I just watched the Shining(Tv mini-series, 1997) last night for the first time. I have never read the book. I was wondering if the mini-series follows the book. I know Stephen King was not happy with Stanley Kubricks version, but in my opinion, if the mini-series was what King originally intended The Shining to be, then it's no wonder why Kubrick changed it. The new Shining with the manufactured Hollywood Happy ending was total bullshit. There was absolutely no suspense, and the moving Bush creatures looked ridiculous. No wonder Kubrick changed the story. He had to polish it so his film wouldn't turn into a piece of shit like the New one is. And whats up with replacing the ax with a croquet mallet? How menacing!

Actually, The TV version was WAAAAY closer to the book than Kubrick's crap of a movie was (IMO!). And if I remember correctly, someone told me in the book it was corquet mallet Torrence used and not an axe.
Either way, I personally prefer the TV version because never have I liked Kubrick's version, not even before I found out it was totally changed.

dude the croquet mallet was kewl. have u ever been nailed with a croquet mallet? i havent either but my friend has some in his garage and those things are solid. the ones in the miniseries were bigger too. the animals were in the book too and i liked them in the movie. the book was a classic, kubricks version is damn good and the miniseries is a little better then the movie. the ending rocked man! the rebuilding thing at the end was creepy! but hey its ur opinion.

***SPOILERS FOR THE SHINING(BOOK AND MINISERIES)***
I just read the book, and it didn't have the graduation thing or anything like that. It had Wendy, Danny and Halloran talking about things. And there was no hint that Overlook would be rebuilt.

no one said the mini series is a dead on, word for word remake. its just closer to the book then the original.

I just wanted to clarify that people here don't think that the ending of the miniseries is dead on with the book. That's all.
