THIS WEEKS NEW MOVIES ON VHS/DVD:
THE RULES OF ATTRACTION
ONE HOUR PHOTO
SPY KIDS 2
STEALING HARVARD
CITY BY THE SEA
THE FOUR FEATHERS
TABOO
CRADLE OF FEAR
ANOTHER HEAVEN
BIOHAZARDOUS
DRAGON FIGHTER
CINEMA PARADISO
I saw The Rules Of Attraction (10/10 or A+) in theaters opening weekend and loved it. It has stayed with me ever since. It's the best movie I've seen of 2002. I just finished reading the book yesterday and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie again after reading it. I already have my copy pre-ordered and can't wait to get it.
One Hour Photo looks excellent and I can't wait to check it out. I would have seen it in theaters but instead passed it up for movies like The Good Girl and The Rules Of Attraction, movies that were top priority for me. I'll definitely check it out now though.
I think I'll see Spy Kids 2 sometime because the first one was alright, plus, Carla Gugino is hot.
I'll also check out Stealing Harvard for the hell of it. It looked okay, but not very funny. Although I'm looking forward to seeing the hilarious Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) in a movie.
City By The Sea looked okay, but I've heard it's extremely slow so now I've got this feeling it will be another In The Bedroom. I might check it out sometime though.
The Four Feathers doesn't look bad, but it just doesn't interest me. I like Wes Bentley and Kate Hudson, but I still doubt I'd check it out just for them.
Taboo looks like a fun STV horror flick. I saw the previews to it on the Buying The Cow VHS and it looked entertaining. I don't care for Nick Stahl or Eddie Kaye Thomas though. I'll still check this one out.
Cradle Of Fear sounds surprisingly good and I definitely think I'll check it out.
WHAT WILL YOU RENT/BUY???

Rules of Attraction!
Cinema Paradiso!
One Hour Photo!
....what a wonderful week
Here's plot descriptions for a couple of the lesser known flicks:
CRADLE OF FEAR:
One of the most audacious horror films in recent years, this brutal and shocking anthology takes you on a murderous ride through four crimson-stained stories of savage revenge! Evil has a new name: Kemper, a sickened serial killer and deranged hypnotist now rotting away in an asylum. However, a mere padded cell is not enough to contain the evil as Kemper's satanic servant, "The Man," executes his revenge on the outside world. Mentally-scarred detective Neilson follows the bloody trail in a desperate bid to locate the source of these heinous crimes, but will Kemper get to him first? This outrageous, FX-filled nightmare is not a film for the faint-hearted!
TABOO amazon.com editorial review:
A not-so-innocent parlor game turns deadly in Taboo, a straight-to-video murder mystery that's better than you might expect. It begins on a proverbial dark and stormy night, when six preppy college pals reunite for an all-night ordeal of unexpected mayhem, prompted by the anonymous delivery of five cards bearing labels of shame (prostitute, infidel, homosexual, rapist, hypocrite)... but who fits these accusatory identities, and who sent the damning cards in the first place? One by one, the friends
(including Terminator 3's Nick Stahl and American Pie's Eddie Kaye Thomas) fall prey to the killer among them, who psychotically holds a closely guarded secret. This sordid material begs for the relief of black comedy, but director Max Makowski takes it far too seriously. Fortunately, the surprise twist is clever enough to sustain the mystery, and the talented young cast (especially January Jones, as the prime suspect) makes the most of a deeply cynical screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

SPY KIDS 2- I lovced the first SPY KIDS and missed this in theaters so this is my top pick for this week.
STEALING HARVARD- Looks bad, but I'll probably end up seeing it anyways.
CITY BY THE SEA- Looks kind of dull.
THE FOUR FEATHERS- See CITY BY THE SEA.

