Just got The Gate on DVD! Ok, the DVD is a crappy one, with no extras, no nothing! But hey at least I got this hella cool movie in my collection!
It was a trip seeing Stephen Dorff as the paranoid little kid whos house serves as the passage way for hell on earth! If you ask me he was acting better then some of his current films...fear dot com anyone?
The special fx? Ingenious and amazing....specially those little demon dudes that pop out of the ground. And the stop animation sequences are something truly awesome.
The film does fall into goofy and silly territory at times, but hey, who cares! Theres demons in every corner and the gates of hell are about to be opened in the dudes own backyard!
An entertaining flick no doubt, anyone else got a chance to pick this up? It was only going for a measly 7 dollars and 99 cents! I couldnt believe it when I saw it there on the rack just waiting for me to buy it!
Anyone remember this flick?

Firstly, the gate has a badass cover.
secondly, it's only an okay movie. The demons look cool, and the 2nd half is fun to watch but the first half is meh.
thirdly, wait there is no third point heh

Hey Claw are you the kinda kid who reads the last chapter of a book to find out what happens to the main character?
The first half is just the build up. It gives us some foreshadowing of things to come, like for example the dream sequence Glen has in the first five minutes with that lightning falling on that tree...
And then that "levitating" scene...

I saw "The Gate II" years ago, when it was new on video.
I remember liking it, to be honest with you. I didn`t think it was bad. Of course, my opinion might be different if I saw it again now....
Here`s some info about the sequel (I suppose there`s some minor SPOILERS here, but nothing major)
The nerdy kid (Terry?) from the original is the only returning cast member. He`s older (late teens) and looks a little different. I forget how, but he somehow captures one of the little white demons from the original (FYI, there is only ONE of them in this movie). The demon can grant wishes (since when?), and some bully kids who don`t like Terry steal the demon, and use it to grant wishes. But let`s just say the kids` wishes turn to shit....
At the end, two of the bullies become big demons (not like the little ones), and the effects are pretty good (stop-motion just like the other creatures, from what I can remember).
However, the sequel has a REALLY corny ending, scroll down if you want it spoiled (may as well, it sucks anyway).
Everybody that died in the movie magically comes back to life (even the bad guys). I don`t think there`s even any explanation for why this happens.

i have the 2nd one.
its bad.
the only cool thing is they bring back a little demon, they get anything they wish for, but after a while it turns to shit. literally.

Same here man, its sort of like a nostalgia trip to me.
It falls into the category of what I like to call "kid horror". Sort of like the same category that Monster Squad falls into. They are like the perfect films to get started into horror films, when you are in the 7- 12 year old range.
Still that doesnt stop em from being damn good. I love both of these flicks.

Hey, I read that the director of The Gate is gonna be directing the new Amytiville flick, called Amytiville: 25 years later. I wonder how that will turn out. If you ask me Ive only seen two sequels of Amytiville that I liked. Those are Amytiville The Possesion, wich I might add blew me the hell away, and Amytiville 1992: its about time, I hope that this new installment directed by Tibor Takacs is a worthy sequel to the true classic that is the original mother of all haunted house flicks: The Amytiville Horror

the Gate 2 is not ver entertaining and only succeeds in giving off some interesting bits of stop motion monster and the last fourth is pretty cool but the rest of the movie is boring and more than that it is uninteresting because the characters all can't act for shit.

I liked those little buggers too, Im still amazed at how cool that effect looks. I also like the steal worker thats trapped in the walls, his sort of like a zombie type of character, and then he falls on the floor and divides into hundreads of those little demons creatures...cool scenes done in a pre-morphing era. :D

I love that scene where the corpse falls down and shatters into tons of little demons! I remember that was one of the scenes they used to show on the TV commercials.

Hey so I finally got to see The Gate II: Tha return of the nightmare.... I was allready expecting a bad movie, but when I saw Tibor Takacs name as the director of the flick, my hopes were raised.
All for nothing really cause Im sad to say it was not that good. Not that it was horrible, but it just didnt measure up to the coolness of the first.
Now heres my question. How can a director make such a cool movie like the Gate, then make a lesser sequel? I dont get it. They should be able to make something better, yet this was not the case with the Gate II.
Still it had some good things about it. mainly I guess the story was a little more solid and not as simple as the first flick. I guess what really held me thru to the end was the story wich was rather interesting. One of the characters from the first flick, manages to conjure up one of the little demons we saw on the first film, he captures it and discovers it can grant wishes, that later on turn to shit (litterally!).
I guess what dissapointed me the most were some of the fx, for example the stop animation. In the first flick, that was one of the coolest things about it, how that one last demon looked so cool...and menacing. Yet the crappy monster design we see in part II is so bad, we dont even get any close ups of the demons face, as if they knew it was gonna look like shit, so all we get are this shots of the demon from far away, wich of course alienates us the audience from the movie, wich is not a good idea.
Um, yeah like most of the people here mentioned before, the one good thing about this movie, was the little minion creature, wich was still interesting to look at.
Well I was not totally dissapointed, cause I have seen worse films, but I wasnt at all immpressed.
