Every once in a while I get a kick of wanting to purchase an old horror movie for the heck of it and because it looks entertaining to me. This time around I'm interested in the 1970's mutant bear movie "Prophecy". Even though I'll probably pick this one up anyways, does anyone have any comments about it that may change my mind or encourage me further? Please, no spoilers though.

OK , I'm not ashamed to admit it ........ I love Prophecy .
Yes I know it's cheesy and a bit too talky but I can't help it . It had one of the best early " teaser " trailers ever where all you saw was this mutant embryo . As the camera pulled back further , a voice over described how the beast would " single mindedly kill every living creature it came across " .... or words to that effect .
The cast is much better than the subject matter would normally allow and it actually has a good story . If anyone has'nt seen it , give it a look ........... it's great fun .

The "INSIDE OUT" bear is worth Prophecy alone, and Armand Assante trying to maintain his dignity.

I know its vague, but Prophecy is a guilty pleasure film thats really hard to describe.

"Prophecy" takes itself far too seriously for its own good. That and the bear suit are what really do it in. That doesn't mean it's not fun in ways unintended by the filmmakers, or that it doesn't have some moments that are actually pretty effective, few and far between as they may be. Yeah, "Prophecy" is a bad movie ...but also a guilty pleasure.

Is it bad in a Lake Placid, Anaconda, heck even Bats kind of way?

Well, I actually kind of liked "Anaconda," so I guess I'd say "Prophecy" is bad in that kind of way. I thought "Lake Placid" and "Bats" were just stupid.

But remember, we're talking about a movie that was made in 1979, and it definitely feels like its from that era. And "Anaconda" was sort of tongue-in-cheek, while "Prophecy" is dead serious about itself.

As I've stated in other threads, I was fortunate enough to see the original uncut version of this movie WAY back in the day at a preview showing. It was gorier and had a more subtle ending. I saw it with a couple other friends and we told all our friends that it was a real kick ass monster movie, and then they cut it to PG and just made it an all right movie. I hoped to see a director's cut some day on DVD, but since Mr. John F. died last year that is never to be.

Man, I had no idea this movie was so popular on the boards, or that so many people's experience with it was so close to mine.

The ending I saw was subtle. Right after the plane flies overhead you start to hear that grunting noise from the beginning and you see a very large tree shake. There was no hokey monster popping up.

Huh, interesting. I guess they felt the movie needed to deliver one last scare.

I remember the death scenes lasting a bit longer (ie, gorier), especially where the guy is crawling under the fence. You saw more blood spraying his face and more of a crunching sound. This would have easily been a hard 'R' but was cut down to PG, but not because of the test cards we turned in that night!

The movie was released uncut in Britain and was recently shown in this form on terrestrial t.v.