Movies I have seen when they were in theatres:
THE RULES OF ATTRACTION-Flipside IMO of Doug Liman's-Go! Several scences disturbing but yet watchable. I wouldnt mind seeing again. 8/10
ONE HOUR PHOTO- A great Robin Williams movie!
His character is hella creepy & thank goodness ur NOT related to him or know anyone like Williams character. A definte movie I wanna see for sure! 9/10
SPY KIDS 2- Well SPK2 would be on my bottom list of movies that I saw last year. The gadgets & SPFX were amusing just the story & pace was dull. A waste of time for Ricardo Montalban & Steve Buscemi. 6/10
STEALING HARVARD- Despite the dislike I have for Tom Green I went & saw this cause Jason Lee is in this! Mild to Very Funny IMO. Movie also stars Megan Mulleady of NBC's Will & Grace. Love to see this movie again for a second spin. 7/10
Movies I wanted to see but never did:
CITY BY THE SEA
THE FOUR FEATHERS

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION - I don't really know if the plot interests me but I think that I'll probably check it out because of what everyone has said about it and the great cast. I'll probably get it from Netflix.
SPY KIDS 2 - I really liked this movie in theaters (8/10), and I thought it was a whole lot better than the first one. I will be buying this sooner or later, because the DVD is packed with bonus features.
ONE HOUR PHOTO - I wanted to see this really badly when I first saw the trailer, but I missed it in theaters. I will definetely be checking this out, it looks really good.
CITY BY THE SEA - A friend of mine told me that this was good, and I like the cast, so I'll probably check it out. I haven't made up my mind on this one yet.
STEALING HARVARD and THE FOUR FEATHERS were both stupid, mediocre movies (4/10) which I will not rent or buy willingly.

I will probably be buying One Hour Photo, it was one of my favorites of 2002. I might rent Rules of Attraction just because of how much praise it gets on these boards, but I know it has a good chance of not being very good, but I'll still give it a shot. Other than that I won't see the others. I saw The Four Feathers in theatres and it was ok but not good enought to warrant a second viewsing.

I'll probably get Rules of Attraction, but I feel like holding out since I'v heard many rumors of a special edition DVD. The others don't interest me

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION - I have already received my copy in the mail!
ONE HOUR PHOTO - Definite rental
SPY KIDS 2 - No intrest whatsoever
STEALING HARVARD - This was a pretty funny movie. May rent to see again.
CITY BY THE SEA - Vastly underrated detective drama, with DeNiro's best dramatic performance in a long time
THE FOUR FEATHERS - Definite rental
TABOO - Sounds VERY interesting. Rental

I will definitely be buying One Hour Photo (8.5/10). I didn't like Rules of Attraction (3/10) , City By The Sea (6/10), Or Stealing Harvard (2/10) so I won't be seeing any of those again. I might see Four Feathers if I am bored enough.

I'll be doing the same flowrchild, One Hour Photo deserves a spot in my collection (9/10). I would like to see RULES OF ATTRACTION one more time, just to solidify my original view on the movie, which was good but unfocused at times (7.5/10). SPY KIDS, STEALING HARVARD, CITY BY THE SEA....all look like crap. Plus I already know how the formulaic "City by the Sea" ends, thanks to a fellow schmoe, which saves me two hours, what o what will I do with it? watch another movie.
BUT, I still have interest in seeing FOUR FEATHERS, which BTW had one of the best posters last year, IMO, and I'm just curious about the old style adventure aspect of it. AND, I would love to see the uncut version of CINEMA PARADISO, the original version is one of my all time favorite movies. When I first saw it I wanted to hug and kiss it, but I opted not too just in case some neighborly peeper decided to lend his/her ear to my spontaneous romantic escapade...;)

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION - My expectations were so high and the film succeeded now and then, but overall the characters were so unsympathetic and self-indulgent, I just didn't give a fuck.
ONE HOUR PHOTO - All too predictable, all too stylish bore with Robin Williams convincing, but not particularly outstanding as nice nutcase. Way overrated, especially on this board.
SPY KIDS 2 - Better than the original, but shares the same problems: underdeveloped characters, too many gadgets, not enough jokes and momentum to keep one's interest.
STEALING HARVARD - Horrible trailer, but I have to admit I would watch this if Tom Green had directed it (Hail the underrated FREDDY GOT FINGERED!).
CITY BY THE SEA - On my list, given the cast and director. Still, not very promising, given the story and De Niro's late output.
THE FOUR FEATHERS - On my list, given the director Shekar Kapur, whose ELIZABETH was stunning back in 1998.

