View Full Version : Does a celebrity's personal life affect your opinion of their acting/singing?

I think it's a valid question, and one that must be asked. Does a celebrity's actions in their private life affect your enjoyment of their acting/singing/whatever they do?
For me, it depends on the situation. In the case of R. Kelly, yes. But does all of the bantering about JLo bother me? No, I never really liked her anyway. What do you think?

It depends. If an actor goes on a rampage spouting racist remarks, but then stars in a buddy cop movie where the other actor is part of that race, and they get along, then it'll affect my opinion. Now with the current deal of Zeta-Jones and grandpa Douglas suing over wedding photos, it doesn't mean I'll begin to hate Jones for it or pan her timely performance in Chicago

As long as they're not an open racist or homophobe, (any sort of bigot), I'm likely just going to judge them on their work. I can disagree w/ people's politics (This means YOU, Heston), and still like them onscreen or on stage.
I like umpteen actors and actresses who are with people I don't like (and that's not just women who I think should be with me instead. I can think of two actors I like who are with women who I dislike and I think both guys could do better.)
Ultimately, it's just not my headache to worry about.

IMO, no. I hate some actors as people, but I enjoy their acting.

It depends for me. An stars political views will have no effect how I view what their ability is (ex. Heston, Ah-nuld). But on the other hand is how they treat others or not knowing their place (ex. a star demanding that no one looks them in the eye, treats fans like shit) will definitly make me think less of them.

It depends on the situation. Like the recent news of Pee Wee & Pete Townsend. I wish they fess up & admit! It looks like they are sharing the same brain here. If their noses where like Pinochio they would be a big as a yardstick! And the news I'm hearing about R. Kelly. He's just going downhill & cant get up:rolleyes:

i hope nothing changes my mind on that
but if an actor or actress or director or singer or whoever is an ass, i don't care. people are people. i care about their talent. i probably will never meet them in person, so thats not cool to judge their talent on their personality. they are not doing anything to me, so why should i care?

To be honest and to keep it short, for the most part, a celeb's personal life dows not affect my opinion of their talent at all.

I'd like to say "no", but in fact it's "yes". Eminem pisses me off, so I won't pay eight bucks to see 8 MILE -- the movie's good so I'll watch it when it's on TV, but I ain't paying it. I used to love Jennifer Lopez, and now she's acting like a spoiled bitch, so I try staying away of her CDs and movies -- although I can't really say she's lost her talent, to the contrary. And so on and so forth...but it's subjective. Russell Crowe may be an ass, I get a good vibe off him and love the guy. Catherine Zeta-Jones may be ridiculous with all this wedding pictures story, I still dig her all the same. It doesn't make much sense, I know -- but my liking of someone as an artist does depend on my liking of that person as a person, yeah.

I'm pretty good at seperating a celebrity's personal life from their on-screen life. When it comes to their personal lives, I take everything I hear with a grain of salt. After all, we rarely if ever get the TRUE story about these guys, and I'm sure that many of the things we hear are victims of media spin-doctoring (Michael Jackson's TWO face-lifts being a recent example).
However, ONCE in a while a particular trait will allow for me to appreciate a movie more. Brandon Lee's death allows me to appreciate the haunting beauty of the Crow. Steven Spielberg's religious background lets me recognize the passion he vested in Schindler's List.
Stuff like that.

I'm in the minority, again.
Hell yes a persons actions affect the way I look at them. If I don't like the way somebody acts/treats others offscreen, I won't support them by paying to see their work.
It's the same way with non celebs. If I think the local McDonalds is dirty, or if one of their employees has treated me or somebody I know badly, fuck them. They won't get my money. I know my little personal boycott's won't really affect them. But it's the only power lil ole me has. I'll give my $10 bucks to somebody I think deserves it.

Yes.
Period If I find out someone is a rapist or a child molestor or did some other fucked up act to another human being. My respect for them goes down to zero therefor I cant appreciate whatever they do.

No...because people are only human, we all screw up, we're all flawed people...I know that I wouldn't want to be looked down upon because of something that I chose to do. Of course I'm not talking about murder or rape, but when it comes to having naked pictures of teenagers on your computer, it's not gonna change the fact that a person played guitar in one of the best bands ever or that someone I used to watch as a little kid to be entertained was brilliant.

