View Full Version : Is Gwyneth Paltrow a complete snob??

I've enjoyed Gwyneth Paltrow's performances in some films, but the more I hear about her off-screen behaviour, the more I hate her. First off, I can't stand social snobbery of any kind, and it seems this girl has it in spades. For evidence:

1. She comes from a wealthy family on her father's side (the Paltrows are well-known on the East Coast social set). She attended the Spence School in New York, a very expensive private educational facility, which should tell you something.

2. She's been quoted as saying she prefers living in London because "you meet a better class of person there".

3. It might be spite, but she's lambasted former beau Ben Affleck's fiance J.Lo publicly as being "too common" and "not good enough for Ben".

4. She spends every Thanksgiving and Christmas in The Hamptons either with the Spielbergs or with members of her father's rather wealthy family.

5. She's been known to not socialise with co-stars or crew members of films she worked on whom she considered "working class".

6. Friends of the couple have said that Gwyneth gets along with her latest boyfriend completely because "he's her social and intellectual equal".

So, to wit...is this woman Hollywood's biggest social snob, or what? I've been at the receiving end of class snobbery (being working class, myself), so personally I can't stand that sort of behaviour. Does anyone here know any different? Or do you agree that this woman deserves a slap across the face from my working-class hand??

To be honest with you, I don't care how celebrities act in their lives. They are in the business of making movies, and I don't think we should sit here and say that we now don't like them because they act snobby. As long as Ms. Paltrow keeps making good movies, I won't be complaining about her.

I don't think that most of the things you mentioned make her a snob...
1. Can you blame her for growing up in a wealthy family? Being sent to a private school by her parents at a young age wasn't her decision.
2. I remember her comparing the life in London to the superficialness of the Hollywood lifestyle, not with the United States in general. Isn't it legitimate to say that you prefer a certain way of living.
3. Fair enough... do you like all the new flames of your ex-boyfriends? Well, I certainly don't like all of my ex-girlfriends' new chaps.
4. She spends Christmas with her family or her friends??? Wow, she's a real freak! :D She's in the film business and I don't think it's so strange to see friends which work in the same field once in a while.
5. That's just a rumour, isn't it? ... but if that's true: Shame on you, Gwyneth!
6. IMO, the social level doesn't matter in a relationship... but loving a person for his/her intellect (among other things) isn't really abnormal.

So what do you think?

P.S.: I don't care about stars' off-screen behaviour at all... maybe that's the reason why I don't get that mad at skinny Gwynnie

I like Gwenyth but I wonder why she continue playing roles where she has a British accent (ex: Posession?!?!) Anyway, unless I have met or encountered her snobness I have yet to cross her off of my fave celeb list.

I didn't like her before, and I sure as hell don't like her skinny-ass now.

Or do you agree that this woman deserves a slap across the face from my working-class hand?? That seems kind of harsh, couldn't you just wrestle naked with her in jello instead?;):D

I don't see how this makes her a snob. Just because she has a wealthy background, doesn't mean that she's a snob. Not to say she isn't, I haven't a clue, but generalizing that all rich people who make use of their money (nice vacations and good schools) are snobs, isn't truly fair.

Somebody asked her about this a couple of years ago, and I remember her reply was "In this day and age, if you sit up straight and chew with your mouth closed, you're considered a snob." :D

If she refuses to fraternize w/ the crew on a blanket basis, the answer is "yes". Other than that, none of that other stuff seems automatically "snobbish" to me.

My thoughts exactly. I dunno, let's give the chick a chance, it's not because she's from a wealthy family and lives following certain rules that she's snobbish.

P.S.: I hate social snobbery too. I come from a wealthy family (who'd have guessed, huh? well, my to-be girlfriend would, seeing the stuff I buy for her every week ;) ), and I know how annoying it can be to be around people who think they're better than others just because of their situation when they were born or their education. Still, not everyone's like that, and I say let's give Gwyneth a chance before kicking her skinny butt to hell.

as stated, you really can't base her only on a wealthy background. My aunt and uncle are two of the nicest people Ive ever met, and theyre rolling in dough. keep that in mind....

In Gwyneth's defense, J. Lo was talking smack about her waaaaaaaay before Jenny from the Block met Affleck. To put it simply Lopez pretty much said that Paltrow got to where she is by sleeping with Brad Pitt.

I don't care who you are, you start telling people that I sleep around to get ahead in my career we're not exactly going to be sympatico.

And I'd be pretty hurt if my ex, who I thought I was good friends with after our break-up, ended up dating a woman who has said malicious things about me.

I havent heard about her snobery, but I HAVE heard about her screwing just about every actor she's in a movie with.

If someone can do SNL and act goofy, I cant really see them being a total snob... the 2 dont compute.

I think she probably seems like more of a snob than she actually is. Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck are both pretty laid back easygoing guys, and they were with her for a very long time. Plus I've never read anything about her being a bitch to her fans. If the girl comes from money, that doesn't automatically make her a snob.
