I created this tournament to try and find out who the best new actor of 2002 was and who has the most promising acting future ahead of them. The first actor in each match to get to 10 votes wins.

Here's the contenders:

Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary)
Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher)
Aaron Stanford (Tadpole)
Emile Hirsch (The Dangerous Lives Of Altar Boys)
Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein)
Britney Spears (Crossroads)
Amber Tamblyn (The Ring)

Ian Somerhalder (The Rules Of Attraction)
Laura Regan (They)
Eminem (8 Mile)
Matthew O'Leary (Frailty)
Alison Lohman (White Oleander)

ROUND 1 - MATCH 1

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL (Secretary)

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/lions_gate_films/secretary/maggie_gyllenhaal/secretary2.jpg

vs.

DEREK LUKE (Antwone Fisher)

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/fox_searchlight/antwone_fisher/derek_luke/antwone2.jpg

Maggie Gyllenhaal looks excellent in Secretary. Derek Luke may give a good performance in Antwone Fisher, but the movie looks like something you'd see on Lifetime. No contest, my vote goes to Maggie Gyllenhaal for Secretary!

P.S. Mike, you made me cry! Why leave off Andy Serkis (Gollum, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), but have Lexa Doig (Jason X)?! :(

I agree about Andy Serkis, but, Bonnie Wright didn't really have a huge or truly effective role.

My vote says Maggie

I'm sorry, I couldn't really remember anymore newcomers/breakout performances from 2002. I wrote down all of the ones I could remember. But if it will make you feel better, I'll add them ;). Although wasn't Gollum a CGI character!? Didn't Andy Serkis just do the voice!? If that's the case, I don't really feel right about adding him because it's not a real "in the flesh" performance. It just wouldn't feel right. As soon as I get an answer then I'll decide whether or not I should add him.

I haven't seen either film, but I will vote for Derek Luke because Antwone Fisher looks great.

By the way Mike, nice to see that you included Amber Tamblyn (The Ring)...I have been a fan of hers since I first saw her on my Mom's favorite soap General Hospital about 5 years ago.

Oh and shouldn't you have Laura Regan starring in "They" rather than "TROA"? And where is Abigail Breslin for "Signs" dude! :)

It was my pleasure including Amber Tamblyn. I knew she was on General Hospital, but I haven't watched that show. However, I really enjoyed her in The Ring. She wasn't in the movie that much, but during the time she was I couldn't help but feel that she had a really good screen presence. I also really enjoyed her on an episode of the new Twilight Zone on UPN.

And oops, thanks for letting me know about the mistake I made with Laura Regan, I meant to put They but for some reason I accidentily put The Rules Of Attraction.

Sorry about not including Abigail Breslin. I might add her if I can come up with another newcomer/breakout performance from 2002.

No problem Mike :). I agree, Amber Tamblyn has great screen presence. I hope good things come her way in the future...I dig her alot!

Other performances you could include:

Eve for Barbershop
Shiri Appleby for Swimfan
Jack Rovello for The Hours (he was amazing)
Maribel Verdu for Y Tu Mama Tambien
America Ferrara for Real Women Have Curves
Ellen Pompeo for Moonlight Mile

She was great to though, as were Daveigh's voice talents in Lilo and Stitch!

I'll add five of these six recommendations and throw in Abigail Breslin. Otherwise it would be uneven.

And by the way, you better see Kissing Jessica Stein ASAP because I don't want you voting against the two stars just because you haven't seen it yet ;).

You better ;). It's been out for awhile now and you still haven't checked it out. You've rented quite a few movies since it came out on video, but none of them have been KJS. I hope I don't come off as rude, I just don't understand why you haven't seen it yet if you actually think it looks like a good movie. Usually if I want to see a movie bad enough, I will see it as soon as possible. If I didn't check it out in theaters, I will rent it either right away or shortly after it was released on video.

Anyway, if you rent it then you'd probably be best off watching it by yourself, since it's pretty dialogue heavy and it's easier to get into the movie and pay more attention when watching it alone.

