ok, some decent gore, its DARK AS HELL though. And a little girl in a white dress standing there is not scary to me. The grim reaper guy is OK looking.

I loved it and thought it was very scary, and i don't get scared easily! Yes, the nursery rhyme rules! however, i live in the SHIT UK and the ONLY video shop that had this film went bust and the bloke fucked off somewhere and took it with him! CAN'T FIND THIS MOVIE ANYWHERE!!!!!!
P.S. - But strangely enough they've got about 600 copies of the sequel, which in england goes under the name of WITCHCRAFT, and as y'all will know, stars DAVID HASSELLHOFF and LINDA BLAIR. It's only £6 on dvd.

It has just been released on dvd by VIPCO VAULTS OF HORROR. I bought it for £11.99 Region 2. It's no way near as scary as I found it to be when I was about 13 but it still kicks ass in a low budget kind of way!!! I didn't understand the nursery ryhme either, but I always assumed it was the clown doll singing it and to me it sounds like he says "Are you there?, Are you there? Are you there? Are you up?!!!! Seriously that's what it sounds like to me. And in the other section of the song (when the lead guy is trying to figure some shit out on the computer) it sounds like he's repeating the word 'burial' and that's also what comes up on the computer screen! But yeah I really like this movie. I've watched it three times in the last two days. The black guy is absolute quality - he cracks me up big time!!! After the opening deaths though there's hardly any gore!! What was the deal with that??!! The dvd cover has UNCUT in big letters as if making a big deal out of it, but I bet it was never cut in the first place!!! The woman getting the knife at the start kicks ass but after that, minimum blood shed!! Poo!!!

The words in the nursery rhyme that the clown is saying is "burial" over and over. The man in the movie played the nursery song to the computer and it picked up the word "burial."
It's been a long time since I have seen this movie, but correct me if I'm wrong.

PSYCHO PATH -
I'm sure there would be a way to do that dude, but I'm intellectually challenged when it comes to using a pc. I'm sure there are plenty of geezers out there who could do it though!!
The song is still VERY creepy. Even though the movie is more laughable than it is scary, the song still makes a great impact. It's definately one of the scariest pieces of music I've ever heard in a horror film. It's a shame it wasn't used in a better film. I imagine EVERYBODY would remember that tune just like people remember the music to HALLOWEEN, PHANTASM, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET etc if it had the right exposure.

Well, that song must be pretty scary if it would be considered effective after years of watching it...I still cant find this movie, but thank god it is coming to Region 1 DVD(Or so I heard). I hope you dont mind if I ask some questions(some repeated from my last questions, just trying to get an opinion from others too.)
1. Is the clowndoll on its own still pretty eerie?
2. Is the little girl half as effective as the twins in THE SHINING?
3. In that one scene where the girl gets sliced in half by the guillotine, how does it happen? Does she fall down on it,or does a blade just come out of nowhere and chop her in two?
4. Can someone describe the rhythm of the nursery rhyme? Like is it carnival-ish,childish,or just odd?
5. How high is the atmosphere level in this movie?

Ah Ghosthouse :D I loved this movie!! The ending threw me off a little bit, and I agree the filming is pretty dark, but I thought the clown doll and little girl were as eerie as hell. They had this quiet, evil-type mode going on. I loved it when the doll started chanting. The acting wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst I've seen, and in this movie it didn't matter much. Anyway, I see why you're obsessed psycho fan, I've noticed the scene in your avatar.

!SPOILERS!
The clown doll is still pretty scary to look at and is mostly effective (with the exception of a few moments where it's fucking funny), and the little girl tries her best, but you can tell she just can't act for shit. There's one scene where a tv switches itself on, and one of the cast looks up to see the girl and the doll on the screen. It could've been a very scary sequence but the little girl stares too hard and just looks silly.
As for the pane of glass slicing the girl in half, it's wank. She trips over a box or something and whilst flat on her face, she looks up and screams as she can see the glass loosely hanging from the ceiling. It falls and slices through her waist line. There's no blood, you can see the styrofoam body if you pause it, and it implies the two halves of the body have been separated by about three feet, which BLATANTLY wouldn't happen ever!
You just have to hear the song for yourself, because it's hard to describe. I think even if the voice was erased the tune would still be strange. It may have been a nursery ryme. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but it does get lost after a few viewings. It has that low budget, grainy look that gives it an extra boost.

