This weekend is gonna be tough to predict, because I think that BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE is gonna have good staying power. For now I'll just post my early predictions for the three movies opening, and then post my final ones later.
Agent Cody Banks - This is gonna be a hit. It reminds me a lot of SPY KIDS, and kids love both of the stars, as well as recognizing them from their hit TV shows. I predict an opening of about $19 million and a finish close to $75 million.
The Hunted - This will have a decent return, but I can't see it being too big. The subject matter is darker, and it has TEARS OF THE SUN to compete with. I'd say an opening of close to $12 million
Willard - This is gonna bomb. Sorry, fellow schmoes, it's gonna happen. The movie has gotten zero advertising, and the trailers are disgusting and stupid. Cripsin Glover is neither a recognizable face or name, and New Line is dumping it into theaters with a very low screen count of 1800. I can't see an opening of more than $4 million and a finish of more than $10 million.

Actually, I've seen a ton of Willard ads, but the premise itself is unfortunately enough to guarantee a low gross.

"Agent Cody Banks"- This film is hard for me to predict. It looks so awful, but I am sure that families will still line up in droves to see Frankie Muniz kick ass(writing that made me ). I am sure MGM will give it a decent amount of theatres, and the marketing is heavy on kid-friendly TV stations. It will have minimal competition in "Bringing Down The House" and to an extent, "Daredevil", but I am going to predict an opening of 15 million.
"Willard"- New Line Cinema wants to build a franchise about the nerd and his killer rats, but I doubt it'll even get close to making back its 20 million budget in the United States and Canada. I know films like "Deep Blue Sea" and "Anaconda" were moderate hits, but bio-engineered sharks on a high-tech ocean complex and a giant snake attacking people in the jungle are much more flashy plots than a misunderstood 30-something man ripping his boss apart with plain rodents. Plus, the trailers and TV spots look like a campy flick that should be in the bargain bin of a B-horror video retailer, not in theatres. I predict an opening of 3 million and quick drops.
"The Hunted"- This will be the biggest opener of the weekend. Tommy Lee Jones will attract mature moviegoers who loved him in films like "Space Cowboys" and "The Fugitive". Also, many of those mature moviegoers have most likely watched films like "The Pledge", "The Usual Suspects", and "Traffic" which all feature this film's co-star, Benicio Del Toro. Younger audiences will be attracted to the hunt/knife fighting plot. I believe people from almost all demographics will show up. I predict 17 million.

4mill...
******EST. THEATER COUNTS******
Agent Cody Banks - 2,800
The Hunted - 2,500
Willard - 1,800
Prozac Nation - Limited
Bend It Like Beckham (3/12) - 6
Spun - 1 (NYC)
AGENT CODY BANKS - 19 MILLION
WILLARD - 3.5 MILLION
Even though I want to see this movie, I don't think there's very many people that feel the same way. I honestly cannot picture someone saying "let's go see Willard." This looks like a movie more people will just rent on video than actually go to the theater and see. It doesn't help that the TV spots aren't very good and it looks too campy and dark for a lot of people. I honestly don't see this movie opening with more than 4 Million and I doubt it will finish with more than 9 Million.
THE HUNTED - 12 MILLION
I can't picture this one making more than 12 Million. The TV spots aren't very good and the main reason people will see it is just for the actors, which aren't enough to attract a big audience on their own, they need a movie that actually looks really good. It should do "ok," but that's about it. I'm thinking a 12 Million opening and a 30-35 Million finish.

Actually, I've seen a ton of TV spots for this one. Out of the three new wide releases opening this next weekend, this is the one I've seen the most advertising for. Although that doesn't matter, it still can't help this flick. The TV spots just aren't very good and mainstream audiences won't care about this one. There's no doubt it will become a cult classic though and will be better received on video.

It's gonna be close, but "The Hunted" is going to be bigger; the trailer makes it look pretty interesting (Most of his victims don't even know he's in the room). The general population, I'm sorry to say, is kind of stupid, and "Agent Cody Banks" is too much of a title for their short attention spans (or in this case, perhaps memory spans) to remember or care which movie it is. And movies with names in the title (e.g. David Gale) obviously don't gather a lot of curiosity if that's all you have to go by (and for most people, that is one of the first things they have to look at). On the other hand, comedy does seem to be in good shape after the opening of "House" so yeah it will be darn close. I still think despite fewer screens, Hunted will nail it if for no other reason than a catchy title. Crispin Glover is more popular than you might think, at least from what I've seen but it does seem to be a "region" thing.
The Hunted - $21 million