(He's on the right)

I thought Emile Hirsch did a nice job in The Dangerous Lives Of Altar Boys, but I absolutely loved Aaron Stanford in Tadpole. I think he gave one of the best performances of 2002 in that movie. I'm looking forward to seeing him in X-Men 2 and I'm hoping that will be his big break. He's a very talented actor.

My vote goes to Aaron Stanford (Tadpole)!

Gollum is a CGI character, but Serkis did both the voice and the movement. He did all the movement in the studio with a motion capture suit, and he was also on the set to shoot his scenes with Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin). I think, if you do a part II, you should seriously consider putting Andy on it. Even if you hate LOTR(shame on you! just kidding!), many people, including I, would consider them some of the best films ever made. I would like to give you props for having Nicholas Hoult on the list. Sadly, his wonderful performance in AAB was largely forgotten at award ceremonies.

As for this round, my vote goes to Aaron. "Tadpole" was light, but very funny.

ROUND 1 - MATCH 3

JENNIFER WESTFELDT (Kissing Jessica Stein)

http://www.dailytelegraph.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,1658,217880,00.jpg

vs.

BRITNEY SPEARS (Crossroads)

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/paramount_pictures/crossroads/britney_spears/crossroads3.jpg

I didn't think Britney Spears did a horrible job in Crossroads. She definitely wasn't as bad as some were saying. I think the main reason she got such bad feedback is because it was BRITNEY SPEARS. If it had been some newcomer that nobody even knew, then I doubt the buzz would have been nearly as bad. I'll admit, she wasn't great, but she did as good as she had to, considering the movie wasn't exactly an Oscar quality film.

Jennifer Westfeldt would have to be my absolute favorite newcomer of 2002. I absolutely loved Kissing Jessica Stein and found her to be very cute and charming. Considering the film was a romantic comedy, I think she gave quite the performance. It's definitely one of my top 5 favorite female performances of 2002.

Britney was fine, but Jennifer was GREAT, so my vote easily goes to JENNIFER WESTFELDT...

***Note: Remember guys, this tournament is to find who gave the better performance, not just who's hotter, although you can take that into consideration too. I'm just stating that this tournament is more about "talent" than "looks." But you can vote for whoever you want to. So, for example, if you really thought Britney Spears gave the better performance, then pick her, but try not to do it just because you think she's hot ;).

I know it may sound cruel to Britney, but I actually agree with that statement. There's no doubt that Jennifer's performance was MUCH better than Britney's performance. Hell, even if I hadn't seen Kissing Jessica Stein yet I'd still know that her performance is probably better than Britney's. Although I didn't think Britney did a horrible job, I still find it hard to think of her as "Britney the actress." Frankly, I still find that idea kind of laughable. She wasn't bad in Crossroads, but I still think she has a lot of proving to do. But I'm hoping she doesn't decide to do too many movies, I don't really want her to have some big successful acting career. Jennifer is a real actress, and a real talented one at that. Her and Heather Juergensen, who both wrote and star in Kissing Jessica Stein, are also two talented writers. I think they've both got the acting and writing thing down. Britney, on the other hand, feels more like "a singer trying to act." She just feels less "real."

I haven't seen KJS yet (I went today to rent it Mike and it was out) and I don't doubt that she is good in it, but as I havent' seen it, I am voting for Britney Spears who gave a decent performance in "Crossroads".

Tsk Tsk ;)! This match could have been over already, which would have been extremely fast, especially compared to the last match, but alas, it's still going. Oh well, right now it's 9-2, in favor of Jennifer Westfeldt. I really hope Jennifer wins, because Britney could end up getting 8 more votes before Jennifer gets the 1 more she needs to win, although, that's pretty unlikely ;).

Anyway, I don't care DH, I understand wanting to vote for the underdog, which I do sometimes too. However, if you would have voted for Britney at the beginning of the match, there would have been trouble ;):).

ROUND 1 - MATCH 4

AMBER TAMBLYN (The Ring)

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/dreamworks_skg/the_ring/_group_photos/amber_tamblyn3.jpg
(She's on the left)

vs.

