Genre: Comedy
Plot:
An Indian family in London tries to raise their soccer-playing daughter in a traditional way. Unlike tarty elder sister, Pinky, who is preparing for an Indian wedding and a lifetime of cooking the perfect chapatti, Jess' dream is to play soccer professionally like her hero David Beckham. Wholeheartedly against Jess' unorthodox ambition, her parents eventually reveal that their reservations have more to do with protecting her than with holding her back. When Jess is forced to make a choice between tradition and her beloved sport, her family must decide whether to let her chase her dream...and a soccer ball.

I saw the trailer to this on the DVD of "The Banger Sisters" and I must say, it looks surprisingly good and funny. I had heard of it quite a few times but I never knew what it was about until seeing the trailer. I actually really want to see this one. Natalie Portman lookalike Keira Knightley is a hottie and I really enjoyed her in the Thora Birch thriller The Hole. I've also become a fan of Jonathan Rhys Meyers lately and it's nice to see him in here as well.
I think this very well could be the next My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It might not be quite as big, but I just have a feeling that this is going to be a sleeper hit. It has done really well in other countries and most audiences seem to have really enjoyed it. It's supposed to be a nice light comedy.
If I don't see this one in theaters, then I will check it out for sure on video.
What does everyone else think?

I saw the trailer on Coming Attractions and it looked really strange, the trailer didn't do anything for me. I don't think this would be my kind of movie so I most likely won't end up seeing it.

I remember you saying that you had the DVD. Is it a region 1 DVD or a region 2 DVD? If I can get a region 1 DVD of it off e-bay or something I might just buy it.

Bend it Like Beckham is a great little flick!
It's one of those relaxing on the couch, lazy day movies that is sweet and funny.
I'd reccomend it if only for the bloopers at the end :D

Bend It Like Beckham is a great movie. I saw it a couple of months or so ago and I enjoyed it very much. Its light-hearted and FUN. There's no superstar cast or special effects or blockbuster budget. Its just plain fun and memorable. Its out of theaters here, so I'll be renting the DVD today or tomorrow and I'll put a review up sometime soon. I gave it an 8/10 the first time.. and I think I might stick with that. But you never know.

Mike,
The DVD is from a Malaysian market. It doesn't have special features or anything and isn't great quality. My dad bought it home from when he travelled over there. You can buy it on Region 4 DVD (NZ and Australia).

I rented the DVD today and watched Bend It Like Beckham for the second time. Its a funny feel-good movie and one that you can watch many times without it losing its appeal. Some people have a problem with feel-good sports movies, but I certainly don't. I love Jerry Maguire, and that pretty much falls into that category. The cultural references and general atmosphere is spot-on. The acting is good, not great, but it doesn't have to be. Also, its not a film you can easily guess from trailers or previews. There's a few surprises here and there and makes the trip all the more worthwhile. The lead actress who plays Jess is wonderful and I hope she makes a name for herself in more movies. Erin123 is right about the bloopers.. I didn't catch those when I saw it in the cinema. But I did see it this time, and it was a blast. Its not really bloopers, its something quite different and I think people will like. The music is a big plus point, mixing Indian and English music to make a superb blend. I generally hate pop music, but it was used very well. The movie doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is, a fun little film. I hope it reaches audiences in the US, because I'd like to see more attention given to it. Its a worthy 8/10 and the thought of watching it again doesn't seem too bad at all. Oh yeah, and the movie has some chicks in their underwear. w00t.

I saw this a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its not a very original film, but it does enough to set itself apart from other films and doesnt rely solely on ethnic jokes (greek wedding, im looking yer way....) to make it funny. The actors are all charming beyond belief, especially the lead, and the "heart-warming" moments arent forced and work really well.
Anybody looking for a film guarenteed to put a smile on your face should see Bend it like Beckham now.

I hear this is wonderful, but isn't it about an East Indian girl? And what pisses me off about that is that the majority of the ads have the "hot" blonde chick in them.
Bleh.
However, I'll go see it, because so many people whose opinions I respect love it. But the ads are ass.

I really enjoyed the movie. I felt like it was what My Big Fat Greek Wedding was trying to be but couldn't quite pull off.
Though there are obvious similarities to East Is East, I thought BiLB was much better. East was great but tough to watch at some parts. Beckham has its moments but overall has a much less serious undertone.
I saw two TV spots tonight for it, since they are releasing it in over 1,000 theaters on Friday. I must say, the TV spots were really good, better than the original ones. I think it will get people interested, especially ones that didn't know about it before.

