Conrad L Hall, the Hollywood cinematographer who died last month, has been given the American Society of Cinematographers best photography award.
He won for his work in last year's film Road To Perdition, directed by Sam Mendes, which is up for six Oscars.

Hall, 76, died of complications from bladder cancer in January.

His award, presented on Sunday in Los Angeles, was accepted by his son, Conrad W Hall.

"I guess if you're going to go, (it's good) to go out on top," his son said.

Road to Perdition has also been nominated for a best cinematography award at this year's Oscars, which will be decided next month.

It is the 10th nomination Hall has received in his career.

Hall had earlier worked with Mendes on the Oscar-winning film American Beauty, which won him a best cinematography Oscar in 2000.

Jude Law was a hitman in Road to Perdition

He also won an Oscar in 1970 for his cinematography on the Paul Newman/Robert Redford western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Other films that featured Hall's work included Cool Hand Luke, In Cold Blood, Searching for Bobby Fischer and Marathon Man.

Born in Tahiti, Hall was the son of author James Norman Hall, who co-wrote Mutiny on the Bounty.

Conrad W Hall has followed his father into film-making, credited as cinematographer on 2002's Panic Room, which starred Jodie Foster.

The American Society of Cinematographers dates back from 1919, but this year celebrated only its 17th awards show.

The awards also honoured television, giving the best TV award to Michael Barrett for CSI: Miami.

Well, I certainly believe that Mr Hall richly deserved this accolade. The cinematography in "Road to Perdition" was pretty bloody gorgeous. I shall definitely be rooting for Conrad at this years Academy Awards ceremony. If he DOES happen to bag the award, I just hope people will not presume that this is solely due to his untimely death.

Like you, I'm thrilled with this and would be rooting for him anyway, deceased or not. His cinematography in Road to Perdition is hands-down the best of 2002 and I'd be a little twitter-pinked if he wasn't given the little statue for it. Good for the ASC, I say!

One thing about Road to Perdition that pretty much everyone agrees on is the cinematography. Conrad Hall definitely deserves the Oscar. By the way, I wonder how well Sam Mendes will adjust to the loss of Hall?

Really am pleased to hear this news. Conrad L Hall really had an eye on him- he could take the most ordinary shot and turn it into something of marvel.

Sam Mendes' films, as well as being praised to the Heavens, are often noted for their sublime cinematography- and Hall's way of creating beauty out of the basic really fitted in gorgeously with the theme of American Beauty.

Mr Mendes' films probably won't lose their sparkle, but he'll be hard pushed to find a better cinematographer out there with the experience and knowledge of Conrad L Hall.

It's good to know he won, and not only because of his death. The cinematography was excellent, and even if the movie became boring, there was always something beautiful to look at

He's one of the few cinematographers I really know by name. I've loved his work in American Beauty, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Road to Perdition, etc. He deserved this honor.
