I just watched this the other day and I thought it sucked. It had some cool gory moments but the movie was boring. It made absolutely no sense to me like was the blind women really dead or what? Why was her house trashed when the doctor went into her house, but then they show her playing the piano and the house looks normal? And wouldn't the cops investigate the death of plumber Joe when they find him dead with his eye gauged out? I would like to hear other peoples opinion about this movie and could tell what was going on.

THE BEYOND was terrific.

The blind woman was dead, but she returned to Liza because Liza held the key to the gate of Hell.

As for Joe's death, and non-investigation, THIS IS A FULCI MOVIE! Meaning that the plot really isn't important, and the atmosphere is more important. Please note I'm not trying to be aggresive.
But the blind girl is dead.

Both leads are admirable, and David Warbeck is great. Like all Fulci, plot is les important, and it is not boring if you soak in the atmosphere, and score.
The score is fab, and it sets the scene, proving to be poignant in the ending.

9/10 THE BEYOND is not for everyone, but I certainly loved it.

thats fulci for ya man, thats what all his movies are like. but this one seems to be his least coherent one in my opinion. i liked it, but not as much as zombie or house by the cemetary. i still give it an 8/10 though.

and i agree, the atmosphere is what fulci is all about. just sit back and let its eeriness take you over. thats the key to enjoying fulci's movies. but he's definetly not for everyone, i love his work but he's without a doubt not for everyone.

That movie is a state of mind, you can't just wonder why this and why that. A million gorehounds can't be wrong. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/tongue.gif

The best Lucio Fulci flick in my opinion, I hated House By The Cemetery, I think it was because the cover made it look like a slasher.

Hey thanks guys. I was half asleep when I watched it so I didn't quite get everything. And what was the key? I haven't had time to watch it again while I was awake(and not drunk) to figure it out.

Ok, what makes all italian horror any good is that it doesn't make a lick of sense. What makes it very good is the murder and suspense scenes are all good. What made Fulci great is three things: 1.gore 2.gore 3.and did I mention his stuff is gory.

The Beyond is Fulci's masterpiece. It has suspense,a warped Ghost story,Gory ass murders, and the late great David Warbeck blastin corpses. Can anyone believe that Fulci made the Beyond for only 500,000?

Bulletproof,

THE BEYOND is genius, because it disguises its low-budget well! The death of Emily was well-done, and they managed to get in wicked SFX for the formaldehyde scene and the other deaths.

David Warbeck was great as the doctor. He was the Sam Neill of his day.

The ending is heartbreaking when you consider how doomed Liza was. Fab Frizzi did a fab score for this film, too.

Have u noticed the homage to Argento ??
The blind - woman being killed by her dog ( it was in Suspiria but it was a man )
I own it and it is truely a masterpiece, good photography, outstanding FX, great music and good acting.
The doctor was obviously very stupid because he knows that the zombies are killable if they are shot in the head and despite that he shoots everywhere but in the head !!!
The end is very very weird and I don't understand it ( slow - motion, like that !!)

Liza and the doctor are too late to stop the portal from opening, thus condmening themselves to Hell, as done by that painter who was killed in the beginning.
I loved that ending.
As for the Argento nod, Fulci had a rain of maggots in GATES OF HELL too, from SUSPIRIA also.

I too was kinda bumed at That the Dead came back for her.And at the end when are heroes see their fate, after the fight they put up.

I don't know about you LadyS,but the spider scene makes my flesh crawl everytime I see it.
The music was pretty good indeed!

Yeah,Bulletproof, the spider scene was gruesome, esp. when they pulled out the guys tongue. The (bobbing) tarantula's, as scary and unnerving as they are, cannot beat the fact that the heroes did not succeed. Even though we wanted them to.

Unlike HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY,where Cat McColl is like "Oh, I hear strange rumblings from the floor. Maybe I should go put on some tea."
And that little boy Bob. I would have pulled a Warbeck on him and shot him in the head, leaving a gaping hole.

I thought the formaldehyde death would be more painful than thetarantula death, because it ate away at the layer of the womans skin.

BadBrandon,

Try watching it again. The first time I watched it, I was a bit disappointed, but the second time I watched it (and let myself be taken in by the movie's atmosphere) I loved it. Basically, you have to just go with the flow.

I just watched this film tonight and while not as good as Zombie I really enjoyed it. Fulci's gore work amazes me every time and the acting was surprisingly good. Love that ending.