One Hour Photo - Saw this, and for the most part enjoyed it. Robin Williams is great.
Spy Kids 2- Haven't seen the first one yet, but have it ontape at home so I'll check out the first one and if I like that one, I'll see the second one.
Stealing Harward - I'll check it out sometime.
The Four Feathers - Same as above

What!?!? You really need to make up your mind on this one. You gave it a freakin' 8/10 and now you say you hated it throughout!? Hmm, if you give a movie you hated an 8/10 then you really need to find a new rating system. Also, it really didn't make sense that when you gave it an 8/10 you said that the movie wasn't that good but the performances were. If that's the case, then why the 8/10!? Your feelings about the movie and your rating for it just don't go together.

THE RULES OF ATTRACTION - Definately rent. Nver came to my theatre here and after seeing Mike praise it forever on here makes me really want to see this.
ONE HOUR PHOTO - Probably buy. One of my Top 10 movies of last year.
SPY KIDS 2 - No need to see this.
STEALING HARVARD - Might rent sometimes down the line. Big Jason Lee fan.
CITY BY THE SEA - One of my Top 10 worst of last year. Just a horribly boring movie.
THE FOUR FEATHERS - Looks really bad plus Heath Ledger is in it which makes it 1000 times less likely I'll ever see this.

Cradle of Fear is pretty good, but keep in mind that if you are not a big fan of horror movies, you definitely will not like it it. It is also pretty low budget. It was made with alot of love for the genre, though, and it is an anthology of some pretty interesting stories with a nice wraparound story. I recommend to all fans of horror who don't mind watching a movie that was shot on video.

I've already got a screener copy of Rules of Attraction. I really liked it, but I hear there may be an Unrated DVD down the road, like Lion's Gate's Monster Ball DVD, so I'll probably buy it then.
I went ahead and preordered One Hour Photo, haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like my type of movie. I just hope the DVD doesn't have any Robin Williams interviews on it, it's painful for me to watch that guy in an interview.
My store(or the store I work at I should say) got Stealing Harvard last week so I rented that already. I thought it was pretty entertaining, not great, but I did laugh several times throughout. Plus it's only like 75 minutes long, so even if you hate it, it's no big waste of time really. And Jason Lee is always entertaining to watch.
Cradle of Fear I may rent sometime in the future, but not now. I used to be a big fan of Cradle of Filth (still like the old stuff, just their new stuff is kinda...not as good), and their singer is in it, but I've seen a lot of clips from the movie in some music video, and it doesn't look too spectacular.
And the rest, I think I'll pass on those, except Cinema Paradiso, I'll give that a look eventually.

I'd also have to agree with you, although I didn't really "hate" any of the cast, that's such a strong word. Now I "hate" Martha Stewart, but there's not many other famous people I actually "hate." Anyway, I didn't think the movie was very mean-spirited either. Plus, the cast is all excellent. And Bosworth isn't even in the movie that much, I'd say for maybe 2 minutes or so. Biel isn't in the movie all that much either, which was a little disappointing because I actually found her character very funny and entertaining. I think she needed more screen time. But oh well, I guess it wouldn't make sense for her part to be any bigger since she wasn't really a main character in the book either. She was just in it here and there, just like in the movie. Anyway Horror Whore, I remember you saying around the time it was released that you'd see it in theaters if it wasn't for having so many other movies to see. You said that it looked good although you didn't like that they were trying to make it out to be really controversial. So why such the drastic change of mind now? You went from thinking it looked alright to not EVER wanting to see it.

Of all the new releases that I've seen City by the Sea is the best and Stealing Harvard is the least best. I haven't seen Spy Kids 2 so I might check that out sometime later.
City by the Sea ***1/2 8.5 A-
(Slow moving yes, but powerful and contains Robert DeNiro's best performance in years)
The Four Feathers ***1/2 8.5 A- (a sweeping and exciting epic)
One Hour Photo *** 7.5 B+ (also slow moving and also powerful and chilling with Robin William's best performance ever!)
The Rules of Attraction *** 7.0 B (A little too stylized in it's direction but an interesting tale about unreqiuted love)
Stealing Harvard **1/2 6.0 C+ (ok, mildly amusing, utterly disposable and instantly forgettable)

