Clooney Rages Against Fox's "Bare Bottom" Campaign

Solaris star George Clooney is furious that distributors Fox used the fact his naked backside appears in the sci-fi film to stir interest in it. The hunky actor is fiercely proud of the Steven Soderbergh directed film and has slammed the studio for not giving the movie the encouragement he believes it deserves. And the Perfect Storm star is certain the studio bosses will live to regret their actions. He says, "It immediately trivializes what Steven did and even more so what I was doing. And it makes me mad because you don't get the credit for doing what you're doing: which is sticking your neck out. I've had funny experiences in my career - Out Of Sight comes out and it bombs, Three Kings comes out and it doesn't do what they thought, O Brother, Where Art Thou? comes out and doesn't do well. All those films that I really cared about under performed; but as time goes on, people still talk about those films. I said right at the beginning to the guys from Fox, 'Five years from now, you guys are all going to be sitting at a cocktail party, bragging about your involvement in this', because that's the way it was with Out Of Sight at Universal, that's the way it was at Disney with O Brother."

What does everyone think?

He's exactly right. Those films he mentioned are highly thought of, here and elsewhere. I've been loudly predicting a similar eventual positive response for Solaris for a while.

If I put a lot into a film and it was cynically promoted this way, I'd be pissed, too.

Man Clooney has been an angry man lately, but he has some real reasons though every now and then. On this one he has a real reason, for FOX to basically just shit on his film is wrong. If they would have just encouraged it a little more a lot could have changed.

On Fox's defence, I doubt that they could've found another studio that would've actually given the guys the money needed to do this type of film. It's not the kind of movie that usually would generate a lot of box-office, and it was pretty ballsy of Fox to do it.

However, I think Clooney is right in most of the things he says, about the promotion, but especially about how Solaris will be talked about five years from now much more than today.

funnily enough, until i came to this site, all i had heard about solaris was that u saw clooneys arse in it. which says a hell of a lot.

i have to rely on word of mouth that its an interesting sci fi film. it opens here on friday.

my review will contain little or no mention of clooneys cheeks.

i reckon its gonna be a great film, it looks right down my alley.

hes right though, fox have gone about the whole thing in the wrong way.

damnit, credit us with intelligence and not an urge to see a film just cause someone bares a bit of bottom.

sheesh.

It's a shame that FOX is playing up the nude scene in order to "dumb down" the flick for DUMMIES who need exploitation in order to get their MINDS involved in an intelligent movie.

I really like the bloke. He takes it on the chin when his work is crap (I remember him saying he "single-handedly killed the Batman franchise"), but he sticks up for the work he's proud of. Fox should show him some loyalty (granted he got millions of pounds worth - but that's not the kind of loyalty I'm talking about)

The man can get as mad as he wants. What with all of the crap going on. I don't blame him. Solaris was an excellent movie. I think Clooney is finally speaking out on issues.

Although I'm getting a bit sick of him being in the news all the time lately, I do like that he's striking back because of the lackluster promotional campaign set forth by FOX. He's right too, Solaris will probably be a cult hit in the next few years with them bragging about their investment