Just saw this movie recently. Pretty creepy in a cheesy low-budget Italian kinda way. Sorta reminded me of a Fulci flick actually - similar atmosphere.
That weird music gets stuck in your head, eh? That was probably the creepiest thing about the movie actually.
What was up with the "wacky black man"? And I like that since he is black, he of course steals the couple`s money (in the truck scene).
After the first kill, the "teens" say they are going to leave, just as soon as they`re done "packing up". Packing up WHAT? They`re in a CAMPER!!
What`s up with the lead couple and CHILI? It seems like they talk about chili, or making chili, or eating chili, an awful lot.
The kill scenes sorta reminded me of "Final Destination" (fan blade, glass pane, etc.). Though I suppose "The Omen" did those kinds of kill scenes first.
All in all, it was an alright watch, fairly memorable, total MST3K material.
There was one character that I figured FOR SURE would survive - but no, he/she not only died, but got the NASTIEST death scene in the whole movie!
***SPOILER*** Highlight to read:
I`m talking about the younger girl, who gets split in half with the glass pane.
***SPOILER***
For those who`ve seen the movie, do they show the black guy die? I remember he walks into the house and acts scared, and I remember near the end the lead girl finds his dead body - but do they show him die?

MST3K = 'Mystery Science Theater 3000'. You know, the show where the guy and his two robots watch bad sci-fi/horror/fantasy movies (at the bottom of the screen).
Not saying the movie was terrible, I kinda liked it, but it DID have some pretty cheesy stuff (some of the music, the crazy old caretaker guy, the wacky black sterotype guy, the dumb 32-year-old teens, the lead couple`s constant talk of chili).

If anyone cares I thought I'd share my first Ghosthouse experience with you.
When I was 13 (1987) I was just getting into horror movies. I had always turned away from the clown doll scenes in Poltergeist because that sucker freaked me out. Anyways one night my dad was going to the video store. I asked him to pick me up something cool. What he brought back was Ghosthouse. I said I had not heard of it but would give it a watch that night (I used to stay up late and watch my horror movies at night).
Anyways after the first five minutes I got a pretty good idea this was going to scare the sh*t out of me (which was hard to do). It did scare the hell out me!
The next day I asked my dad if by any chance the box had a scary clown doll on it anywhere.
"Oh yeah! I think there was!", was something like his response.
That movie gave me countless nightmares until one day maybe four years later I spotted it again at another video store. I rented it again to see if it was as scary as I had remembered. It wasn't anywhere near as frightening as that first time but I never forgot that first experience. Recently I bought it from amazon.com and it will always hold a special distinction for me as being one of the only movies to truly scare the hell out of me.

The first five minutes gave me a bizzare feeling, certainly disturbing seeing a woman getting a knife slowly pushed through her neck while spewing blood.

I just got this movie and it was good but gay all at the same time. I could not understand that damn song and they played it too much, so much so it got more annoying than creepy. That one guys chick is also annoying as hell. What was the point of the hitchhiker? Why was he there, I just think he decided to be in the movie just because. I would watch it again but I would never get in on DVD unless it was two bucks.

I couldn`t really understand it either, but it didn`t really bother me.
But I WILL agree that they played it too much.
What was the point of the hitchhiker? Why was he there, I just think he decided to be in the movie just because.
I have no idea, I`ve wondered the same thing myself. And how did he manage to steal money from the girl without her noticing?

That song just sticks in your head, I think that's why it's creepy. Hearing a childrens song bieng played while seeing someones throat bieng slashed with a fanblade is just eerie. I will admit that it was pretty bad at times(The mystery type theme that plays occasionally was horrible, and the grimreaper thing was beyond laughable), but I loved some of the parts(Tina turning into the evil clown, the television set coming on with the little girl and clown on the screen, and the bedroom vortex thing)

If you look in the title, you can see Henrietta and the doll in there. But I have to agree, why did they make a cover like that? The original art was way better(Both of them, the house with red mist(US cover art)and henrietta with her doll floating infront of the house(UK and Japan cover art)
Thanks for the link spacemonkey, I have checked the reviews a long time ago, but I see many more have been posted. This seems to be one of the more popular late-eighties B-Movies.

Yeah the opening was alright. That song was the worst part ( I still like my version better :) ) That whole hitchhiker thing was stupid as hell and I really did not find the clown scary, he looked hella generic, total Poltergeist rip off for sure.
That whole part with the mortician guy was pretty cool but the monster at the end totally sucked ass and he did not last very long either.

