I just saw Phantasm for the first time, and I'm really confused about the ending. Did he get sucked into the other world? Is he dead? How did Jody die in a car accident? Any help would be much appriciated

Alright, a more appropriate question would be "are all the movies connected?" I was really hoping it wasn't one of those series that makes a bunch of unconnected movies. I didn't think that is was, but I kept thinking of the NOES endings for some reason. Thanks for you help, now I can't wait to see the next four.

You can't stop evil.

That's what I think.

****SPOILERS****

Well, here's my theory. Everything in the movie is real until the first time Jody goes to the cemetery, by himself. As he flees, the Tall Man's hearse chases after him. It doesn't look good for Jody, and suddenly headlights flash across the screen, only to be revealed as Mike. At this point, I believe the dream begins. Jody was killed by the Tall Man's hearse, and later Mike dreams up the rest, thus explaining why Reggie has no memory of the previous events (and is still alive). Convinced it was all a dream, Mike goes upstairs to pack, only to find out that he's just kidding himself, and that the Tall Man is indeed very much real.

****END SPOILERS****

Of course, it's just a theory. I'm probably horribly wrong.

Mike, so cut up and emotionally drained after the death of his parents and then JODY blurred the line between fantasy and reality, and got into the whole TALL MAN story so much that he became confused as to whether the TALL MAN really did exist or it was his imagination running away with him because he'd barely slept since his brothers funeral. But, obviously, it turned out he wasn't actually imagining it all.

Well that's what i think.

I don`t think there`s supposed to be a definete, concrete explanation for the ending (or anything else in the movie, for that matter!)

yeah, check out the sequals. at least the 2nd one, it kicks serious ass. reggie wit a 4 barrel shotgun hell yeah.

but my theory has been, it was just a way to leave it open for a sequal and really nothing more. give you one last scare before the credits. damn i love that movie.

My take on it is that Don Coscarelli just wanted to finish the film with a bang. And so he did. That ending shocked the hell out of me when I first saw it when I was about ten.

But if you watch part II, youll see it wasnt just a dream cause the Tall Man and all his little dwarf henchmen are in the house and try to kidnap Jody and Reggie. YOull see all you gotta do is see part II. Watch it and well talk. Trust me, if you havent seen part two your gonna love it cause to me it surpassed the original.. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
