OK, in "The Shining" there is a shot in the bar scene where we see some guy in a bear suit kneeling down and another guy giving us a funny look. I'm reading the book now, and hopefully that might help, but does anybody have and idea what that was supposed to be? I doubt it was in the book though, Kubrick changed a lot about "The Shining". Pissed Stephen King off quite a bit.

The ghost in the dog suit is a major ghost in the book so I won't spoil it for you. Kubrik being the incompetant hack that he was put it in there without giving the character anything to do because, well, he was incompetant as a film maker. The dog suit guy was in the great television version that King wrote. You know, the one that actually was about the shining and not about J. Nicholson making jokes while looking directly at the camera like he was Fred Kruger or something. The man made one good movie, A Clockwork Orange, and that is because he actually kept to the book so there was a competant story being told. I'm betting he had no control over that movie and just did what he was told to do. That's the only way he could have made a decent film. Sorry, I just have to rant about this hack. Anyway, the dog ghost is in the book. He's creepy as hell.

I just realized you said bear costume, not dog. If it was at the bar scene, it was just one of the ghosts partying down, but your discription sounds a lot like the scene with the dog costumed man. He is leaning over a guy's crotch and looks up and that is all he is in the movie.

I agree that Kubrick was incompetent. He even excluded the last chapter of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE from the movie, though it was still a good film. The Shining was boring and the remake of it I enjoyed a lot more. I'm still trying to figure out why people thought Kubrick was so great a filmmaker. Certainly doesn't have anything to do with the fact he is dead, is it?

Incompetent or not he still made some great movies in my opinion and that shining television movie was crap! I thought it was awful. I like the book but the acting in that tv version really eats shit! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Thanks iZombie. Oh, and by the way: Stanley Kubrick is brilliant and it's not because people feel bad that he is dead. I'll list some of the great movies he made:
- A CLOCKWORD ORANGE
- THE SHINING (yes, it was a great movie)
- DR STRANGELOVE OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB
- 2001: ASO
- FULL METAL JACKET
I obviously don't have to say anything about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, everybody knows it's great, THE SHINING is considered by many sources one of the best horror movies of all time, DR STRANGELOVE was a brilliant black comedy, 2001 I don't have to say anything about: it's brilliant, and FULL METAL JACKET is considered one of the best war movies of all time.
With such a wide variety of genres, everything from sci-fi to comedy, Stanley Kubrick had changed movies forever. That's why several of his movies are on the AFI's 100 Years 100 movies.

I forgot he made FMJ...THAT was a good movie, 2001 is open to interpretation...And A CLOCKWORK ORANGE I have openly admitted was a good film. But let's look at, oh, EYES WIDE SHUT, and he was supposed to do A.I. before he died, either way I can't see THAT movie being anygood. Even the worse artist can paint a masterpiece.

how could anyone say the acting in the miniseries was bad? its steven freakin webber! he was the only replacement to j. nicholson and he freakin tore the house (or hotel) down!. the actin was damn good. except for courtland mead. this kid isnt cute anymore folks. stick some braces on him, stop cuttin his hair at home and bring him to a real barber and then well talk. the mini series and the original are both very kewl. the original is an interpretation on king's story and the new one IS king's story.

I suppose the acting quality of the mini-series is arguable. For me it ranged from decent to blah. But realistically, is it REALLY any worse than what we see in the original?
Rebecca DeMornay isn't NEARLY as irritating as Shelly DuVall. And Courtland Mead at least put a little 'oomph' into his character, which is a helluva lot more than I can say for Danny Lloyd. While I love Jack Nicholsen's performance, I think Webber had a better handle of the Jack Torrence character than Nicholsen did. However, there is only ONE Dick Halloran and that's the late great Hong Kong Phooey himself, SCATMAN CROTHERS!
I like both films, but I like them for different reasons, as they were made with different motivations in mind.

That's probably the most intelligent response on this board. Thanx Razor!
