Several things happened to Signs. It was a big, crowdpleasing, blockbuster movie, which doesn't work unless you're Titanic or LOTR. Also, it was a summer movie, and save for Gladiator, the Academy doesn't really take a shining to summer movies, or movies released before September, period. This year's Best Picture nominees were all released at the tail-end of December (the earliest released was LOTR:TTT on December 18th).
Tom Hanks was great in Road to Perdition, I agree. And I think he definitely should have been nominated. But some people were turned off by his playing a villain, it was released early, and I guess it wasn't showy like Nicholson and Day-Lewis. The same thing can be said for Robin Williams.
The Academy can't nominate everything, and they can't make everyone happy, unfortunately. I wasn't happy with all the picks, but it's something we have to live with, I guess.

Signs should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay & Best Director.
Kissing Jessica Stein should have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay
Robin Williams should have been nominated for One Hour Photo or Insomnia
Leonardo DiCaprio should have been nominated for Catch Me If You Can
Minority Report should have been nominated for Best Visual Effects.
Peter Jackson should have been nominated for
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers

Movies before September rarely have a chance. Diane Lane was lucky to be nom'd. Personally, I don't think Signs deserves the nom, since the 3rd act went downhill during the "morning after" scenes. In addition, I don't think Hanks deserved a nom for Road to Perdition, since it was a flat, boring performance. He really doesn't even play a villain

EXACTLY!!! Kissing Jessica Stein at least deserved a Best Original Screenplay nomination. Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen did a wonderful job writing the witty script, and I think it's really something how they wrote an excellent script and both gave two excellent performances. Nia Vardalos wrote and starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and that got a nomination, so why not Kissing Jessica Stein!? I bet any money if My Big Fat Greek Wedding wouldn't have made the money it did and Kissing Jessica Stein would have made that much, the tables would be turned and Kissing Jessica Stein would have gotten nominated, not My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I just think it really sucks that Kissing Jessica Stein got snubbed. Maybe if it would have opened this fall or winter it would have gotten a nomination!? Anyway, I think the academy should spread out the nominations a little bit, instead of giving one movie 14 nominations or so. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it, but damn them to hell for snubbing Kissing Jessica Stein, which at the very least should have gotten a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, I mean, even the reviews were better than the reviews for My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Anyway, I also think The Good Girl should have received at least one nomination. But I am very happy to see Diane Lane score a nomination for her brilliant performance in Unfaithful, she definitely gave the best performance of the year. Unfortunately, I doubt she'll win, but it's great that she was nominated, and I must admit, it's also a little surprising she managed to get a nom. As for Signs, I'm not surprised it didn't get any nominations, it certainly doesn't deserve any, if anything, The Ring should have gotten some, which had much better directing and cinematography than Signs. It was also a much better film. Shyamalan is majorly overrated. Anyway, I'm also surprised Far From Heaven didn't score a Best Picture nomination, I remember thinking it was a shoe in before. And it's too bad Hugh Grant didn't get a nomination for Best Actor. His performance in About A Boy was surprisingly excellent. I'm usually not a big fan of his, but he managed to win me over a great deal with this one. His performance in About A Boy was the best male performance of the year, in my opinion anyway.

Wow, how absolutely shocking would it have been if Signs got a Best Picture nomination out of nowhere. :)

I'm with you here. I wish that Dreamworks really put some effort into campaigning it, because Far From Heaven sure as hell deserved it.

Yeah, if SIGNS would have gotten a Best Picture nomination I think I would have literally had a heart attack...
And although I haven't seen Far From Heaven yet, I still think it looks really good. And with all of the buzz, I'm honestly shocked as hell it didn't get nominated. And I never expected to see The Pianist get a Best Picture nomination, I think Far From Heaven should have taken its place, but that's just me. I remember when Far From Heaven was first released, I could totally see it winning Best Picture, I couldn't picture any other movie winning. But I guess that obviously won't happen now.

I was very surprised initially, but then I actually saw the film and it is more deserving than most of the nominees. Everything about it screams OSCAR! If you haven't seen it and don't understand why it got a nom...well go watch it and you'll understand/

Well, they only have five entries for each major category. You have to exclude at least a few worthy films. It's the way of things. Plus, I think part of it is the backlash from the success of the director's Sixth Sense. To be honest I don't think either one is worthy. Both are good dramatic thrillers, but hardly great. (and frankly, a bit pretentious).

