Prince wrote and performed the original version of Kiss, so I don't think it could technically be called a cover version.

In the uncool category there are many but the king of all awful cover versions belongs to MADONNA,who managed to cover one of my all time favourite songs and stripped it of all it's beauty, meaning and resonance. If that wasn't enough, Ciccone then used said cover song in one of her turd movies. Shame on her for covering it and shame on me for not doing everything in my power to stop that massacre. The song is...
AMERICAN PIE.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...how can we have a discussion of covers both good and bad with absolutely nobody mentioning the greatest cover of all time. A cover so good, that when the original artist performs the song live, he performs it in the style of the cover. Of course I am talking about the classic Jimi Hendrix version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".
Some other sweet covers are:
- Johnny Cash "Hurt" (NIN)
- A New Found Glory "The Neverending Story"
- The Bloodhound Gang "Along Comes Mary" (The Association)
- Class of '99 "Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2" (Pink Floyd)
- Foo Fighters "Baker Street" (Gerry Rafferty)
- System of a Down "Legend of Zelda"
- The Lone Rangers "Degenerated" (Reagan Youth)
- Five Knuckle Shuffle "We Want the Airwaves" (The Ramones)
- Five Knuckle Shuffle "What's My Name?" (Snoop Dogg)

Rage Against the Machine- "Ghost of Tom Joad" (originally by Bruce Springsteen)...actually pretty much any song on their "Renegades" CD
And I'll name one uncool one that's already been mentioned but it's worth mentioning again:
Smashmouth- "I'm a Believer" (originally by The Monkees)

Cool Covers:
You guys have mentioned a lot of great ones but here's a few i didn't see mentioned...
Emiliana Torrini - "Stephanie Says", "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You", "Ruby Tuesday", "Sounds Of Silence". (Sorry, i just really like Emiliana!)
Vanessa Paradis - "Across The Universe". I Also like Fiona Apple's version, she gives it a dreamy quality.
Ben Folds - "Tiny Dancer". It's just funny as hell!
Did anyone mention Marilyn Manson's cover of "Another Brick In The Wall Part II"? Cos it totally rules.
The cover George did of "Under The Milky Way" was beautiful.
Tears For Fears do a fab cover of Radiohead's "Creep", which kinda surprised me.
The Sundays - "Wild Horses". Except it reminds me of teen movies, which probably isn't a good sign!
Any cover done by Aimee Mann is brilliant! I love her "One".
Kasey Chambers does a killer cover of "True Colours" and also of "These Days" by Powderfinger, which is such a brilliant song to begin with, you wouldn't think any cover would do it justice, but Kasey's does.
Tori Amos - "I Don't Like Mondays". She also does a much better version of "Landslide" than the Dixie Chicks. Also a totally 'un-pop' version of "Losing My Religion", which is interesting, and certainly different.
Kinda liking Rufus Wainwright's version of "Across The Universe", i didn't at first, but now it's grown on me.
Rasputina - "This Little Piggy". I freaken love this!!! Download it - seriously it's a trip! They also do a kick ass version of "Wish You Were Here", which kinda makes you wonder why they never used cello in the original. OK, well it doesn't, but it's pretty good.
Cibo Matto - "About A Girl" & "Black Hole Sun" - bloody brilliant!
Fiona Apple does a cool cover of Bill Withers' "Use Me" and gives Jimi's "Angel" a good try. I like her, she rules.
The Brown Derbies - "Karma Police", love the vocals - bumbumbumbadabada!
Anything covered by Ben Harper. Especially lovin his "Get Up, Stand Up".
Eric Clapton doing "Romeo & Juliet" is fucken awesome! Still love my Dire Straits though.
Uncool:
Sarah McLachlan - "Unchained Melody". I just didn't like it, it bored me.
Robbie Williams' Sinatra covers annoy me, dunno why, i think its just him.
Wyclef Jean's version of "Wish You Were Here". It's actually not too bad but im not a fan of the 'beats' in this song, it doesn't work IMO.
Any pop covers of classic songs usually end up disasters, though unfortunately very popular among the masses. My god Attomic Kitten suck ass. Recently heard Shakaya's version of Jacko's "The Way You Make Me Feel" - what in the world were they thinking!?

Just now I saw on Jimmy Kimmel Live one of the worst covers of all time. It was some new "punk", term used quite loosely, band called The Transplants. They covered White Riot by The Clash, and it was absolutely horrific. I think my ears almost started bleeding.

I don't remember the band, but someone did a cover of an Easy -E song a couple of years ago that was great. They did it acoustic and slow. It started "Woke up late at about noon, just thought that I had to be in Compton soon" Great stuff!
BAD:
Any attempt to cover Fugazi. Even the Red Hot Chile Peppers, who I love, tried to do Waiting Room live and F'd it up.

The greatest cover in the history of music IMHO is ...
Tricky's Black Steel. Martina's vocals are incredible and the music is so fuckin cool. More of an interpretation than a cover, I will even go as far as saying it demolished the great originial Public Enemy song.
Tricky has also done alot of other covers. His best are:
Tattoo
Children's Story
Mellow
Singing the Blues
1 Da Women (Cover of the Wonder Woman theme song)
However, BlowBack produced one of the most horrid covers I've heard. That of Nirvana's Something in the Way.
Other great covers include Eve's rendition of No, No, No. Not much twist, but it works great.
Mariah Carey's Bringin' On the Heartbreak is great stuff from a nosediving artist.
And Johnny Cash's version of Bride Over Troubled Water is one of the worst songs I have ever heard.

For the record, I usually dont listen to much on the radio, Alot of it (even the rock stations), sound like crap to me, mainly cause they play the same songs over and over, and then other new bands make new songs that sound the same as the old songs and they get played over and over... ad infinitum (did I use that phrase correctly?)
But I digress. I just heard the Atari's "Boys of Summer" cover, and for some reason, it really stuck with me. The best cover song that I have heard is Rob Zombie's cover of "Brick House" on the Ho1KC sound track. Just awesome!

Sheryl Crow. This dumb bitch has ripped songs from everyone, Led Zeppelin to Cat Stevens. I hope her desperate unoriginality embarasses her. It is noted that, yes, she does write her own songs and provides the world that's interested with some incredibly atrocious crap, but is that supposed to qualify her to cover a classic rock tune once every few years?
She might take a cue from her male counterpart, Kid Rock, and be a piece of untalented trash which belongs back in the dark forgotten realms of obscurity. Also, her teeth are fake.