RUSSELL SAMS (The Rules Of Attraction)

http://www.darkhorizons.com/2002/rules/rules8.jpg
(He's on the right)

This is a really hard choice for me, I'm torn between the two. I really like Amber Tamblyn and thought she had a great screen presence in The Ring, even if she wasn't in the movie much. I've also liked her in a couple of her guest appearances on shows like UPN's The Twilight Zone and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But then I also loved Russell Sams in The Rules Of Attraction. He wasn't in it long, but he stole the scenes he was in. I found him hilarious. Of course, his part got less funny after the first time I saw it. Plus, even though I thought he was excellent, I don't think his "spazz" scene was enough to show if he's a talented actor or not. However, his performance was memorable and I'm sure it will be the performance he'll be most remembered for. But I can actually see Amber Tamblyn having a good acting career ahead of her, while with Sams, I'm unsure.

So, although I really like both, I have to go with Amber Tamblyn (The Ring)!

A.J. Hakari

Gotta go with Russell on this one. The dinner with "Dick" was my favorite scene last year, thanks mostly to Sams's performance, which displays exactly how much of a shit the character didn't give.

I agree! THE RULES OF ATTRACTION (2/10) was just awful, the only decent performance in it was from James Van Der Beek. Although I don't think Amber is that talented, she was in the (MUCH) better movie so I vote for her.

ROUND 1 - MATCH 5

IAN SOMERHALDER (The Rules Of Attraction)

http://www.iansomerhalder.net/ianmtv4.jpg

vs.

LAURA REGAN (They)

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0283632/CN-7058.jpg
(She's the one on the left, in case someone's not sure ;))

I thought Ian Somerhalder was excellent in The Rules Of Attraction (10/10 or A+). His character, Paul, was my favorite, along with Jessica Biel's character. Both gave fun and entertaining performances. However, the fact that he seems like a prick who's in love with himself in real life makes it harder for me to like him. Of course, maybe that's why he was a model in the first place, because he thought he was hot. I won't deny that he is good looking, but I can't stand when people let it go to their head.

Laura Regan really surprised me in They (7/10 or B). From the trailer and TV spots I thought her acting would be a little plain, but when I saw the movie I was impressed, she actually did a nice job. She gave a very natural performance. She also seems really nice and down-to-earth as well, which makes me like her more.

Hmm, this isn't a very easy choice. On one hand there's a talented actor who's into himself, and on the other there's a talented actress who seems really nice and down-to-earth. Man, I can't decide yet, I need to think about this one and I will throw in my vote later. I'll probably just give it to the one who's losing.

Alright, even though Laura is losing and I said I'd probably just vote for whoever was losing, I can't. Ian Somerhalder may be conceited, but I still loved him in The Rules Of Attraction. He was excellent and one of the best things about it. I really like him as an actor, but I'm not so sure how I feel about him as a person. But despite my feelings about Ian Somerhalder "the person," I have to admit he's pretty damn talented. So, with that being said, I have to give my vote to Ian Somerhalder.

Hmm, personally I don't see how his playing the role he did in the movie was "that" daring. So he was bisexual---who cares!? Every actor and their uncle have played a gay role before, is it really that shocking or controversial anymore!? Personally, I don't think so, it's not like it's not something we don't see all of the time. It's not as if he got naked and had gay sex in it. Sure, he pranced around in his boxer-briefs looking like a pretty boy, and he did do a very good job of acting, but I still don't see how his role was daring. And how did he pull out all of the stops!? By kissing another guy!? Big deal! That's nothing, at least not something I'd file under "pulling out all of the stops." Personally, I think it was pretty lame of him to go and make homophobic remarks on the DVD in the commentary after playing this role. If you ask me, I think he's a little ungrateful for this role that he's sure to be remembered for.

Anyway, Ian Somerhalder won that match 11-1... I'm happy Laura got AT LEAST 1 vote (thanks for that DH ;))...

