Ya know.....I actually liked it. It got right to the point! The only thing I didn't like about it was Newt getting killed.

Uuummmmmm... I don't like seeing children getting killed either, but Hicks was great. How could that not bother you? I dislike the killing off of both Hicks and Newt because when you re-watch Aliens it kind of takes away just a little bit, Alien 3 was Fincher's debut (and his poorest) film so I will forgive him though. Really its not a bad movie, I just think it as a slam on Aliens how it started.

Aliens 10/10
Alien 8/10
Alien 3 7/10
Alien: Resurrection 6/10

How did I know you'd react so negatively toward the death of NEWT and HICKS, Stevereno?

--

ALIEN 3 seems to be where Ripley gets tired of this alien business, and the series hits a low mark, content wise.
They kill off Charles Dance, which was soooo not right. I liked him. They kill Bishop (Lance's cameo is way bad for a series that had Brad Dourif in the fourth, and great actors in ALIEN and ALIENS).

BUT.....
Ripley goes out with a whimper, rather than a huge bang that could have resulted. Ripley accepts her fate, and knows what to do. Thje best part is that Weaver knows the ins and outs of Ripley. THERE WERE NO FALSE STEPS REGARDING RIPLEY.

IMO I think this was the poorest Alien flim I've seen. And I didn't like it when Newt died also http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

This one is no were near as bad as Resurrection. It is not as good as the first two but I found it to be a very fitting ending to the Ripley's story.
Like Arrow said in his review it is a depressing film, but if you get past Newt and Hicks' death it is a pretty good film. The best thing about this film is Fincher's directing. And Weaver was great in this film, along with Dutton and Dance.

Where the first one was a sci-fi horror and the second was a sci-fi action flick, this was a drama one. In this one Ripley fights her inner demons concerning what the alien has done more than the alien itself and must sacrifice her own life to rid the universe of it.

Just re-watched this one along with part II and well, its not bad. Not bad at all, its just different. And a little sad yes, but thats what makes it stand apart from all the other Alien films.

Finchers style was there, it was present all through out the movie, slick as ever. Everythig looks dirty and old and wet, But I did notice one thing Fincher still hadnt aquired yet as a director and that IS a Fincher landmark today and thats putting the camera in really hard places, like for example what he did in Fight Club and The Panic Room. He can only achive his incredible shots today only because CGI makes it possible. Back in the Alien III days computer graphics were not so advanced as today. Though we do get to see some computer effects towards the end when they throw all that copper on the alien, and he turns all metallic.

Once you get passed the shock of Newt, Bishop and Hicks dieying, you gotta admit its a really well made film with excellent performances. Hey in real life people die, why not in movies? And their deaths are completely justified...Hey the ship crash landed after all! I understand that they were very well liked characters, but then again so is everyone when they die (unless youre Hannibal lecter or something and even then somebody will shed a tear or two Im sure!)

Bottom line is, this movies just different, and that doesnt make it bad. Basically, every Alien movie thats come out is a whole different type of film. And this was the case with Alien III.

Had Alien 3 been the 1st Alien film, I would've liked it better because its downbeat tone would've shocked us(a la Night of the Living Dead).
Instead, the film's downbeat tone pis$ed many off(myself included) because it made the events of the 1st 2 films seem completely pointless.
However, the filmmakers do deserve credit for trying to make a different kind of picture(IMHO, it just didn't work in this case). Happily, David Fincher has gone on to better things(Se7en, Panic Room).

I happened to see Alien 3 when it opened in the summer of 92,and when I emerged from the theater I was VERY dissapointed,as were the crowd that had paid to see it.

I rented it and I actually went back and thought ,You cannot top Aliens, but At Least Alien 3 was not a rehash of the 2nd one like everyone wanted. There are some good characters, and the acting is decent,Charles Dutton is great as is Charles Dance.I thought the end was a good way to finish the series.Ripley has never been better.

Alien 3 does not deserve the rap it gets, and in the following years since its release it has become more accepted by critics and fans.
And certainly was a hell of alot better than #4.

Alien 3-8.5/10

Amen to that brother! Part fours stupid one liners and jokes took the seriousness and horror right out of that film. The alien movies are not about characters saying stupid oneliners like that big dumb guy character in part four. They are about horror and suspense, drama and action. I think part three did very good in this, its just like many films that are different, often times it takes a while for people to get them.

Yeah the aliens in resurrection looked good and we got some cool underwater aliens and the first cgi aliens, but the "feel" of the movie just wasnt the same. Ah hell heres to part 5 directed by Ridley Scott. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Okay, after watching this movie for the first time on DVD, I feel the need to bump this topic and continue defending the film. I agree that Alien 3 has its share of problems, but I loved the style and atmosphere that David Fincher gave it. I wish to make a confession: I think that this is actually a better film than Rosemary's Baby or Night of the Living Dead, even Halloween in some respects.

I really enjoyed it, good acting, a smart script and excellent alien cgi, possibly on a par with the two prequels imho
