I just rented this again after about 3 or 4 years and I must say for not being that big of a Kubrick fan, this movie is just awesome. Scary as hell! I don't remember this movie being this intense. The music alone is enough to get your heartbeating.
Now I know that Im not the only one that feels this way about this movie.
(8/10).

Your so right..I'm a huge Kubrick fan, and this is one of those films I have to watch every couple months. I love the long tracking shots and POV shots.
I always felt like Kubrick made the audience feel like we were Voyeurs watching a family go through hell.

The hotel is haunted right? And it could communicate to Jack, which the boy picked up on right?
There's some kind of time warp too isn't there? Where Jack some how went back to 1921?
Im a little confused on some parts.

Yeah...Jack just let it take him over.
Danny and Halloran have the psychic ability to communicate called "The Shining." I think the 1921 photo is all the victims the Hotel has taken. It is somewhat confusing.

its a great film...
but in typical fashion i gotta say the book is a lot scarier...
actually, the shining is one of few stephen king movie adaptations i have liked.
for example, IT totally sucked...

Yep I agree. IT was really lame, too long and slow. Although I liked Tim Curry as Pennywise.

It's not a time-warp, its just a metaphor. It's meant to symbolize that Jack Torrance has been 100% corrupted by the Overlook. I think its also meant to imply that he was always destined to become the instrument of the Hotel's anger. (But I could be wrong. Who can say when it comes to Kubrick)

You didn't like The Stand? That's the only one I liked. Everything else is unworthy.

I mean the Re-Makes Stephen King has done. Kings TV Re-Makes are horrible and unwatchable to me.
Not Rob Reiner's Misery
Not Brian De Palma's Carrie
Not Stanley Kubricks The Shining
Not Frank Darabont's Shawshank
Not John Carpenter's Christine
Not David Cronenberg's Dead Zone
These are Excellent films. Sorry for the confusion.

That's the DVD you can get in the more expensive Kubrick Box Set, right?

Terrible, terrible movie, but then all of Kubrick's movies are terrible. I hated every minute of this boring movie. The TV miniseries starring Steven Weber was a lot better, in my opinion.

Yeah, I think it's a very cool movie. I wish Kubrick would've gotten someone more talented than the nascent Shelly Duvall to play his wife, but Jack's over the top performance is very suited to the movie. It's getting a bit dated now, but it can still be a blast to watch.

I thought Shelly DuVall was excellent. Very convincing as Wendy and I really felt sorry for her.
As for the prettied-up 1997 Re-Make, Rebecca DeMornay was flat, boring, and unconvincing. It looked like she was confused thru-out the movie.
DuVall has the better acting skills, IMO.
The Shining: 7/10
I think this is a good, creepy movie that may be a little bit too long. This film would not work at all without Jack.

All periods of time exist simultaneously at the Overlook. That's why Grady tells Jack in the bathroom that he (Jack Torrence) is the caretaker, and has always been the caretaker.
While on one level he's out there in the maze w/ Danny, on another he's back in the past w/ the revelers on New Year's Eve. King spells it out in the novel. Stan never spelled anything out to anybody.

Does anybody know about the theory that is really about the mistreatment of American Indians or something like that? If somebody has a site or something about it that would be cool, I don't remember that much about the whole theory.

The hotel is built on an old Indian burial ground.
Once a fresh and unnerving idea, it's since been done to death.

There are several Native American references in the Shining. Stuart Ullman mentions something in the beginning, and if you look at the walls of the main lobby, you'll find several pieces of Native American artwork. Also, in the walk-in freezer that Jack gets locked in--you'll see several products on the shelves with an Indian head logo on them. There IS a site somewhere that goes in to better detail. If I happen to find it I'll post the link.
Personally, I think the Native American angle should have been left out of the film.

The Shining is just a fantastic, clever horror movie that EVERYONE should see. Jack Nicholson is such a god.

The Shining is one of my very favorites in supernatural horror, this film is a classic, so chilling and atmospheric.
I love everything about it. The performances were awesome. Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers. One of the few films from my childhood that has managed to utterly scare me.
The hotel is fantastic, (every scene is bone-chilling and so atmospheric. (and who can forget those long spooky hallways and that terrifying maze!) definitely a great horror film.
Jack Nicholson at his best! 10/10
(The tv miniseries isn't even in the same ballpark!)

A classic Kubrick movie. It makes me wonder why Stephen King hated the 1980 version. I have always wondered the 411 on Shelly Duvall? I havent seen her in any movies and whatever happen to the boy that played Danny. What is he up to?

OK, non-saracastic this time: I AM suffering!
on the other hand I'm kind of a masochist concerning weird and annoying avatars... I even liked The Claw's former Alf avatar. That's why: keep it! :)

Kubrick was ahead of his time and realised that men in fursuits are fucking creepy.

Well, the whole blowjob thing can't really be explained for the movie (although I remember it being a wolf costume or something, I could be wrong), in the book someone in that costume is tormenting Danny when he tries to leave his room. Apparently he was a guy who had sex with some other guy at the hotel a long time ago and was hissing obsenities at Danny, sick things like "I'll eat you all up, starting your plump little dick". *shivers* The movie's version of this is left for interpretation, I guess.
