Aging Makes Clooney Consider Full-Time Directing
Hollywood hunk George Clooney is starting to consider a full-time career as a movie director - because he doesn't believe he'll stay good looking enough to keep on acting. The Ocean's Eleven star, who stepped behind the camera for his new flick Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, admits that he'll soon have to seriously consider life as a filmmaker when his looks begin to fade. He says, "Eventually, my looks will fall apart and I'll have to give up. You direct to have some control over your career when people say, 'I don't want to see you act anymore.'" The 41-year-old screen star adds, "Paul Newman is acting almost into his 80s, but name another one. Robert Duvall? Fine. But he's Robert Duvall! He did To Kill A Mockingbird. I did Batman & Robin. He did Network. I did Battle Of The Network Stars. There is a difference."
I like this idea, since he showed a lot of potential with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Care to comment anyone?

This doesn't sound too suprising to me, especially his reasoning. Despite his obvious good looks, what I've always liked about him was his honesty by way of humor.
He's always been self-depricating about his career but in a way that you know he's serious. He's extremely practical and realistic when it comes to his career and Hollywood, which he should be. If you watch you can tell that he purposely is trying to steer away from movies that are just about his looks: Ocean's 11 was an ensemble, Out of Sight same deal, Solaris was about the story, O' Brother was a Coen's Brother movie, Three Kings was about the story and the message... And when it is all about him, the results aren't all that memorable.
And you probably don't know by looking at him, but he's as big a cinephile as most of on this board, maybe even bigger. I'd love to just sit down with the man and pick his brain about movies.
If he wants to move on completely behind the camera, I'll miss seeing his mug on the big screen, but if he can churn out work on the level of Confessions, than I say "Roll with it baby!"
Besides, the man has worked with David O'Russell, Soderbergh and the Coens, plus he's wonderfully directed a screenplay by Charlie "What a Trip" Kauffman, you can't screw up with that kind of pedigree.... and if you do, well then you need to find the fastest way out of Hollywood.
On a side note, "ahem"...... 1000th post BABY!....... that is all.

Welcome to the ranks of Super Schmoes, darling! Your tiara and sash should arrive via UPS in a day or two. (My scepter was broken and took a long time to replace... )
George is often compared to Cary Grant, and he sort of did the same thing. It wouldn't surprise me at all. However, I think (like Newman), he'll hold onto his looks for a good long time. That's the cool thing about being ruggedly handsome: you age well. (Not that I'd know...)

I too think that Clooney's good looks will stick with him for a long time still (he might even get better with time, as Harrison Ford was for a while and as Sean Connery is in my opinion), but heck, the guy's got a realistic view of things, and if he thinks directing full-time is the best choice for him, then I'm with him. CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND makes me confident the man knows his shite.
Well, Clooney's a great director (from the one film of his that I've seen), so I think this is a good move. He'll probably be in movies for at least five more years, though.
P.S. Connery looked best in '64, Ford in '81.:D

It's sad that he'd even consider quitting just becuase losing his good looks. His acting should go beyond his good looks. But, guess not.

That's how Hollywood works. It's a looks based business, talent is optional, I mean look at most of the questionable "careers" that litter this business. You think Jennifer Love Hewitt has a career cause she's a seminal acting talent, or Freddy Prinze Jr. for that matter?
If you just happen to be good looking AND talented, shit, they think they've found the Holy Grail.
I think Clooney knows his limitations as an actor, hell, the man doesn't even consider himself a real leading man! Besides even if he does age well and he's a guy, you still don't work as often as you did when you were more youthful.
I've always believed that I would rather be a director in Hollywood, rather than an actor:
1.) When you make it, you're solely admired for your work not your looks.
2) Unless you are Speilberg or Scorcese you're not going to be hounded by the most of the population.
3) Your career can last past the age of 40
There's actually an interesting article that gives you a little more insight into how Clooney views himself. Just try and avoid the frequent intervals of the female interviewer's fantasies.

Dustin Hoffman looks like a pitbull on acid, but he's still banging out great performances. But he is Hoffman, so that is kinda expected...
I do like the move, though. Clooney showed some good skills in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

This is my favorite part of the story. I love his sense of humor. Whatever move he makes, I'm sure it will be the right one for him.
