ok, some of you guys probably know me as this gigantic Tom Cruise hater. Yes, I LOATHE the guy but some of you schmoes have really convinced me that he is not a bad actor. Looking back, I'd have to say he did a good job in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Rain Man. I guess I just hate him as a person TOO much that I have completely disregarded the fact that he can be a good actor once in a while. I apologize for giving the little tyke so much flack, I guess I was being too harsh. ;)

But that doesn't mean that I like the guy either, he still annoys the hell out of me and probably always will, but he makes good movies so I guess I'll just have to TRY to stand his annoying voice and face. But for now, I loathe him as much as BadCoverVersion loathes him. ;)

as a person, he gets on my nipples.

as an actor, hes pretty good. hes been in a fair few films i have enjoyed, and he kept me believing in him a little, so i guess as an actor, he passes.

Me, I don't even like him as an actor. All of his roles seem so self indulgent as though he's the greatest gift to film. He has an air of arrogance around him and it really gets to me. The only performance of his I really liked was Born On The Fourth of July and maybe Eyes Wide Shut. He is so much in love with himself that it makes me sick.

I think Tom Cruise is a decent actor. He has turned in some fine performances in Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July, Rainman, and Jerry Maguire. He has grated my nerves in Eyes Wide Shut and Vanilla Sky (but then again I despise both of those movies in general, it isn't specifically because of him.)

What I don't like is how Tom Cruise is always acting, even in interviews. I never see him and feel like I am watching a real person giving genuine insight into himself. In fact, I doubt any of us have ever seen the real Tom in even a glimpse.

I'll never understand how people can hate a celecbrity, unless they're Jane Fonda, but still... it just seems pointless...

But staying on topic, I do like Cruise, as both an actor and person. He's given great performances in Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July, both of which should've gotten him an Oscar.

His work in Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview with A Vampire and Minority Report was very solid and proved he can take on different roles, at different levels with losing his appeal or charm.

As a person, I don't know the man, but it appears to me he is a very funny, charming, nice guy who respects and show a great amount of gratitude towards his fans...

Most of the time, I can totally put aside my feelings about an actor personally, if they are good. I adore Jane Fonda. She's one of my favorite actresses of all time. And Russell Crowe is phenomenal (even if he is a prick). Tom Cruise is a sensational actor, I think, and I think he's cute as a button. Of course, he's not quite as sexy to me, now that I've seen him in real life. He came up to my chin maybe? Ha. No, actually he was close to my same height but he's a very unimposing individual in person. More power to him if he can bring himself to be cocky!:D

I do like him. He's not a great actor, but he does have a strong screen presence. In any case, at least unlike John Travolta, he has made an effort to choose worthy projects--Eyes Wide Shut, Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia, Rain Man, and so fourth.

However, I am sick of hearing about him in the tabloids all the time. However, when this clears up, everyone will agree that he is one of the great movie stars.

I'll never understand why people hate on Tom Cruise so much. Me, I'm fairly neutral towards him, he's done some good work and some not so good work. As a person, I don't know him. But any time I've seen him in an interview he seems like a nice enough guy. Don't get where all the hate comes from.

I don't get the hate either. I think he's a great actor, one of my favorites. And he also seems like a very nice person in real life.

All the bashing by people on the boards gets so fuckin tiring after a while. Everytime theres a discussion on Vanilla Sky or Magnolia or any other movies he's been in, instead of focusing on his excellent performances, people will make fun of his looks, his height, his teeth, etc. And its not like mocking Tom Cruise is something unique. I've seen it a million times before on a million websites and a million magazine articles, and guess what? IT'S OLD.

Now, I just close the page in disgust :o

I loved Magnolia, but I didnt think there was anything special about Tom Cruise's performence. Just because he played an obnoxious ass everyone seems to think it was some great oscar worthy performence. If anything I think the role would have been more effective had it been given to someone else.

I think Cruise is one of the best actors working right now, people take him for granted because he is "Tom Cruise", but the man can flat out act. I don't think he comes off as an ass to me in "real life", but I honesty don't care if he is, I think he is a great actor, and he has lot's of great movies and that is all that really matters to me.:)

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

And I think the whole "acting even in interviews" thing has a point. You never really feel like he's just talking. Except when he's supposed to be acting.

But I think that's common with alot of the wildly popular Scientologists. I get that feeling from most of them. (Sorry MovieGuy)

I admire the guys' talent. It's really not my concern if he keeps the "real him" to himself in interviews. Also, aside from the gay crap, I have NEVER... not ONCE in all my years of reading gossip mags, or sites, have I come upon anyone saying the guy was rude to them, blew them off for an autograph, or was just witnessed having a "bad day"..... he's made GREAT movie choices, kept clear of drug abuse, and I say good for him.

I read this over at E! Online :

"The 40-year-old actor is currently holed up in The Lord of the Rings land filming The Last Samurai, a 19th-century epic depicting the destruction of Japan's sword-wielding warrior class. A local radio station, hoping to cash in on the city's high-profile visitors, offered a payoff of $2,745 to any listener who could get Cruise to call in live on the air.

On Tuesday, Cruise took a break from the martial-arts action and called the station to "do a little negotiating" over the prize money. It seems he wanted the radio station to bump up the pot to $3,600 and promised to match the amount if the funds could be funneled to the local Urenui Junior School.

"They've been trying to raise money for a shelter to go outside," Cruise said, adding that he had been keeping his "ear to the ground" about local events and wanted to give back to the community that has been his home for the last four months of shooting.