Bend it Like Beckham is one of the most overrated movies ever. I could not believe how horrible it is and how much I hated it. The romance is lame. The comedy is lame. Everything about it is lame. The two leads are cute and that is all this has going for it. It's like a bad sitcom. Corny, forced and unbelievable romance. Obvious and contrived humor. Predictable storyline. I hated this movie with a passion. 0.5/10.

I saw some tv spots too, but what was funny with them was.... They revolved around Kiera, and basically made it out to make her look like the main character "Kiera, the girl in Pirates, bla bla bla" I thought it was funny, cause now they're tryin to use her name to gain publicity.

The first one I saw for it said something like "Starring Pirates Of The Caribbean's Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra." I didn't mind it though, I think it's a smart idea. Hey, whatever gets people into theaters. And with Keira being an "IT" girl right now because of Pirates, it makes perfect sense. If they didn't show much of her in the TV spots and didn't mention her name, I think it would be completely dumb on their part and a wasted opportunity. Now I wish THE HOLE would get a fucking US release! Screw STV, it's too damn good for that. Since Keira is so popular now, I think they should use her name and put THE HOLE in theaters damn it. Even if it's a limited release. It deserves a theatrical release. I'm kind of sick of everyone talking about her now just because she's in Pirates. She'll always be know as the girl from THE HOLE to me, because that's the very first thing I saw the hot Natalie Portman lookalike in.

All the more reason for them to release it. I'm sure tons of guys would check it out just to see her breasts. In fact, they could even focus the marketing on the fact that she does a nude scene in it. That would gain it some attention for sure ;). I really think they should release it though. It's better than STV and deserves at least a limited release here.

Well, The Hole DVD is available in Canada. I even saw a copy or two at my local video store.
Nope, THE HOLE isn't available here in America, which is why I said they should release it here. I pre-ordered mine in like February of 2002 or something off of e-bay, right before it was going to be released. It's a region one Special Edition, or Deluxe Edition, or Collector's Edition, or some friggin' kind of Edition ;). I can't remember which it is for sure. But I will say that it was well worth it, especially since it seems like it will never get released in the US.

"Bend It Like Beckham" is a decent and entertaining film. But I do believe it's being overhyped, it's not as good as many have said it is. All the performances are solid, and the film has several moments of good humor. My only problems with the film is that it becomes way too fluffy and "sugary" towards the end, and, the film does feature one of those cliched romances. In the end, "Bend It Like Beckham" gets my recommendation if you want to have a more-or-less good time at the movies.

I was under the impression this movie has been out in America for several months now? I could have sworn it was in the top 10 box office list for a long time. Maybe I am thinking of something else. Or maybe this is just a re-release or a wider release?
This is from Coming Soon:
Beckham to Expand, Confessions Not So Much
Source: Variety
Wednesday, July 30, 2003
Playing off the popularity of co-star Keira Knightley, Fox Searchlight this weekend will re-expand the romantic comedy Bend It Like Beckham, reaching wide release for the first time in over 1000 theaters. New TV ads refer to "'Pirates of the Caribbean's' Keira Knightley," in hopes of enticing some of the millions who have seen that hit actioner to the long-playing soccer film.
"Beckham," which co-stars Parminder Nagra, reached the box office top 10 in May with just 555 playdates, including a core number of arthouse engagements. Through Sunday, the modestly budgeted British- and Indian-themed pic had rung up $26.3 million domestically.
Meanwhile, Miramax has revealed it's going the other direction with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, planning to re-release the George Clooney film in only a limited number of theaters on August 15. The studio will bring the film to New York and L.A. at first, expanding it further only if the box office there signals market interest. Miramax had originally planned for a 1,000-plus theater re-release.

What an adorable movie this was. I agree with Strider, it's sugary and cliched at times, but what really catches me in movies like this is when they make that OK. The romance was fine by me (vicariously making out with Rhys-Meyers in the sexy soccer gear, thanks), the silly-at-points dialogue was enjoyable, and the rest of the original, spot-on flick was great. Some of my favorite performances of the year, some great quotes, a captivating little story....8/10

The basic plot isn't original, but the take on it is. There are many extremely witty lines, and well-written characters. Things don't have to be Memento-esque in their originality to be original. All you need are some different characters or some well-put lines.

