View Full Version : Oscars won't be postponed if war happens.

The academy announced that they won't postpone the Oscars if a war in Iraq happens. In my opinion, this is a very smart decision. The Oscars went on during World War II and Vietnam, and during tough times, people like to watch movies and T.V shows to escape harsh realities. Kudos to them for making the right choice, we shouldn't let a war that the U.S is most likely going to win postpone a show that honors the film industry.

What do you think ? Good or bad decision ?

If a war in Iraq really happens I would definitely NOT want to watch the Oscars on TV but the news instead. I couldn't care less about some award show in the case of such a tragic event... that's just bloody escapism!

There's that old saying though, "the show must go on". And I'm glad it will.

I'm sure that we'll see enough about the war whenever they're not on that at least I'll be glad to watch something besides the news.

I'll be honest, I'm an unhealthy human being...I love escapism in such cases, and would watch just to have those few hours...before there is nothing to escape to (Oscars are on once a year, news would be 24/7).

I'm glad they decided to go on with the show.

Great News Tom!

I for one am sick of the war on Iraq and it hasn't even started yet for christ's sake. You turn on CNN and all they talk about is Iraq, Bush, the bashing of the French, ...blah blah blah.. I rarely hear them talk about any current news stories anymore, stuff that has already happened and I find that kind of sad.

I'm happy as hell that the Oscars will go on. I mean they are on ABC, even if a war breaks out every other channel will air war news anyways.

right, but we're talking about a WAR! That's not your everyday news ...I don't wanna say that they have to cancel the Oscars. I just dislike the Academy's statement that - no matter what happens - the Oscars will take place. I think they should decide on that issue depending on the situation on march 22, and not already NOW.

You have to understand though, the situation in Vietnam was at least ten times worse than Iraq. And compared to World War II, the Iraq situation looks like a water gun. If the show went on during those periods of chaos, they will still go on today: war or no war. It usually takes a great tragedy on U.S soil to get the Oscars postponed, there is a difference between war in another nation and national tragedys.

Well, that's what I'm saying. Since this is such a turbulent time, we're going to have a lot of news, and I will be watching more than I usually do anyway. I was merely saying that 3 or 4 hours of escapism wouldn't be too bad on my already delicate state of mind. :)

I know, I'm starting to get sick of CNN (should be called PNN: Propoganda News Network), and that blonde bimbo called Paula Zahn. They can't even pronounce Iraq right!

maybe you're right and a lil' bit of escapism won't hurt... or I'm just to tired to argue ;) (hell, it's already 3:30am here in the UK!)

in times like this i notice how superficial and stupid the oscars are, oscars revolve around money, war does too. hmm, i don't think i'll be seeing the news or the oscars 'cause at a time where people are dying for a STUPID frigging war both of them make me anxious. that's all i have to say.

I can't even watch CNN anymore. The new format that the channel took the last couple of years is awful. It is like you said the Propaganda network now. And Paula Zahn! WORST ANCHOR WOMAN EVER! She is so damn annoying.

Heck, just last week they cancelled their only decent program TalkBack Live as the CNN heads thought that it has no significance anymore in this time of war. PUHLEEZE!

For fuck's sake, even Lou Dobbs "Money Line" show has turned into 60 minutes of so-called news on the so-called "war on terrorism". He hardly talks about the stock market, money matters or anything anymore.

And CNN wonders why they have lost their position as the number one cable news channel to Fox News.........maybe if they actually reported "Real" news, they would re-gain some viewers!

Nicole Kidman has reported that if a war is announced she will not attend -- it wasn't detailed if this was in protest or based on fear for security. Either way she will be sending her funny nose to accept the award -- and lets face if she wins its only going to be the nose that deserves it.

How superficial are the Oscars? -- How superficial is war. Perhaps we should combine the two -- and the award for Best War goes to Iraq Part 2.

LMFAO

I would like to see a face off between Dirk Diggler's penis, and Nicole Kidman's nose. :D

Demi Moore's tits should be nominated, too.

Not everyday news? Some kind of war is being reported nearly every day since God knows when.

MY STAND: I'm glad the Oscars will go on. It will be a huge relief to all those bad news.

heh. Of COURSE the Oscar's are going to air. This gives all the libs and conservatives in Hollywood the chance to preach their jingoistic rhetoric to the enlightened masses. I gar-un-teeeee you that as soon as the ceremonies start, Tom Cruise will be out there making some 'give peace a chance' or 'Rah-Rah USA' speech.

I'm not saying that I agree with one side or the other, but don't think for a second that the celebrities won't use the Oscars as a sounding board to preach their own personal opinions.

Razorblade,
When you're right, you're right. And you, you are always right.

Im not so sure I want to watch the Oscars anymore, its gonna end up being a preachfest. And I dont want to hear any of it. I can spend all day for weeks thinking about war and terrorism, but when I turn on the Oscars I want to hear about movies and Steve Martin making fun of Russell Crowe. I for one, dont give a damn what Tom Cruise's opinions on Iraqi oil are.

Oh poor Nicole Kidman isnt gonna come to the show. Spoiled, rich bitch. Everbody else has to go to work during the war. If I told my boss that I wasnt gonna show up to work because there was a war going on, he would laugh and tell me not to show up after the war ended either.

I've been reading about war in the news for the past year and a half. If it comes down to a choice between watching CNN or watching the Oscars, it'll be an easy choice to make for me...