Cruise, of course, is no stranger to off-screen heroism. Over the years he has thwarted would-be muggers, rescued a hit-and-run victim, saved the crew of a sinking boat and pulled two boys to safety from a crush of fans."

Damn, he should really stop putting on an "act". Why can't we see the real Tom Cruise, who likes to steal money from schools, mug people, drive people over with his car and drown little boys at sea? I mean, goddamit.. he's not fooling anyone by being this nice. Be genuine for once in your life, Tom

I am not sure if this is in response to what I said about him in interviews, but let me clarify. I think the guy is a decent actor and I have been impressed with his acts of heroism in the past few years. I really do not think he is a bad guy at all. I just said that I would like to see him in an interview one time not seeming like he is "in character." Nothing more, nothing less.

The only thing I can really hold against Tommy is having crappy taste in women (I'm sorry, but Penelope Cruz over Nicole Kidman?) and picking the occasional awful movie role. Otherwise I am sure the guy is just swell.

My biggest issue with Tom Cruise is that he always seems to play the exact same character over and over and over again. It's not because I think he can't act, I KNOW he can as is evidenced by Born on the 4th of July, Magnolia, Interview and a few others. I would just like to see the guy play some break-out characters more often. I'd like to see him play more characters that don't fit into the 'Tom Cruise' mold.

I've never cared for his off-screen presence. He always comes off as fake and extremely cocky. But there's not doubting the man's integrity. He has done some truly great things and has given back to the community as much as he receives. And for that I respect him as a person.

Id choose Penelope over Kidman anyday.

From the stories posted here about his giving money to schools and saving people, he sounds like a nice guy, but he still is only a second-rate actor.

Although I like Nicole Kidman as an actress, physically I don't see anything great about her (she has a cold look to her IMO) Has anyone else noticed this? Also in interviews she just looks very aloof and like she's holding something back..........Penelope Cruz looks more down to earth.

He's ok by me.

I do agree, and I don't think Nicole Kidman is the world's hottest woman like some people say. But she does have a classic kind of beauty about her and a distinct look, whereas Penelope just looks really weird and off in my opinion.

Most certainly. I think Nicole Kidman is absolutely lovely. Cruz looks like she's trying to make her face as small as possible by squinching in all of her features.

I don't think Penelope Cruz is beautiful by any means. I was just saying that I'd choose her over Kidman.

Like I've said before, beauty is subjective and taste in women can't be judged on a scale. There's no such thing as having "crappy taste in women" like you say. What one person may find beautiful, another may find downright revolting.

Hannibal21

Tom would've been better off with Nicole, Nicole is a gorgeous, talented woman.

Penelope Cruz on the other hand (   ), I have no idea what people see in her. She's ugly as hell (she looks like a demonic rat with the mouth of a bird and the body of a weasel) and she's one of the worst actresses there is, not to mention her voice...........ugh! Nothing against Ms. Cruz, she's probably a nice person but as an actress, I can't stand her.

Oh, come on. Obviously if I am saying that, I am saying it in a vague way implying that is what I personally think. The same way someone says "That movie sucks" when that is also subjective. But here, if it makes you happy...

"In my humble opinion, I find Nicole Kidman to be far better looking than Penelope Cruz."

That's not what I meant at all. I know it can get redundant to put "In my opinion" every time you post, and I don't do that either. What I was trying to say was, a person can't have crappy taste in anything.. music, movies, women, anything. But since you didn't mean it in that way, I get your point.

People have different tastes in life. Just because someone doesn't think Kidman is attractive doesn't mean they don't have good taste. To each his own, remember that.

Agreed. And although I think Nicole is one of the five or six sexiest actresses in the world today, I can clearly understand why some people don't find her attractive at all -- pale skin, less shapes than other actresses, and she's got a vibe you either like or don't. I do, and I feel privileged for that. :)

This "debate" has obviously veered off-track a wee bit...but anyway...

I personally can't stand Tommy, but that's MY opinion.

I've never rated him...and I will merrily continue ripping the piss out of his looks, height and dubious taste in totty (Cruise-bashing is one of my favourite pastimes, what can I say!?).

I enjoyed "Minority Report" and "Jerry Maguire", and I will openly admit to that...but IMO, the bloke is a distinctly average actor. A shit-eating grin and a cheeky-boy persona does NOT convince me. The Magnolia kafuffle still baffles me to this very day!? Jesus Christ...he simply slicked back his 'do and said CUNT a couple of times, and suddenly he was credible  !?

He appears to be a constant entertainer, and I've yet to see even a glimmer of his personality trickle through (both on-screen and off), this leads me to believe that the man IS in fact as vacuous as I perceive him to be. I could be wrong of course, but I doubt it...I'm not always right, but I'm NEVER wrong.

Okay, I do slate him a wee bit TOO much on occasion, but it's all in JEST. I can't truly despise someone I have NEVER met, that would be ludicrous. I just don’t like or respect Tommy as an actor, never have...probably never will. It's that simple.

PS: This rant is a bit up the wall....forgive me. I'm very tired at the moment ;) ...

I agree with everything you said BCV! I can't stand the little tyke either. ;)

My FINAL rating of Tommy Cruise:
Acting: 6/10 (only average, sometimes decent)
Looks: 2/10 (I don't find him the least bit attractive)
Personality: 0/10 (don't ask, I hate his personality)
