NEW YORK (Variety) - The pint-sized heroes of the "Spy Kids" movies will have to face down the Italian Stallion in the upcoming third installment of the hit franchise.

Sylvester Stallone has signed up to play the chief villain, called the Toymaker, in "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over." The action hero's character is a longtime nemesis of the sleuthing Cortez family who traps the young heroine Carmen (Alexa Vega) in a warped virtual-reality game.

Vega, Antonio Banderas and Daryl Sabara will be returning to the third picture, as will helmer Robert Rodriguez.

Co-star Carla Gugino, who played Banderas' wife, Ingrid Cortez, in the first two pictures, is said to be in advanced negotiations to return for "3-D."

"I've always been a big fan of Sylvester Stallone," Rodriguez said. "His larger-than-life persona will be a great addition to the 'Spy Kids 3-D' universe."

Now lensing, "Spy Kids 3-D" is expected to hit theaters by July. The first two "Spy Kids" films are among the best-ever financial performers for Dimenision Films, posting a total domestic theatrical gross of more than $198 million.

Well, another thing to help Stallone's career go further down the drain...

Seriously though, should they even bother with a Spy Kids 3? It won't do well, as Part II wasn't nearly as successful as Part I. They're not waiting long enough between films. I suppose they're trying to use the kids before they grow too old.

At least this'll temporarily save Sly from his DTV fate he's been in lately

It'll be like when Arnold went to the Batman series. I guess he'd be o.k. But why are they just announcing this, when they've already began principal photography? odd to me. Sounds like a SW flick. Write a little bit of the script. Then Start filming.

I think it sounds like a pretty good idea. I've always liked Stallone, even though his last couple movies have sucked. Except for Eye See You. I don't think he's ever played a bad guy before. Should be interesting.

I really don't feel that they need a Spy Kids III. The second one was Tuesday afternoon killing time, and should have ened at that.

I believe that Robert Rodriguez originally intended for Spy Kids to be a trilogy and so Buena Vista signed him for all three movies. Because of this, they began production for each on as soon as the previous one was finished, as was the case for The Lord of the Rings. Now whether Buena Vista will go on after the trilogy is almost a must, considering their love of 'milking dead cows,' but Robert Rodriguez intended only to do a trilogy and is stopping after the third. But facts aside, I agree that the movies are a disgrace to the fledging spy genre.