I guess I just got so annoyed hearing about it so much. I did want to see it in theaters, but then after reading so much about it I didn't think it was the kind of movie I cared about. And the cast sucks IMO. I did watch a few clips on Yahoo! and all the wierd shots really got on my nerves. I guess the only way I'll se RoA is if I win the DVD from the contest here. ;)

Yeah, sometimes that happens to me too. I'll kind of want to see a movie, but then by the time it gets to video I might lose interest, especially if it's one that has too much hype, because then I get sick of hearing about the movie and just don't want to see it anymore. It's fine with me if you don't want to see The Rules Of Attraction, you don't have to, but it wouldn't hurt to rent it sometime if there's nothing else in that you want to rent. And yeah, it does have a lot of stylish scenes, but it's not really annoying, at least to me it wasn't. I thought it was perfect how they did it to introduce the characters, I really can't think of a better way to do it. After reading the book, I don't think they could have thought of a better way to introduce the characters. Because in the book they introduce a character, then go back in time and introduce the next, then go back in time and introduce the next. It would be kind of stupid in the movie if they kept saying ***5 minutes before now*** and went to the next character. The reverse was just perfect. It may not seem necessary to some, but it actually was. I found it very cool and I thought the cinematography was just excellent. It was like David Fincher directed a college flick!

Since it's #1 on JoBlo's list, The Rules of Attraction is a priority. I'll be renting it as soon as I can. I will probably rent The Four Feathers and City By the Sea as well, but I'm not in as big a rush.
I've seen One Hour Photo (7/10) and I might buy it just for Robin Williams' awesome performance. I've also seen Spy Kids 2 (6/10), but I sure won't be buying that one.
Shit, I forgot a movie. That's right, the sequel to the classic Bloody Murder also comes out Tuesday. I never saw the first one because I've heard it sucks. Although I have considered renting it with friends just to make fun of it. Anyway, this sequel is supposedly an improvement on the original. Who knows, maybe I'll check it out for the hell of it someday, but I don't "plan" on it anytime soon.

I just watched One Hour Photo and City by the Sea last night.
One Hour Photo is a very sad and disturbing movie. Robin Williams is very creepy in that 'normal' guy sort of a way. Great direction and great use of color (Or lack thereof). Highly recommended. (7/10)
City by the Sea is....bad. It's just...bad. Boring plot, boring cast and I can say with all honesty that I didn't give a shit about any single character in that film. There's no one there you can really get behind. One of the worst movies I've seen in a while. (2/10)
Already seen ONE HOUR PHOTO. Overrated movie and overrated performance by Robin Williams (he's creepier as Robin Williams). Thin and derivative. FOUR FEATHERS is light as a feather and Kate Hudson is terribly miscast. CITY BY THE SEA is one of last year's most overlooked films. Well-acted and moving, it's a much more satisfying father/son movie than the vastly overrated ROAD TO PERDITION. Hated RULES OF ATTRACTION. If you like sniffing brown-streaked underwear, this one's for you. No interest in seeing STEALING HARVARD or SPY KIDS 2 (haven't seen the first one either).
I took a trip to the video store today and I rented a couple of movies, here they are:
ONE HOUR PHOTO
STEALING HARVARD
BROWN SUGAR
TABOO
GOOD WILL HUNTING
GROUNDHOG DAY
THE CABLE GUY
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
I was going to rent CLERKS since PorcheRacer recommended it to me, but it was out. I'll probably get it next time if it's in. Also, I really wanted to pick up the first season of Six Feet Under on DVD since I've never seen the show, but it was checked out already.

I watched One Hour Photo tonight and thought it was pretty good. It could have been better though, and it wasn't quite as great as it looked, but it was still good. I'd give it a 7/10 (B-).

I watched Taboo this morning and I was a little disappointed. It started out promising, and it was actually decent for the first half, but the second half went downhill and the ending was stupid. Not bad for STV, but it could have been so much better, too bad it had to go downhill.
Grade: 6/10 (C+) --- I wish I could give it a higher rating...

Hopefully I'll find some time to watch SPY KIDS 2 today, if not I'll definitley catch it tomorrow.

