It is not his best, that would be The Elephant Man, but then again, I haven't had the chance to see Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, or Mulholland Dr. HOWEVER, I absolutely LOVE Lost Highway, one of the most challenging of any movie I've seen.

This is how I'd rank the Lynch films I've seen:
1. Mulholland Drive (9/10)
2. Blue Velvet (8/10)
3. The Elephant Man (8/10)
4. Wild at Heart (7/10)
I've also seen Lost Highway, which is an enigima, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in an extremely trippy, confusing piece of film that gave me a headache for weeks. I will never understand anything about that film, therefore, it's impossible for me to grade it.

1.) Mulholland Drive -9/10
2.) Twin Peaks Pilot -9/10
3.) The Straight Story -8/10
4.) The Elephant Man -8/10
5.) Eraserhead -7/10
I admire Lost Highway, it's well-made and the story is fucking brilliant (I suggest any fan of Lynch or the film read Slavoj Zizek's "The Art of The Ridiculous Sublime" a great essay on the film) but I could never rate the film, thus I do not rank it.

I'm not following. You said it was a well-made film with a great storyline, yet you can't give it a rating? From what you said it sounds like an 8/10. A seven, minimum.

Well I admire the film and I "get" it, but that's not to say I like it, which isn't to say I don't like it either, I just don't know whether I do or not, so I don't rate or rank it.

Hey Quent, you haven't seen The Elephant Man?
Jon Cocco

You people can't judge which was his best film. Most of his movies must be seen several times each to understand and pick up on hidden symbolism and details. However, read my short explanation-like reviews below.
Twin Peeks was extremely confusing and fucked up. I just did not enjoy the total lack of interesting characters, plot, and logic. This movie totally disgusted me in that it just felt so trashy, illogical, and stupid... like the rediculous ending. I know it should be fucked up, but at least make it cool like art and an experience!
Lost Highway had great cinematography, directing, and a good soundtrack to boot, but the ending was totally out there.
Muholland Drive was possibly his greatest film... until the totally fucked up, confusing ending. The end may have been excellent also, but I hope what I read is correct because I did not understand it until I looked it up. See below these films for my reply about the ending...
Wild At Heart was pretty good, but the beginning was fucking awesome. This was David Lynch's twisted version of Wizard Of Oz.
The Elephant Man was his most normal movie. This was NOT Lynch's style at all.
Eraserhead was just too boring, slow, and under written for me to enjoy. I did not know it was in Black and White until I saw it.
Dune was once again different and more mainstream from his style. I found this movie extremely drawn-out, boring, and annoying. Too over written and not enough explained to make a younger audience understand. I am an adult, but parts of this movie were very hard to understand.
Blue Velvit I saw once and I will never forget it. Dark, interesting, bizarre characters, plot, and one hell of a suspenseful, kick ass ending.
DOes anyone know when or what his next movie will be???
*SPOILER* READ BELOW ONLY IF YOU SAW MULHOLLAND DRIVE.
Everything seemed logical and cool, unlike most Lynch films... until Naomi Watts opened up the box... nothing made sense, everything was the opposite. I read that the ending was her reality, and the first two-thirds was a dream, so she woke up and realized her life was the same disaster it had always been. Was the symbolism of the guy laughing at the end the devil??? And was this indeed a movie that bashes Hollywood and shows how fake it is? Also, what was the point of the resturant shop with the two guy talking? I never got that, as it seemed unfinished in conclusion. Am I right about the ending? I just want to be sure because I loved this movie.

I've seen it, I've seen all of Lynch's films except Fire Walk With Me and all of Dune. Actually I am taking a college film class right now after school on "Three American Directors", the first of which was David Lynch (the others are Jarmusch, who we're now on, and Coen), Lynch on Lynch was very interesting and dissecting some of his films was a kick. But while I've seen almost all of his films (including some interesting shorts) and liked most, Elephant Man and the rest didn't make my top 5. I've seen it more than once and I was very underwhelmed by that movie actually.

Christ, you're abso-fucking-lutely spot on about that.
I read your Mulholland Drive synopsis, and evidently we should all bow down to your superior knowledge.
Your analytical skills are faultless…and your knowledge of the great man obviously surpasses our Ill-informed opinions.
I mean...who are WE to judge!?
PS: There is nothing more infuriating than condescension...

What the hell are you talking about? I posted at the bottem of my last post, asking if this was true or not about the ending, because I read it off Yahoo Movies. I did not spread my accomplishment as if I knew, which I still have no confirmation. The post on YAHOO MOVIES seemed like someones interpretation of the movie. Then again, I soon realized that Mulholland Drive might be a puzzle that he just solved... if it is indeed was meant to be a puzzle. Lost Highway was very confusing, and I am not sure if it was fucked up without purpose, or it was a puzzle? I never expected an actual logical explanation with Mulholland Drive, after seeing Lost Highway, until I read someones theory, or if it is true they probably took it off David Lynch's site. I wanted to know if it this is correct, because it seems to make senes.
I mean...who are WE to judge!?
Once again, that was not the point. People can share their opinion and have their favorites, but I noticed some people say Mulhalland Drive was his best, or stuff similar to that and other films ... along those lines. There is no exact answer to this. I was commenting on the people who THINK they possibly think they know that there is an actual best David Lynch film. I explained that you can't judge it as if ONE film from him is the BEST, just because it is your favorite.
There is nothing more infuriating than condescension...
Once again, I am not coming down on anyone or everyone. My point maybe was not clear enough above. Fact and opinion are two totally different things. Some posters say their favorite movie, while others post one and say its the best. My intentions were never to infuriate others. I only speak fact when I have evidence to back it up. You obviously missed what I meant, and took it as an insult.

Eraserhead 9/10
The Elephant Man 9/10
Dune n/a
Blue Velvet n/a
Twin Peaks 142/10
The Straight Story n/a
Wild At Heart 8/10
Mulholland Drive 743/10
Lost Highway 10/10
I think it's a tie between Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive which both are brilliant. Then probably Blue Velvet.
But can someone here tell me where you actually FIND his movies?! All I've been able to find are the three above, Elephant Man, Dune. I can't find anything else and It really pisses me off. Expecially eraserhead. Did you just find them in some rental store or did you have to settle for bootlegs?