The transfer is surprisingly good. It's in fullscreen, but I can tell by looking at pics from the VHS version that Vipco did one helluva job with the image transfer. The topic your talkin' about would be in horror reviews, just search Ghosthouse there and you should find my review for it.
And Parilese, I will also agree that the clown looked alot like the Poltergeist one, but I always found this one eerier looking, and more sinister when it's evil.

Now that I look at the film, maybe I'm giving it a little too much praise. It was pretty poorly made, even if it had a few well executed moments(that mortician death scene and the opening worked out well though...), but the majority of it is a little mediocre. Hate that dumbass rock music that plays when the three hear Tina scream and drive away. I still like the flick, but I would lower my 8/10 rating to a high 6/10.

If anybody wants to buy a rare OOP version of Ghosthouse in it's original box(Infinately better than the DVD case.), Region 1, check this auction on Ebay. I'd bid on it(just too have the original box and it would be cool to see it in a darker, murkier version, it would prob. up the atmosphere.), but I'm Canadian, and the price of 10 bucks would go up to around 13 bucks(Or so), plus shipping.
So, here's the auction to anyone interested. You'll get a kick out of what it say's on the back of the box. "A movie so terrifying, saying "It's only a movie" wont be good enough." Lol.

***Mild Spoilers***
I bought Ghosthouse after reading countless positive reviews mainly on the IMDB database, well after making the decision to part with my hard earned cash and purchase the Vipco DVD, I am in two minds as to whether this film lies somewhere between utter shite and acceptable, you could say I'm torn......
Whilst I will give credit where its due to Umberto Lenzi for turning in some nice set pieces on a budget smaller than a DVD box case. I cannot forgive the casting for employing such horrificly talentless irritating actors. Now fact: Jamie Lee Curtis is defo-for me anyway- the scream queen of the horror genre, she screams it sounds more than plausible that indeed she is genuinely terrified, these bozo's couldn't scream their way out of a paperbag, utterly pathetic performances from ALL quarters.
Hats off though to the clown arm we see left and right of our screens from time to time, this prop turned in arguably the best performance of all. Sorry folks but every one of these so called thespians should be up on a charge for impersonating an actor.
On the plus side, the gore factor was pretty intense and realistic, I won't give to much away but the guillotine scene isn't half bad considering, infact I bet the effects guys coudn't wait for our victim to fall foul of their contraption if only to stop her from screaming, she is VERY annoying to say the least!.
Unfortunately the special effects do fall foul of the budget, terrible dissolves, infact they weren't dissolves at all, ghostly figures appear and disappear with absolutely no finesse, it reminded me a lot of the early Star Trek beam me up scenes, terrible!.
Ghosthouse does have a certain atmosphere about it, a creepiness. With that in mind I suppose this is another redeeming quality which has stopped me from totaly panning this film out of my collection.
Its not bad but its not good either.
5/10 [EDIT] :D
psycho path
01-03-2004, 05:45 PM
Agreed, the acting is HORRIBLE! The editing aint' all that either, but all in all, I still like it.
By dissolves, I suppose you mean when the ghosts dissapear into thin air. I think this effect was done good at one point of the film, when Tina is in the basement crying at her dead brother and the clown doll and little girl fade away. It was done bad at the end though, I'll admit that, with the grim reaper.
Now I need to ask a question...was I the only one who noticed that cheesy rock music that plays sometimes in the movie?!!

I especially hate where they place the rock music at a good scene and just ruin it! Like when Tina finds Jim dead, she screams, and the others listen to her scream through the ham radio. They go to the rescue and that hilarious rock music plays!
What did you think of the nursery rhyme?
jagged halo
01-04-2004, 12:03 PM
The nursery rhyme I found to be very effective, especialy the voice, very eerie, as I said in my review there definitely is a certain atmosphere about it even if the entire cast couldn't act there way into an episode of Sesamee Street.
I often come across films such as Ghosthouse, its a film that really deserves a 2 or 3 star rating if it wasn't for the aforementioned and its gore.

Morgan, what ending are you talking about? The grim reaper thing or the clown doll coming back?
As for me, I liked the hitchhiker. He was useless, but as Morgan said, he looks like he was the only one enjoying his role.