The characters are not different. We've seen characters like this 1,000 times before. Girls trying to prove themselves and their athletic abilities. That is standard stuff. And we disagree 110% on the writing. I didn't find it witty at all. I found it painfully unfunny. Just like the romance. Overly sentimental and predictable and contrived all the way. It's like a bad after school special or Lifetime movie of the week.
WOW! This is truly one of the very best reviewed films of the year. It has 106 POSITIVE reviews and only a measly 15 NEGATIVE reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, which makes it a 88% FRESH. That's very impressive.

I've felt that way before. Where a movie gets a really good response from audiences and critics, yet you have no idea why and wonder if you saw the same movie.
8 Mile got some pretty impressive reviews, and audiences seemed to love it. Yet when I saw it on DVD, I thought it was really lame. It was boring and somewhat laughable. After seeing it, if an Eminem song comes on the radio now, I turn the station right away, I can't even sit through it. I actually thought the trailer looked really good, but the movie was anything but. I have no idea what critics and audiences saw in it.
One that got mixed reviews from critics but a really good response from audiences was Jackass. I actually thought it might be pretty funny the way people were going on about it, but it ended up being pretty stupid. A lot of the jokes were lame and not that funny, and it seemed like the movie was made out of parts that were rejected from the show for being too dumb and unfunny.
Then there's The Hours, which looked great and had a great cast, but was just a big disappointment. It was all about the acting, nothing more. It didn't feel like any heart went into it. It just came off pointless and overrated. Even if the acting is good, I can't see how so many people could not realise just how pointless this movie is. Nothing ever even really happens for its 2 hour runtime.
I still want to see Bend It Like Beckham and think it looks good, but it doesn't bother me if you didn't like it. Everyone has their own taste, and not everyone will like/dislike the same things. One persons trash is another persons treasure. Or one persons treasure is another persons trash. ;)

Well I liked all those movies, except one...
8 Mile - Nothing special, but certainly a decent enough movie.
Jackass - Idiotic but funny most of the time. Humor is really subjective though.
The Hours - Solid acting but unsympathetic characters and rather boring.
Bend It Like Beckham - For the most part, it's generic. But I found it fun, endearing and uplifting.
So you're completely right, Mike. One person's trash is another person's treasure.

But still its very very good. 8/10 WAY better then My Big Fat Greek Wedding!

Or The Insider, Fight Club and Magnolia, which all are better than American Beauty, The Sixth Sense and The Cider House Rules. I don't think any of the latter three even deserved a nomination. But that's a different thread. But IMO, all six are far better than Beckham. I'd rather gouge out my eyeballs with a spoon and eat them than watch Beckham again.

The only film I've ever been TRULY TRULY happy with winning the Best Picture Oscar was AMERICAN BEAUTY (10/10 or A+). A truly GREAT film that was the best of 1999 and one of the best of all time. It deserved every single win it got.

I'll have to strongly disagree! American Beauty was perhaps the last time the Academy got it right. Where they actually awarded one of the best films of the year.

The Insider was too good to win the Oscar.
Just like Goodfellas.
But as for BILB, I enjoyed the writing of the film. More intelligent than MBFGW. And the leads were much more appealing.

Wow...just...wow. Couldn't agree less. I can't believe somebody would actually think the dinky Cider House Rules was better than American Beauty. To each his own I guess, but...wow.
Anyway, regarding Bend It Like Beckham, I'm pissed as hell that I missed this one. It played very briefly in my area and I did not have a chance to see it. Now that the word of mouth has gotten pretty big I thought I'd have a second chance, but it's playing nowhere near me! :( :( :(

Agreed...American Beauty was an absolutely beautiful, shocking tale of lives gone awry, of what's going on behind the scenes of a happy family, asking you to "look closer." Great, GREAT movie and it deserved all of its awards.
Bend it Like Beckham looks good and sweet, I'll catch it on video (it'll never come to my theater!!!!)

