IMDB reports:
Oscar-nominee Nicole Kidman fears gossip about her and Jude Law may sabotage her chances of picking up an Academy Award next month. The Antipodean star is nominated in the Best Actress category for her portrayal of author Virginia Woolf in Stephen Daldry directed movie The Hours. However, British tabloid The Sun reports those close to the star fear her entanglement in the divorce of Sadie Frost and Road To Perdition star Jude could prejudice her opportunity to pick up her first Oscar. A source close to Nicole says, "There's always so much emotion and politics involved in voting for Oscar winners. Nicole has been made to look like a man-eater and a home wrecker and we are not sure how well that will go down with the mostly older voters in the Academy, even though she strongly denies the allegations. She will need to lobby hard in the coming weeks."
I think it would be terrible if she lost it due to rumors...but, now that you mention it, if she doesn't win and Moore does, people could unfairly blame this! Oh the uncertainty is maddening.

What a load of shite. Nothing of this nature should have any bearing on any decisions made by the Academy. The performance is the only thing that should be taken into consideration.

I firmly believe that Russell Crowe would have won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind if his public persona wasn't such an arrogant prick. He didn't get the award because of his temperament.
In other words, look out Nicole. It is really unfair that people's personalities and rumors interfere with them winning awards, but that is the way of the game. In my opinion, Nicole was phenomenal in that movie and I would love to see her win.

The Oscars now I would compare to like the Publishers Clearing House... And I don't think rumors will play a factor on who they go with. Just don't be kissing their asses 24/7 cause they will automatically snub you. Also, the academy rarely give out awards to previous winners.

As little as I think of her as an actress and a person, I would hate to see this this happen...again.
Crowe's persona and a whispering campaign about it parallel an earlier, similar 11th hour campaign to deny Denzel his rightful Oscar for The Hurricaine.
It's just the way of the AMPAS.

I doubt that she'll lose the Oscar over the gossip. But then again, I predicted Rollerball would make $60M

I don't think she'll lose the award because of the gossip either, but heck, the Academy's all about politics right now and we know it, so I wouldn't rule it out either.

Agreed. It's totally unfair, but it's true. Remember it wasn't that long ago that Hugh Grant was up for a couple of statues, but his daliance with a low-class hooker in a Hollywood alley cost him that.
What makes it even sadder is, I don't think Nicole's guilty of the "other woman" crimes she's being accused of. And this might cost her an Oscar. I've always known the Academy Awards were a popularity contest in the film industry...I just never realised til now that included raking the muck of the gossip trade. How unfair.

Really? I never knew he did such a thing

The same thing happened during the whole Meg Ryan-Russell Crowe affair. I remember reading somewhere that his agent or publicist was quoted to say, after their breakup that "Now I knew he had a chance at the Oscar." Or something to that effect.
Whether that was the deciding vote that moved Oscar more towards his favor, we'll never know...... but then again, I believe he lost the Oscar for a Beautiful Mind due to his prior behavior before all the ballots were handed in.