My friends rented a bunch of new movies after school today. I'm not exactly sure what they rented, but I will be watching a couple with them tomorrow night.
Horror Whore, maybe they rented The Rules Of Attraction ;)...
Anyway, I watched Stealing Harvard today and thought it was pretty lame. It's pretty bad when a comedy doesn't make me laugh even once. The jokes were immature and un-original. Although it didn't make me laugh, it never really bored me either. I do wish I would have rented Swept Away instead though.

They probably did, even so I probably won't end up watching it. They did mention they wanted to see THE GOOD GIRL and I haven't seen that yet so I hope they rented that.

Mike, trust me, YOU DON'T.
Well, if they did rent it you may as well watch it, at least you wouldn't have to pay for it then. They probably rented Stealing Harvard as well, which was pretty lame in my opinion. Hopefully they rented The Good Girl. And if they did rent it I hope you like it.

I'm sure it's better than Stealing Harvard. I was going to rent Swept Away, but then I decided to put it back because I already had eight movies. I think I'll rent it next week though.

Why the hell did they rent DRIVE ME CRAZY?
Anyway, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (7/10 or B) was some nice "light" fun. It's entertaining and funny. I thought it was really enjoyable. Which ones do you think you'll watch with them?

I'll probably only ending up having time to watch one movie with them tomorrow night before they're due back and my pick is definitley THE GOOD GIRL. I'm not interested in anything else.

One Hour Photo was brilliant. Incredibly detailed, deep, touching, disturbing - nearly perfect. Everytime I watch it there's something else I get out of it. The acting is unbelievable. Robin William sinks into the role, and the big movie star we know disappears. The first time his character comes in contact with Michael Vartan's is one of the best scenes in any movie. Just so detailed, so real, so incredible. 9/10 - # 1 (Along with Secretary, and About Schimdt) of 2002.
I picked up the widescreen version today... Can't wait to watch it. I also rented The Rules of Attraction. I'll be watching it alittle bit later, and let you know what I think.
I never understoof why the Spy Kids film are so acclaimed. They look like crap, and the first 10 minutes of the first flick were so bad I couldn't get past it. Oh well...

I hope I like it, but I don't know if I will. I was talking to PorcheRacer in the chat room last night and he said that he saw some of it and it was stupid. Plus, the whole drag queen thing is a little bit of a turn off. I have nothing against gay people at all, but if you're going to be gay then be gay, don't pretend to be someone you aren't. I don't mind if it's just for laughs, but serious drag queens kind of creep me out. Now I don't hate them or anything, I don't hate anyone, I just think it's kind of stupid for a guy to dress up as a woman, it makes you look stupid. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with being gay, but dressing in drag is another thing, I won't say it's "wrong," but it does look ridiculous. Hopefully I'll like Hedwig though.

Ahh, I see... The reasons for his drag queen.. ness (?) are made clear... I thought it was pretty disturbing and sad actually. Go in with an open mind and you should like it.
I just watched The Rules of Attraction. Good movie. Probably around an 8/10 - funny, sad, vulgar, disturbing, and "all that jazz."

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of the most ovverated movies EVER! I'd give it a 4/10, it should have been a movie like The Rules Of Attraction that made 246$ million and not something like that. Anyway, I'm going to the video store in a minute and I'll probably rent One Hour Photo .

I haven't even seen MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (never will) but I can tell just by the previews that it's overrated! I would agree that it doesn't deserve 246 million without seeing it! There are certainly much better movies that bombed....

One Hour Photo and Rules of Attraction are excellent movies!
Come on guys, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is no less deserving than all of those other big blockbusters. I'm glad it was a huge hit and helped out a smaller studio. SIGNS sure as hell didn't deserve to make 227 Million or so, but it did, and that's one of the most overrated pieces of trash of 2002. If that gets to make a shitload of money, then there's no reason a smaller movie shouldn't be able to as well. Besides, if a lot of the smaller movies you guys liked would have made as much money as MBFGW did, then you'd like them even less, just admit it. The more money a movie makes, the more people despise it. If MBFGW would have made 15 Million or so, then you wouldn't hear all of these comments saying how overrated it is, and more people probably would have liked it more.

