View Full Version : Next Weekends B.O. Predictions (Bringing Down The House, Tears Of The Sun)
EST. THEATER COUNT:
Tears of the Sun - 2,800+
Bringing Down the House - 2,700
The Safety of Objects - 35
Irreversible - 7 (LA, NYC)
BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE - 19 Million
The closer and closer this one gets to being released, the more $$$ I think it will make. At first I started out thinking maybe 13 Million, but now it has raised quite a bit. I tried to catch the sneak preview last weekend, and I was there more than 30 minutes early and while I was standing in line waiting, they announced it was SOLD OUT. With as fast as it sold out and as many people I've talked to that want to see it, I think it will do really well. I can definitely see this being a big crowd pleasing hit.
TEARS OF THE SUN - 15 Million
I wasn't expecting much from this one at all box office wise. But after seeing a lot of recent TV spots, I've changed my mind. I've really been impressed with the recent TV spots, and it actually looks like it should be able to pull in a good opening weekend.

Ideal's Very Early Predix:
Bringing Down The House
Last weekend's sneak previews were virtual sell-outs, early reviews are very positive, the trailers are hilarious, its got a PG13 rating and is being released quite widely. Add the fact that the film stars two comic greats Steve Martin and Eugene Levy, along with Oscar nominee Queen Latifah and also that the film appeals to all ethnicities and it all equals a recipe for a big success.
I think that Bringing Down The House is going to do exceptionally well. I predict an opening of between $20 and $24 million dollars and small declines in the weeks to come.
Tears Of The Sun
$13-$16 million opening. Nuff said.

Very Early Predictions
Bringing Down The House - I think this is going to be a weekend like when "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" beat "Shanghai Knights." The sneak previews for this movie were sold out everywhere, early reviews are great, word of mouth has been positive, and the trailer is funny. Add Steve Martin, Eugene Levy and current woman-of-the-minute Queen Latifah to the mix and I think we've got a hit on our hands. I predict a $28 million opening and a finish very close (maybe over) to $100 million.
Tears Of The Sun - This will do very well, showing a strong second place showing. Sony has been promoting the hell out of this flick, as is Bruce Willis, with his recent stint as guest host on the David Letterman show. This will probably do good business because of the guys, and will make about $20 million opening weekend for a $75 million finish.

"Bringing Down The House"-
This movie, in my opinion, smells like a blockbuster that comes out of nowhere, like the suprise 2000 hit "Meet The Parents". Steve Martin has and will always create immense interest. His long filmography proves he is one funny man, and his name on the marquee will generate buzz. I would usually say Queen Latifah would not make much of a difference box office-wise, but after her turn in "Chicago", plus her Oscar nomination for said film, has her in the public eye, and will also help generate buzz. Plus, this film's trailers and TV spots are hilarious with tons of gags from one-liners("What's a rack?", "It's a country!") to slapstick(Martin's character being pushed into a pool). With that big theatre count, and the previously mentioned factors, this comedy should be able to pull in 30 million dollars this weekend.
"Tears of the Sun"-
This movie should also do very well! Action fans who are turned off by the rap-factor of this week's actioner "Cradle 2 The Grave" will warmly welcome a military film starring an action fan favorite, Bruce Willis("Die Hard"). Yes his last war-themed film, 2002's "Hart's War", was a big-budget bomb for MGM, but that film's marketing made it look dull, while this movie's trailers and TV spots are action-packed with enough machine guns, explosions, and Bruce running in slow motion to whet any true action fan's appetite. I for one am planning to go see it on Friday night. At the end of the day, I think this action thriller should bring in a sweet 21 million dollars over the weeked.

If Bringing Down the House makes $30 million this weekend, I'll show up in this thread and proclaim you a God.

I don't see "Bringing Down the House" making anywhere close to the amounts mentioned above. I say it'll open with about $17 million, but I think it might be edged out by "Tears of the Sun" by a couple million dollars.

If Bringing Down the House makes $30 million dollars this weekend, then I'm Roger Ebert. It won't pull $30mil, it just doesn't have the heavy marketing boost. $20 million sounds more realistic.
Tears of the Sun-$15 million.
Actually guys, 30 Million is definitely a possibility. The ads are everywhere, the public interest is high, it looks hilarious, it's PG-13, and it will appeal to different ethnic groups. I really wouldn't be surprised if it did happen to make around 30 Million this next weekend. It has the makings of a big hit.

I've seen the preview in theatres like 15 times, and the TV spot: well, I can recite them word-for-word.

No offense, but have you been living under a rock!? I can't even turn on the TV without seeing around two TV spots per commercial break. Seriously, they are played non-stop. You must not watch any TV.

I never predict the amount of money will make as that is too hard but here is my predictions of the top 5:
1. Bringing Down the House
2. Tears of the Sun
3. Old School
4. Daredevil
5. Cradle 2 the Grave
I think Tears of the Sun will open well but I think it will ultimately do so-so at best because another military thriller, The Hunted, opens next week and I think that will do better and take away alot of the audiences from Tears of the Sun. Plus although both look good, The Hunted looks slightly better to me.

I've seen four total, and I watch a lot of TV.

Hmm, most of the time when you watch the TV is it turned on? Nah, seriously though, I just can't see how you could miss them, they are constantly on. Especially if you say you watch a lot of TV, I just can't imagine you seeing so few of them. Do you usually get up during commercials or do you sit and watch them!? Or do you mostly watch channels that don't have commercials!?

Bringing Down The House should easily pull $40 million. Something keeps telling me $46 million, so that's my guess (I don't do this often so forgive my crudity.) Like many others, I've seen the preview in the theaters at least 10 times, and since we don't have cable I thought I could surprise my sister (who never goes to the movies) with the "What's a rack?" joke; it ended up being that she already knew the joke too..somehow.
"Tears of the Sun" looks like it might tip $10 million but barely. Maybe $11 million. The trailer gives away the entire film just with the line "Let's get these people on the helicopter" so...

Did you just say $46 million? As in higher than Daredevil's opening?
Here's a tip: mental institutions are there for a reason.
As for TV, the shows I always watch are: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Enterprise, Fear Factor, WWE Raw, WWE SmackDown!, and Friends.
Fairly popular shows.
