First off, let it be known that you can't find this movie anywhere anymore. It used to be in most video stores, now if you're lucky they only carry the shitty sequel. Which brings me to my point.
I watched part II last night with a friend. I hadn't seen the movie since i was a kid, but i couldn't help but notice how fetishized it was (if you don't understand that concept please don't respond to this post). Between the way that the Estevez girl (who, by the way, i can not believe was Betty Fucking Finn from Heathers) was tied up at the end, to multiple shots of girls rolling around with each other, it simply reeked of S+M/lesbian fantasies. I also have read that the first one was blatant in it's homosexual imagery (i haven't seen it since i was way too young to understand such images but certain scenes do stand out). What's the deal with these movies?
The 80's was such a creepier time for this genre because it seems that the directors etc. had carte blanche with themes, imagery, what have you. Disturbing on many levels (the underlying fetish elements i mean). My theory: homosexuality is much more accepted now than it was back in 1983, so the guys who were yelling "fag" at each other in movies (check out any of the 80's flicks, it is THE most common insult) have since come out of the closet and no longer need to sublimate their homoerotic urges. Ditto for the directors who no longer need to make movies with coded imagery.

well i like the points you raise,as for the homosexual images in the first film,if i remember correctly angela saw her father or uncle i think in bed with another man,which was shocking to her along with her aunt's desire to have a girl which all eventually lead to her killing spree. int he sequel while there may be some fetishistic images i think it was more of a coincidence than planned out. also if you have a best buy near you i almost gurantee you could find sleepaway camp for purchase there they almost always have the vhs and most times the dvd.

Saw- from what experience i have with media courses in college as well as working for a major broadcasting company, no images are coincidental (which is what makes movie deconstruction so much fun!). Thanks for the tip though. Amazon carries it too, i just don't really feel like buying it (though i know that is what will end up happening)

What about the bit in Home Alone 2 with the chimney smoke that makes it look as if the smoke is coming out of the World Trade Center? That's pretty coincidental.

I think that the BLATENT sexual imagery is an inescapable Fact of horror.
No matter how disgusting
~~~I haven't seen Sleepaway Camp 2 in about a million years (it IS disappearing!! The only place I can rent it in St John's is BLockbuster, and as I've stated before...THEY HATE MY GUTS!!!)~~~
When I used to watch NOES as a wee tot, I never got any of the implicatations surrounding the kills, or Freddy's Motives at all. Watching it now, its perfectly clear that It WAS intentional..
(NOTE: NOES is a terrible example, I know...)
I've always thought that Beacause The horror genre is so poorly recieved in the general public, filmakers actually feel the need to include ridiculous innuendo, etc....not that it wouldn't add to a story (again, NOES)...taboo issues like these Have ALWAYS found their way into the genre. They're DEFINITELY for shock value.
I sincerely HOPE that issues such as these, being Raised in horror movies, will usually deal with them with a sense of humor.(Like in the Sleepaway Camp series..
Who in their right minds take those movies seriously?!?!?)
Perhaps that could give the public (well teenagers, namely. I'm guessing that IS where the films are marketed towards) a bit of a better perspective on them.
Romeo- thanks for the look out. I'll read it when my boss isn't hovering over my shoulder.
Regarding your post though. No doubt many directors realize the campiness of the genre and probably most do try to have a little fun with it, tongue in cheek kind of stuff, but this is different. The specific choice to allow the man's hands to be bound behind his back while the woman's are suspended in the air, hanging from something in the wall is deliberate (although not necessarily conscious on the part of the director- thus he makes a deliberate choice to include the image though probably without realizing why). I don't think subtley coded imagery is ever there for a tongue in cheek effect. Movies are a form of art, and all artists (and i use this term loosely when applying it to horror movies) need to sublimate their forbidden desires, id impulses, etc.)
I bought this movie on DVD at Best Buy almost 6 months ago for only $14.99. I think this movie is a classic. The ending will stick with you forever. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
Quoted by Best Buy:
SYNOPSIS
When Angela (Felissa Rose) and her cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tierston) go off to the dilapidated Camp Arawak for a summer vacation, a series of murders coincidentally occurs: a boy drowns in an overturned rowboat, a sex pervert is scalded to death in a vat of boiling water, another boy dies of a killer-bee attack, and yet another is stabbed to death in a shower. But the real victims are the script, dialogue, and acting, killed off in the opening scenes. Two even worse sequels followed this film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
Is it believable, if so, why should I watch this fim..... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/confused.gif
SPOILERS FOR SLEEPAWAY CAMP!!!
!
!
! LOOK AWAY!
The killer is the boy we see in the beginning of the film, swimming with his family. After his father dies His psycho aunt basically psychologically ruins him and molds him into what she wants him to be, A girl named Angela, and he/she is the killer. Although there is a popular theory that his/her cousin Ricky, is a killer as well, but that's debatable.
Hope that helps.
Sorry but I didn't really pick up on these homosexual themes. Also I don't really recall the word "fag" being used all that often as an insult. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.
