ok this movie has always been a fav of mines and probably the best horror movie to still scare the shit outta me till this day

i was always curious about this though.......

in the dream sequence that the young priest had, after his mother past away ,,,,, what did the dream mean when he envisioned his mother coming out of a train station, then he's running to her, and a chain falling from out the sky?

.... when reagan was playing around with the oji board, was she possessed by the spirit she summoned or was it the devil himself?....

another question is..... when they spoke of burke being pushed out regan's window and breaking his neck all you could do is assume that regan was the one that did it... but why wasn't their any footage of it?......

somebody please answer my questions

1. Dunno :)
2. I think it was the spirit she summoned. The devil himself doesnt appear in the film
3. There doesnt need to be any footage of him coming out the window really, less is more.

1) I believe that the vision is of Damien's mother in hell and the chain falling symbolises Damien losing his faith.

2) She was possessed by the demon that Father Merrin had previously exorcised (can't remember the demon's name).

3) Yep, sometimes less is more ;)

Nice interpretation of the first question - that's exactly the way that I explained it to a roommate of mine the first time we watched the new DVD.

I agree with the "less is more" theory for the third question, but to add to it, we are pretty much left in no doubt that it was Regan who killed Burke, especially when she imitates him by twisting her head around and saying in his voice "do you know what she did, your cunting daughter?".

Took me a while to realise that was what the head-spinning meant, heh.

Damien Karras did, but Burke was killed by Reagan - it is implied that his head was twisted completely around before he fell down the stairs, as someone mentioned that the odds of that injury occurring are slim.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I think Damien jumped out of the window not in an attempt to kill the demon (as you can't kill demons, only banish them), but it was his only choice as he was going to kill Reagan when the demon went into him. He regained control for a split second which enabled him to sacrifice himself to save her.

I'll address the first question, which is to pretty much agree with the aforementioned post.

Karas is filled with guilt that he cannot be close to his mother who is old and ill. When she dies, he is absolutely consumed with guilt.

In the dream sequence, Karas is standing far away from the entrance to the subway where he sees his mother coming out. He calls to her and begins to run to her as she begins to cry out to him. She appears to be very sad and without hope.

No matter how fast or hard he runs, he cannot get close to her before she descends down the subway stairs (the allegory for hell here). It parallels his real life situation where he was too far from home to save her before she fell ill and died.

I think the vision of the running dog and the falling medallion are signs of what is to come. We know from the beginning sequence when Marrin confronts the demon statue that the nearby dogs go wild, then Merrin finds the same medallion/coin on his dig in Ninevah. Karas could not possibly know about either one of these things, yet he sees them in his dream.
