Great, great flick, that unfortunately didn't do too well at the box office upon it's initial release. But the critics loved it, as did I. I believe I'd rank it #2 out of the entire series, right behind the original, and just ahead of Dream Warriors.

The first one was the best. New Nightmare is easily second. Wes Craven is the man!!!

I agree totally, this was a highly underated film. I guess I just echo everyone else and feel that The Original Nightmare and the New Nightmare were the best. Mainly because Freddy is the dark, creepy guy he should be.

I was a fan of the whole series tho, they got silly, but somehow always managed to stay interesting.

Part 2 I feel is highly underated as well, I rank that just below Original and New.

New Nightmare gracefully surpasses the original. It marked a crucial return to Freddy's macabre roots. After Freddy's Dead, you'd think that it would be impossible to make Mr. Krueger frightening again, but Craven stepped back into the series and saw to it that his star villain wouldn't be resurrected by dog urine, wouldn't wear sunglasses, and wouldn't ride a skateboard ever again. The film's only downfall is the clumsy finish. Freddy is just goofing around. He could have easily taken Heather and Dylan out, but everything was relegated to a silly wrestling match.

WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE (1994) Directed by (you guessed it!) Wes Craven. Ten years after the success of the original “Elm Street”, this film-within-a-film (which predates Craven's similar-themed “Scream 3”) centers around the cast and crew of the popular horror series, who are murdered one-by-one by an evil entity. John Saxon and Heather Langenkamp (stars of the first and third “Elm Street” installments), portray themselves and their “Elm Street” characters, while the story focuses on Heather's FX artist hubby (David Newsom) and their young son (Miko Hughes of “Pet Sematary” fame), who are targeted by the real-life Freddy specter. Robert Englund portrays himself and his Krueger persona, and Craven appears in a cameo. Not as confusing as it sounds. One of the more original horror films from the early 90's. My grade for this “New Nightmare”: B+

I LOVE this movie. I think the original Nightmare is the best, followed by Dream Warriors and then this one. I LOVE thos three films so much. I also LOVE Heather Langenkamp and her performance in this film is top notch! One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Heather shoves the snake in Freddy's eye and says, "FUCK YOU!" Then WHACK!!! That scene always makes me want to jump up and cheer!

My other favorite scene is right after the Nosferatu tribute and Heather finds herself in the old pajamas and watched John Saxon drive off just before turning to see the original house with that great classic theme blaring. I LOVE it!

Another scene is the short fight Heather and Freddy have in her bedroom when he looks down at her and whispers, "Nancy..." I just love this film and the series to death. Not to mention my girl, Heather!

Wes Craven is my favorite horror filmmaker. He is without a doubt the best. You can always count on him to throw you one hell of a story, and here he accomplishes just that. This has to easily be one of the most original horror films ever.

As for Freddy, I think he looks great. I just think that the sweater is a bit weird, and the leather pants need to go. As for the claw I think it's cool, but yes I would perfer the original glove, and the trenchcoat I think is an AWESOME addition to Freddy's wardrobe.

GREAT writing, directing, acting, and suspense makes this a fantastic film. I love the theatrical trailer how they try to make it look like it's a documentary. You go Wes!!!

Grade: A

Despite the silly ending, and a few other bad scenes, this is one of Craven's best movies. I saw this when it came out in 94', and I loved the hell out of it. The suspense was good, as was the acting, and the writing. One of the best scenes was during the funeral, where nancy falls asleep and ecounters Freddy in the coffin. Great stuff!!! I'd give this movie a strong B, because it's mostly really entertaining and well done. The scene at the park/playground was fantastic!!!

Wes Craven's New Nightmare kicked ass, best one out of the whole series, including the first

Wes Craven's New Nightmare is easily, in my opinion, the second best of the series. The one thing that really annoys me is the music at the end credits. That's cheesy as hell, even worse than the Friday The 13th Disco Theme!

Other than that, ****/****.

This flm had potential, but it never went anywere with it, it started creepy, Freddy in the real world but what the hell happened toward the end?!? It turned into a silly screaming fest. No questions that the first half asked were answerd, if Freddy is real, then they better have a damn good explanation, but alas non was given. I found it rather boring and the end was imbarrasing to the anti sell out Freddy we were lead to believe in the begining...

Final Grade C

Great movie. Very creative and original and not like any of the other movies in the series. FREDDY was a lot darker than he had been in a long while so that was cool. I give it high marks for trying something new. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Loved the new tench coat look , he was darker so that was also a plus. But I wish it didn't talk about how all of the past entries of the series were just ... well , movies. Kinda dumb if you ask me , but hey some people probably like this idea.

Probably one of the smartest horror films I've ever seen. It manages to suceed in several areas. It builds an unbearable amount of tension, reestablishes Freddy as a serious bad-ass and twists reality like a corkscrew 'til fiction and real life merge into one. My grade would defintely fall in the A range.

This was a great entry to the series...easily 2nd best..and it wasnt a JOKE fest like the others...

Best to Worst; IMHO

1. Nightmare on Elm St 1
2. A New Nightmare
3. Dream Warriors
4. nightmare 4
5. Freddys Dead

It's a great bookend to the 'Nightmare' series. Original and daring in the way it departs from the tone of the other parts.

One gripe: The kid who plays Heather's son is completely annoying.

This is the best sequel to the NOES series and strikes new ground in the series. Freddy seems actually evil in this and not like a joker.

Kenny's Dead!!

the kid really is annoying. this is the best nightmare sequel up til like the last 15 minutes when freddy starts actin like an ass again. also the way they "kill" freddy is kinda stupid too. the ending hurt this movie alot but overall its still the 3rd best entry, behind 1 and 3.

I agree.

Obviously the 1st one was the best and the 3rd one was the 2nd best but to me New Nightmare to me seemed the worst of the lot.
Liked the idea and thought it had a lot of potential.

Nancy was off her nut the whole fucking movie, the kid should have been hung from a tree flayed, gutted and garotted, and Wes baby, you caint act, so stop trying.
Freddy did look quite scary, I'll give it that. Funny how the only Freddy film set in "the real world" was the most unrealistic of the lot.

I completely disagree... I thought that the kid was really great and came off seeming pretty creepy at times.

I also think that this is the best out of the series. Even better than the first.

Yeah, Miko Hughes has credible acting chops. I thought he handled himself rather well in New Nightmare, and especially in Pet Sematary. I never thought that I'd be creeped out by a toddler!

This was the first Nightmare I saw (6th grade I believe) and while I was not a slasher fan at the time, New Nightmare had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The ending was weaker yes but the film has an impact and plays on quite a few realistic problems with cinema and children and such.

New Nightmare is my favorite sequel and only a small notch below the original.