Fuck, I don't give a flying rat's ass what a celebrity does. If he/she kills babies, they are a bad person yes, but it doesn't affect me at all. If they are a talented actor and are in movies I like, I won't stop liking a movie because some dillhole child rapist is in it. I mean I still like Jeffrey Jones as an actor despite his recent arrest for child porn possession, poor Principal Rooney...he sure ate it this time. Paul Reubens is another example. Sick fuck, but entertaining.
It is my personal opinion that celebrities lives get way too much coverage. Why the shit should we care what spa Gwyneth Paltrow frequents, they obviously over-spend on everything just to live in the glitz and glamour lifestyle. Me? I like how I live, and I don't think my life would change much as a celeb, I would still eat at McDonalds, I'd still shop at Music World and Bootlegger or some clothing store, I'd be just like I am now, except all those stores would be in my house, but I am just like you.
So yeah, if you see Johnny Depp in a coffee shop in soho, who gives a shit? He's just another person. He is nothing like the characters he plays and is probably just like anyone else. So instead of asking him for an autograph, just go about your day without obsessing over some random encounter with a celebrity. You should have much more important things to be doing with your time.

Tough one. I'm a believer in that if someone says that fame hasn't changed them, then they're lying. Once you become famous, everything about you changes, your very life, so unless you can detach yourself completely from reality, then you've very little chance of remaining *insert name here* From The Block.
So, if you were a fan of a star when they were in their very beginning, then it's highly likely that you will have to watch them change, not only creatively, but probably as a public figure aswell. More and more people will become interested in them. And the bigger the star, the bigger the target, and a love/hate divide will start to grow. It's an inevitable part of the business- you cannot please everyone, and you won't. And, unfortunate as it may seem, people will not like you.
As I've mentioned before in the Colin Farrell thread, even if you are a very "serious actor," you are still a celebrity, and you are still in the public eye. Strictly speaking, and in the cold light of day, it seems rather unfair to judge a star's talent on their persona. Take R Kelly for example. Someone may have been a huge fan of his a couple of years ago, now hears that he's in possession of child porn, and takes an instant dislike to his music. A unjustified shift of opinion regarding his music. However, that same person may take a dislike to R Kelly the person, and that is a far more just adaptation.
You've probably all gathered that I'm not Farrell's biggest fan. But I can still appreciate that he can churn out admirable performances. In the same way that I'm a fan of Ralph Fiennes- I really do think he's talented, and think that he seems like a nice guy- but I won't delude myself into thinking that The Avengers was credible.

No, not really. If I go into a J-Lo movie, hating the bitch, but some how she pulls off a stellar performance, then well it's a stellar performance. Some one I hate may make me not want to see the movie, but if he or she is good, then they're good. When you go to a movie to be entertained, not to think of a person's backround.
That's my 2 beans.

definitely not. i don't exactly like russel crowe or val kilmer as poeple, but their talent is extraordinary.

Absolutely not! I do not give a damn about these people's personal lives! Actually, if I never heard anything of the personal lives of all these actor's, actresses, director's, etc... I'd be a very happy man.
When it comes to watching a film, or buying an album... despite what I may have unfortunately have heard about their personal lives, this is not going to play a factor in my decision of whether or not I'm going to watch this or that film, or listen to this or that album.
This is how I feel on the issue....

It depends on the issue. If the celebrity has a rep for being a dick or a bitch, I can overlook that. What do I care? I'll never have to deal with them. But if they're a pedophile, or rapist, or whatnot, that I can't overlook. I actually try to stay away from all the latest news because I want to enjoy an artist's output without having his/her personal shite influence me. Because I know some stuff definitely will influence my opinion.

No. I have really enjoyed Woody Allen's and Roman Polanski's work even though they've done some morally questionable things in their personal lives. I enjoyed Jeepers Creepers even though Victor Salva is an asshole. Everyone says Russell Crowe is a dick in real life but he gives awesome performances. I fucking hate Sean Penn, but he is a very good actor.

i am affected..if the personal life of the person...has and is causing
alot of suffering...i try to go beyond it...but the seed has been planted...not talking about..occasional outburst...or all the more
then human foibles..i am talking about...people who pay their
way thru life...doing what ever the fuck they like...cashing in on
the creative genius ticket....if it stays on a gut level with me...
they have nothing to say that i need to know...if i can`t basically
trust...some humaness in them...to be relative respectful..i cancel
them out.......i have for art`s sake....attempted to go against..
this inner feeling...or peer pressure..my conscience speaks loud.... too many...really wonder
ful artists......on some level...their shit...might seep thru...and
damage some of the fruit of my labour....alot of the bullshit..coming down is just more media coverage...another
attention getter.....it all so bloody tiring...i trust my instincts.