I think Signs is a decent movie. But I don't think there's any one particular aspect to it that makes it superior than any other film.

There's so many things wrong with that statement it makes my head spin! SIGNS is much better than THE RING, better acting, directing, the story is better too. It has a point, though I liked THE RING, there is no point or lesson to it. The directing in THE RING is a bit too slick and flashy for my liking. Naomi Watts delivered a great performance in THE RING, but so did everyone else in SIGNS. Oh well, at least SIGNS made more money. ;) (I admit it, that was a low blow.)

I actually think Signs AND The Ring are both highly over-rated movies. I would have been perplexed if either of them got a best picture nomination.

If that was the point, then honestly I think it failed.
I enjoyed the first 2/3 of it in a purely guilty pleasure way, and then the movie got too filled with itself and dove headfirst into stupidity. This movie frustrates me because while I thought it was decent (6.5-7/10) I thought it could have been worlds better.

i really enjoyed it. i felt the tension and sort of got sucked really into what was happening. i found it intelligent and interesting. even the ending worked, i feel like we did need to see a little something... i dont know, it did it for me. the acting was great, the characters were great, i found it tense.
eh, i guess its all subjective at the end of the day anyway. for sure, it was one of the better films i saw last year.

You are not alone, a lot of people really loved this movie. I liked it but I just wasn't blown away by it. The parts with Joaquin Phoenix were pretty amusing, and I liked some of the tension buildup in the earlier parts of the film.

I'm with flow about Signs. I liked it more than her, but it was creepy, interesting, and tense for 85% of the movie. But after the night scene, it went downhill. It went downhill precisely after the reflection on the TV. Part of my annoyance with it is because of the Swing Away Merril line (which coincidently, got a Golden Schmoe nomination)

oh i didnt actually personally nominate it, but it was a pretty cool line... i dont know, its like the whole film just drew me totally into it and kept me totally engaged. ok, i loved it, it wasnt perfect, but to keep me that interested is always good. and i am really notoriously hard to please :)
God, I hate that stupid "Swing Away" line, it's so cheesy and hilariously bad.

The biggest overlook of this year for the Oscars was Road to Perdition sure it got 6 noms but it should have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay:David Self,Best Actor:Tom Hanks, Best Director:Sam Mendes, and of course Best Picture this was indeed one of the Best Pictures of the yr but like so many other great movies they are overlooked
Example:only 2 Noms for Memento that was a rip should have had more

Oops, no point, I meant it had a lesson where as THE RING had...... well nothing. THE RING was just a straight on horror movie, which didn't even scare me that much the first time I saw it....

signs would have been a surprise pick but i think it was one that would have been justified,it had a shot because of large audience it attracted when it first came out, not to mention the fact that its a great movie

I can't believe how badly The Two Towers was ripped off. How does it not get nominated for cinematography?? or makeup? or costumes? or musical score? And PJ definetely deserves at least a nom for his direction -- the movie is just too epic and huge for him to be snubbed like that. Im not even expecting a best picture win, but come on..... nominating The Time Machine for makeup over TTT is just rediculous.
As for Signs, I enjoyed the movie (hated the ending tho, and I agree w/ the person who thinks the 'Swing Away' line is stupid) but its nowhere near deserving of an Oscar. Neither is The Ring for that matter, tho I gotta say in terms of sheer scariness, The Ring is miles ahead of Signs. Loved it :)
Geez, I don't believe some of you people, SIGNS----an Oscar!? Oh my god, if that would have gotten nominations then the academy would really be a joke. I could see maybe a Razzie nom, but an Oscar nom!? Not in this lifetime... There's tons more deserving films than SIGNS that got snubbed. If they were to nominate SIGNS, they may as well just nominate xXx and Stealing Harvard as well.
Anyway, after seeing MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (7/10 or B), I can safely say the KISSING JESSICA STEIN (9/10 or A-) was a hell of a lot more deserving of a "Best Original Screenplay" nomination. Sure, I enjoyed MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, but KISSING JESSICA STEIN was MUCH MUCH better written and is MUCH MUCH more deserving. The academy has really pissed me off with this, I just can't believe they'd snub such an excellent and well written flick. Them damn bastards .

Well...This great movies like Signs and Kissing Jessica Stein, never get nominations for the Oscars.Itīs a cruel world for the movie fans.
But for a long story short, thatīs why we have the Golden Schmoes Awards here at JoBlos.