See...Mike...Now I defintely don't have the hatred that others on this board seem to have for MBFGW, but I definitely can't say that I agree with your stance with it being as deserving movies such as the blockbusters...Let me tell you why. Now first off I am all about the success of smaller, "independant" (man I hate using that term) films. I mean hell...My favorite movies over the last 5 years have all been smaller films...And most of my favorite films this year were definitely not what you would consider mainstream fare, films such as Punch-Drunk Love andOne Hour Photo, among others. And those smaller films, I personally think think those films deserved all the praise that was lumped onto them, and, yeah they definitely deserved to do better in the box office then they did...But see the thing there is that those are actually films...Now you can sit back and watch these movies and think to yourself "Alright, this might not be my type of movie, I might be somewhat disappointed, but I have to at least give respect to certain aspects of what is done very well here"...But see, now the reason that there is all this ballyhoo over My Big Fat Greek Wedding is that it really isn't anything special...I mean of course it is pleasant enough, it has some good scenes in it, a decent performance maybe. But you cannot tell me you can watch that film and find it to be this spectacular peice of filmmaking. I mean it's literally a glorified sitcom pilot, I mean it fills every cliche that one would expect to find in something so mediocre. And that's another point...So you think Signs is mediocre...So that's not deserving of the 200 million it made...Well compare the mediocrity of that fiml...What you didn't like that about that, and look at MBFGW and look at what's mediocre about that "movie" and tell me what you come to that conclusion there. I mean it's just that a movie that earns that much money, it should've earned it...And MBFGW pretty much fails on every account. So just take that into account and see if that makes any sense to you.

Just that post makes me hate MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING even more without even seeing the movie, something I didn't think was possible.

After all the glowing reviews I watched THE RULES OF ATTRACTION with my friends instead of THE GOOD GIRL. Big mistake.

Sure MBFGW is nothing special, but neither is SIGNS, MIB2, AUSTIN POWERS 3 (God, I swear they recycled every single joke from the previous two with this one), etc... And they made a bunch of money. MBFGW is a nice "light" little movie, plain and simple. Obviously audiences found something in it or it wouldn't have been as big of a hit. It got where it was with word of mouth, and repeat viewings helped it a lot too. And the fact that not many romantic comedies were being released and its PG rating certainly helped it. So I still stand by my statement that it's no less deserving than all of the crappy summer blockbusters released. I don't see why nobody bitches about all of those other movies being hits, but yet it's such a big deal that this clean and harmless little movie hit it big, I find it ridiculous.

You're very welcome! I'm glad you loved it, I had a feeling you would. I didn't quite give it a perfect score the first time I saw it, but after making all of my family and friends watch it (each time I watched it with them), I can honestly say that it quickly became one of my favorite films. It's one of the few films I can think of that is actually flawless.
I hope you love Threesome as well, it's so truthful and funny. It's my favorite college film, along with The Rules Of Attraction.

I am going to check out Spy Kids 2 and One Hour Photo. Both look appealing to me. :D
Mike says:
The more money a movie makes, the more people despise it.
Only if it were a lame movie like MBFGW. Reasons I hated it:
1. Replace it with any other ethnic group (MY BIG FAT ROMANIAN WEDDING, MY BIG FAT POLISH WEDDING, MY BIG FAT FILIPINO WEDDING, MY BIG FAT IRAQI WEDDING) and it wouldn't have made a whole lot of difference. And it would've been just as insulting to that ethnic group.
2. Unless a woman is drop-dead gorgeous, no man would put up with such a loud, obnoxious family. Yes, men are that shallow.
3. It offers some of the worst acting I've ever seen. The biggest offender - Andrea Martin. This kind of broad acting works for an SNL skit, but not for a full-length feature.
4. For a woman to fall in love with a guy who only starts paying attention to her when she decides to wear make-up and contact lenses is an insult to women. PRETTY WOMAN looks profound next to this movie.
5. I realize it's a romantic comedy and a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is in order. But it's difficult to do when the movie consistently insults one's intelligence. Heck, I'm not even that smart and I was thoroughly insulted.
6. I wouldn't have minded how stupid the movie was if it at least offered a few laughs. The Windex joke is not even funny the first time, but to repeat it several times? This is a movie in desperate need of a laugh track.
Ok, I'm going to stop now before I seriously offend anyone. It's possible I wouldn't have hated the movie as much had not so many people embraced it. But the fact remains that the movie is mediocre, at best, and certainly not deserving of its commercial success.
So there.