Bend It Like Beckham...is a wonderfully, delightful and joyous film about believing in yourself and fighting for your dreams. It has heart, humor and romance and I couldn't but help leave the theatre with a huge smile on my face after seeing one of the most feel good-films of the year. I really didn't know what to expect going into this film except it was about an Indian girl who plays football and it is named after famous football star David Beckham...who is more known for his super-star marriage to Victoria Adams aka Posh Spice of the Spice Girls. The story concerns Jess(Jesminder Bhamra) a young girl from a traditional Indian family living in London. All she wants to do is play football(and she is damn good at it too). She fancies herself after English and former Manchester United(now Real Madrid) superstar midfielder David Beckham, who is famous for his electrifying, curling free kicks hence "Bend it". Her traditional Indian parents played by Anupam Kher and Shaheen Khan, who is hilarious as the mother disapprove of Jess' football obsession. Naturally they want her to learn their traditional values and find a nice Indian boy to marry etc. etc. All the while they are preparing a traditional wedding for their oldest daughter Pinky played by Archie Panjabi. Jess' skills are quickly discovered by Jules, the gorgeous Keira Knightley from Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl...who is absolutely great in this film. I loved her in this and to me is the standout performance in the film. She quickly convinces Jess to join an all girls football team coached by a handsome young Irishman named Joe played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who is also a very good. A sweet and smart romance develops between Jess and Joe and is also complicated by Jules' affection for the coach too. Jess' quickly becomes a part of the team, but is troubled because she has to hide it all from her parents. I must also make special mention to Juliet Stevenson, who is very funny as Jules' mom(Her husband trying to explain the offside rule to her is a pretty priceless scene) . The basic story of a child from a traditional culture and upbringing trying to break free and go her own way is as formulaic as they come. This film though carries it off with a fresh, fun, heartwarming and winning style and it's a pleasure to watch. Movies are not WHAT they are about, but HOW they are about something(stolen from Roger Ebert...must give credit where it is due). This film touched me on so many levels...I could relate to it so many ways....and no I'm not a young girl or of Indian descent, but I know how much the Indian community has become so much a part of the culture over there. Yes I am a huge football fan, it comes from growing up in England...one particular scene where Jess misses a penalty kick against a German team, and the coach references English footballers blowing penalty kicks against Germans is a direct refence to England's painful elimination from the 1990 World Cup against W. Germany. A memory from my childhood that I will never forget. I also enjoyed the cameos of former great English footballers Gary Lineker and John Barnes. Also the music towards the end of the film during the wedding party/final match is called Nessum Dorma that was made famous by Pavarotti and was the actual theme from that World Cup...its an awesome piece of music(it was also used at the end of The Sum of All Fears). That brings me to the soundtrack of the film which I also loved! It was a nice mix of both traditional Indian music and modern pop/rock songs...it was a nice combination and fit the theme of the story very nicely. As far as the direction and cinematography is concerned, it was pretty straight forward...no real neat camera tricks(though the football scenes themselves were fast and often hard to follow)...the general straightforward style added a nice realism to London which basically is a grey and dull place to look at sometimes. Overall, Bend It Like Beckham is just a feel-good comedy that is funny, touching and has surprising depth for its basic storyline about a young girl trying to break from her traditional Indian roots to play football. The cast is uniformally great with Keira Knightley shining in a wonderful supporting performance(this girl has got it). One of the best films of the year and simple a delight from beginning to end.

Wow... pretty strong words. I think "American Beauty" is one of the best movies ever made, period. But, to each his own...
I finally caught "Bend it Like Beckham" over the weekend, and found it to be a total charmer. Parminder Nagra is wonderful in the lead. Shame about some of the tacked-on subplots... but the movie is so sweet, cute and featherweight that you don't mind that it's predictable. 7/10

I watched this movie after I read joblo's review. Normally I'm not a big fan of chick flicks, which is what I was expecting the movie to be. I was surprised to find myself so thoroughly drawn into this movie.
I don't really consider this movie to be a comedy, or a sports movie. I'd call it a character movie(which happens to be my favourite kind of movie) giving us a glimpse into someone else's world and doing a great job. In the end I think the message is that no matter how different the cultures we come from might be there are certain things that everyone has in common.
8/10
PS - Mike having read some of your reviews of other movies I'd almost be willing to bet money that you will love this movie.

This was a pretty decent movie.
I hate the look and sound of Indian culture - NOTE: I am not saying I don't like Indian people! - I am only saying that I don't find this kind of stuff appealing to me.
Needless to say, there was a LOT of Indian wedding, colors, language... all fine with me, because I still liked the movie. That's quite a testament, too. If it wasn't a very good movie AND there was all that Indian stuff, I would have run out of the theater screaming.
It was your typcial, run of the mill story of an unknown underdog going against the odds to come out on top. Although I didn't get much more than what I've seen in other movies, I was entertained and enjoyed myself.
6.5/10

That's bullshit. I'm pretty sure it would be pretty well known that she croaked. Plus, she is in like 2 movies this year and is on ER. She's alive.
