George Clooney's getting mad again...are we surprised? Someone criticized Solaris, and the following story ensues:

From IMDB.COM
Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney launched an angry tirade against a journalist at the Berlin Film Festival - after he described the star's latest film Solaris as "boring." The sexy actor was left furious after the Turkish journalist remarked on the Steven Soderbergh film at a news conference on Saturday night. Clooney blasted, "I find you fascinating. You crack me up, man. You just wanted to get up and be a rat, you know that? You just wanted to get up and say something rotten. What a jerk! I mean honestly, you know, what a s**t thing to say! You make a lot of films, do you? You make a lot of films yourself? Yeah, I'd like to see you make a film first before you get to talk about it. What a jerk!" Solaris opened in America to mixed reviews and has performed badly at the box office, however the Ocean's Eleven star remains impressed by the work. When the same journalist asked if he was happy with the film, he replied, "Yes I am. And thanks for the question."

I don't blame the man for caring about his picture, but, he has to accept that people...are...different

I would have questioned the critic why he found Solaris boring. Or question how long has he/she been a critic or something that would bite that critic right back in the nose for asking a question like that. But I do agree that everyone's taste in movies is different. And the way George is behaving will somehow creep right into the tabloids...

I agree with Clooney.

I used to work in Television World and met a lot of journalists from all over the world. Let me say this, and I know this is tricky, but what the heck.. The Turkish people that I have met in a professional manner are lazy, very arrogant, bad mannered, and very badly prepared. I can easily see how this has happened, it's not difficult to imagine from my perspective.. For the record; This is only my own experience.

I don't think it's easy talking or communicating to reporters, they can f*** you over real bad. I kinda applaude Clooney for at least giving that reporter an honest piece of his mind.

There is a huge difference between a reporter and a critic. If a critic, in a panel discussion, offered that opinion, then I think George would be largely in the wrong.

If the guy was, (as it seems from reading this), a beat reporter who inserted that aside into a question, I'd have had him physically removed. That's unprofessional as hell and deserves a serious verbal rebuke.

Solaris is an excellent film and is not so much boring as it is extremely thoughtful. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, this reporter was trying to cause shit and make a scene. It's not his place to stand up and criticize one of Clooney's films, it's not his job and therefore, not his right. I agree with George on this one...

Clooney's remark actually cracked me up a bit, harsh words in sort of a humorous way.

Didn't a lot of Schmoes and critics complain that Solaris was boring? If so, I think Clooney may have acted a bit too far, unless it was a reporter

I've got no problem with what George said. The critic wanted a reaction, and got one.

I agree with Buck, I'd really like to know in what context the journo's criticism was given before passing judgment. That said, however, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and Mr. Clooney could have been more diplomatic in his response, however angry he was at the time.

Personally, I don't think "Solaris" should have been re-made. I'm a huge fan of the Russian original, and there's no way they could have done a faithful re-make that would appeal to Western audiences.

Agreed. I mean what's wrong with him defending his movie?

The journalist criticized the movie, Clooney defended it. And apparently, Georgie did his part of the job better. :)

The only issue I have with Clooney acting this way, is he could've been a bit more diplomatic with his phrasing. The way he said it made him come off a bit short-fused.

heh heh. Normally I slam the Hollywood jet-set for their piss-poor attitudes, but in this case I have to say, "Good for him!"

Think about it. Can you imagine how many times an actor is forced to bite their tongue while critics, reporters, tabloids and internet geeks constantly talking shit about you? They constantly have to deal with a sychophantic agent crying on their shoulder about their 'public image'. Rare is the occassion they can truly express themselves and they are typically forced to take everything with a big flashy smile.

But this time, we have a guy who says "Fuck that" and bites back. I don't feel sorry for the reporter at all. The way I see it, its very simple. Don't ask a question if you don't REALLY want to hear the answer.

I slammed George Clooney during the Charlton Heston thing because it was completely unprovoked, but in this particular instance I have to say, "Well done."

I dunno, when you pour your heart and soul and time into a movie and then some dirt-bag reporter comes along and mouths off like that, I can see how he'd be annoyed. I wonder if he'd have thrown a punch if it weren't for the fact he'd be sued :P

I don't believe that the intention was to remake Tarkovsky's movie. Neither movie as far as i'm aware are very faithful to the original book and neither are very like the other. They both approach the original material from different angles. Whichever way you look at it though Soderburgh's movie isn't a remake of the original movie. It's a different interpretation of the book. Nothing wrong with that.

As for Clooney's reaction to the critic/journalist. Heh. I have very little respect for most journalists at the best of time. The majority of them are sensationalist fuckwads who will stop at nothing for a story. This isn't a blanket statement. Some are in it for the right reasons. But the majority of newspapers and gossip rags have a tabloid mentality that ensures that the stories they print exist for no other reason than to make vast quantities of cash whatever the means. There's very little integrity in journalism these days. I applaud Clooney for shouting this prick down.