I haven't seen 8 MILE yet. I'm sure Eminem does fine in it, but since he's basically just playing himself I don't see how that makes his performance anything special.

I thought Matthew O'Leary was very good in FRAILTY, especially since he's a kid and a lot of times they can be annoying and cheesy in movies, but he never once bothered me. I actually found myself caring about him.

Wow, I still can't get over how excellent she was. Personally, I thought About A Boy was Hugh Grant's movie. The kid was really good and all, but he didn't amaze me as much as Alison did. ROUND 1 - MATCH 8

EVAN RACHEL WOOD (Little Secrets)

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/HH/0939697/Headshot.jpg

vs.

NIA VARDALOS (My Big Fat Greek Wedding)

http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/04.25.02/gifs/greekwedding-0217.jpg

I enjoyed Nia Vardalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She didn't blow me away or anything, but I thought she did a nice job.

However, Evan Rachel Wood is an extremely wonderful young actress. She first caught my attention on ABC's critically acclaimed Once & Again, and has since given some nice performances in Simone and especially Little Secrets. She carried this mature family movie on her shoulders and made it very enjoyable. She just continues to impress me. I can't wait to see her edgier performance in the upcoming indie THIRTEEN. I'm dying for that one. I was so pissed to learn that I missed her guest appearance on an episode of this seasons CSI. My cousin is the one that saw it and she told me that she was excellent and her character was so evil. My cousin didn't really care for her on Once & Again because she thinks she's ugly, but she said she was great on this episode of CSI. If I would have known she was going to be on I definitely would have watched it. I know I'm going to look out for the rerun this summer because it sounds like a really good episode. ******CSI SPOILERS******I guess she played a girl who killed her mother because she loved her dad so much and was used to it being just them. When her mom comes back in their life she gets jealous and kills her mom and puts her in the freezer. Maybe I'm just twisted, but I think it sounds like a wicked episode and I'm very sorry I missed it. I would love to see Evan Rachel Wood in a role like that, where she plays a bad girl, instead of always playing the mature girl who does well in school (not that there's anything wrong with that ;)).******END CSI SPOILERS****** Anyway, I've been going on and on, so I suppose I should shut up now.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD easily gets my vote! She's a very promising young actress and she gave a fine performance in Little Secrets, making it a family movie that was actually more than tolerable.

As much as I loved GREEK WEDDING and wish Vardalos a great career in comedy, I vote for Ms. Wood. She was terrific in LITTLE SECRETS and appears to have a long, healthy career of great movies ahead of her.

Saying Mandy Moore isn't a ditz is like saying Anna Nicole Smith is skinny. Have you ever seen her on MTV???? I remember seeing Kate Bosworth on some TV show doing an interview for Blue Crap (:D) and she also seemed sort of ditzzy.... Now, I've only seen Mandy Moore act in The Princess Diaries and she wasn't anything to cream yourself over.... Kate Bosworth only had like a minute of screentime in The Rules of Attractionand she didn't really display any acting talents either....

ROUND 1 - MATCH 11

LEXA DOIG (Jason X)

http://www.bilderundco.de/Bilder/Lexa_Doig/6l/lexa003b.jpg

vs.

BIANCA KAJLICH (Halloween: Resurrection)

http://www.biancakajlich.com/halloweenset3.jpg

Two "horror" girls will be fighting it out in this match. Instead of going up against a psycho killer, they're going up against eachother.

Bianca Kajlich was alright in Halloween: Resurrection. She was pretty much the best thing about the movie, which definitely isn't saying much. However, after seeing her on Dawson's Creek, I'm sort of annoyed by her.

I thought Lexa Doig kicked ass in Jason X. I liked her tough, smart, and hot character. I remember a funny part where she says something to two of the other female characters, but I can't remember exactly what it was. All I remember is that it was funny and her character was pretty kick ass.

It's not too hard for me to choose between these two. I thought Lexa pretty much rocked all around. Her character was fun, sassy, and smart. My vote is definitely going to LEXA DOIG!!!
