This from Coming Soon (www.comingsoon.net) :
"Paramount Pictures has tapped Narc director Joe Carnahan to helm Mission: Impossible 3 following the withdrawal of David Fincher. Variety reports the studio is in negotiations with Carnahan over the third installment, to be produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner via their Paramount-based C/W Prods. with Cruise portraying agent Ethan Hunt.
Fincher had been attached to "M:I-3" since early last year but recently committed to direct The Lords of Dogtown, centering on the surf and skate culture that took root in the 1970s, for Sony.
Robert Towne remains attached to pen the script for the third film. Dean Georgaris, who penned the "Lara Croft" sequel, Paycheck and The Manchurian Candidate, also has been mentioned as a likely scripting candidate recently."
I think it's a shame that Fincher won't be doing it after all, but perhaps he'll deliver some cool original films instead. Carnahan sounds like a good choice to me, I haven't actually seen either of his films, but Narc has been getting some rather favorable reviews...What do you guys think?
