View Full Version : What Happened to Tom Hanks? He used to be cool....
I know I'm going to be in the serious minority on this one, which I'm used to (coughshawshankcough) but am I the only one who liked Tom Hanks A LOT better in the late 80s/early 90s?
Seriously, I'll take Bachelor Party, The Burbs, and Joe Vs. The Volcano over Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan any day.
I think he's a little like Nic Cage: They both made fun, quirky movies for a while, then they won an oscar and got all serious on us. (hmm....maybe not Cage)

Maybe he'll do Bosom Buddies: The Movie as his next film... :D

For me, Hanks's acting skills are getting better every time I see him on screen, and he seems to be as fun and as friendly a guy as he ever was. I think the duder's great.
A Bosom Buddies movie?!?!
I would be first in line for that.

What has happened to Tom Hanks, you ask?
He started making good, meaningful movies in which he turns excellent performances, that's all.

I think Tom Hanks really improved his acting skills throughout the 90's and today.

I think Tom Hanks is overrated, he's a good actor but like, every critic in the world consider him to be one of the greatest actors there is. He's good but he's far from great, I don't really see the difference between his characters.

i much prefer hanks now days. i think that his choice in films is better, and i feel that he's been giving the best performances of his career these past couple years.

I agree 100%. I'm not much of a comedy kind of guy anyway, so I like Hanks a lot more now than in the late 80's. In the last ten years he has been giving some of the best performances of the decade and I don't see him slowing down any time soon. :)

i like tom hanks now, and i liked him in the 80's. i like him in dramas and i like him in comedies. i'd like to see him do a comedy once in a while now, but he is good in dramas, and for some reason, even if i don't want to see the movie he's in, and i end up seeing it anyways, i am glad i did. it happened with castaway. i like him. but i must say that i like how he puts his 80's style goofiness in some of his movies now. like in you've got mail, the BEST thing in the movie (and this is sooo small but i love it) is when he's outside the restaurant with his friend waiting to meet meg ryan's character and he asks his friend to look inside and see if she's pretty. his friend says yes, and then tom hanks goes into a little funny rampage or whatever and he holds onto the fence and says "i knew she'd be!!!" and that makes me laugh every time! i love it, and he's great!

Tom Hanks has always been great. He can act and is a funny guy a tough combination.
Look at De Niro (and this is just my opinion) he's a fine actor but can the guy do comedy? I don't think so. He was pretty weak in Meet The Parents and Analyze This.

I'd take Apollo 13, Philadelphia, and Saving Private Ryan any day over his comedies. Although it would be nice to see him in a comedy every once in awhile

Very good then, 100x better now. One of the best ever, IMHO. I'll watch him in anything.

Seriously, I would have to say I enjoy him in dramas and comedies and in the 80s and 90s. he's just entertaining. I would have to say the 80s/early 90s hank was more entertaining (i still have to see some of his big 90s movies) . Big and Bachalor Party and even Dragnet fucking rule if you ask me.
I cannot believe I forgot about Big. That is probably Hanks's best movie of all time.

As stated many times above, Tom Hanks is hilarious AND he's an excellent dramatic actor, too.
Now how many actors can you name who are not only equally strong in comedies and dramas, but who do both better than 99% of the actors currently working?
Only Robin Williams comes to mind for me at the moment.

I should watch Hanks' early films. It would be interesting to see how he's evolved from a comic to a dramatic actor.
The real reason I want to post is because I just watched Philadelphia. He actually plays a gay man suffering from AIDS. Not the type of subject often tackled in a mainstream film, let alone a Tom Hanks movie. He gave a very good performance in the role--it seems he's more versile than his critics believe.

I actually prefer the dramas he's doing now.
Although I would like to see him do another comedy similar to the ones he did in the 80s. That would be really fun to see.

I gotta back up The Claw and Bob here folks. Dragnet is the greatest film of all time. You can have your Saving Private Ryan and your Apollo 13, I'll keep my Dragnet.

Why choose one over the other? The stuff he used to do was fun (Bachelor party, etc.) and I still enjoy those films. But I also love seeing him do stuff like Saving Private Ryan, Philadelphia, etc.
To me, he's good in anything, and i'm just happy to see the man succeeding and becoming a star because he deserves it. And damn if that guy isn't humble about it all too. :)
If it's anyway to reach some middle ground, my SECOND-favorite Tom Hanks performance (after Big) is in Road to Perdition.

Hmm 80's = No Oscar Wins
90's = Two Oscars Wins
Now what will I choose...?
Cher- One Oscar Win
Alfred Hitchcock-No Oscar Wins
Hmm...who makes more important films?

I always thought he was ok but not great until The Green Mile changed it for me. I think that performance just put him over for me.

For what its worth, The Money Pit is my favorite Hanks film, although by no means his best. Forrest Gump is his best, and my second favorite. Overall, a great actor, and a seemingly stand-up guy.

I like him in all of his movies but I think that in recent years he has lost a certain spark of boyishness he once had. He seems like he is a little bored with it all, but that is from all of the adulation he constantly recieves. He has handled celebrity way better than 99% of the others. He is happily married (not out chasing young chicks)and seems to have his head pretty screwed on. Recently, he revisited the Bosom Budy cast which was pretty nice.
At least we all seem to agree he's a cool guy, no matter which era Hanks was the best.
