Here's one that sounds odd but is absolutely true:

Fritz Lang directs Marilyn Monroe (Clash by Night)

Other good ones that I remember offhand:

Oliver Stone directs John Candy (JFK)

Martin Scorsese directs John Goodman (Bringing out the Dead)

Francis Ford Coppla directs Robin Williams (Jack)

Wes Craven directs Meryl Streep (Music of the Heart)

David Fincher directs Gwyneth Paltrow (Seven)

Steven Spielberg directs Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan)

Milos Forman directs Jim Carrey (Man on the Moon)

And the oddest of them all:

Oliver Stone directs Rodney Dangerfield (Natural Born Killers)

Here's another odd one I found:

Kevin Smith directs James Brolin (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).

I can swear I saw him in the ending scene in the Hollywood backlots near the end

To this day I find it fascinating how a man like Paul Verhoeven, with his very fat accent, directed Arnie in Total Recall, with his very fat accent, and actually made something out of it dialogue-wise..

I know this may be straying from the topic a little but i loved the studio/director combo of :

Walt disney presents...a David Lynch Film

for The Straight Story, that was excellent.

This is the one I came in to post. Who would have thought that pairing would actually work? But it did...

It amazes me that any director would want to hire Keanu Reeves.

I definitely agree with the pick of Wes Craven directing Meryl Streep... especially to an Oscar nomination!!!!

And I'm totally out of left field on this one, but I still can't put my finger on what I find weird about Steven Spielberg directing Whoopin Goldberg in The Color Purple!!! It just seems like an odd pairing to me. It's one of my all time favorites, and Steven and Whoopi are two of my all time favorites in their respective fields, but it seems weird to me.

What about Milos Forman and Courtney Love?

They've worked not only once but TWICE.

That's actually why Brittanny Murphy get interested on the film. That's a very strange couple.

I just saw Punch-Drunk Love. Adam Sander in an art flick by Paul Thomas Anderson? Will he do more dramatic roles for other reputable directors, be they Serious Artists (TM) or just good craftsmen? I really hope so. Rumor has it he's signed up for Michael Mann's next film, a thriller costarring Tom Cruise.

I'd love to see him in one of Oliver Stone's political films. What kind of character would he play and how would he fit in the story? The mind boggles.

Robert Zemeckis directing Crispin Glover in the trilogy of BTTF is pretty weird.

Also:

Zemeckis directs Alfonso Arau in Romancing the Stone, who directs Woody Allen in Picking up the Pieces,.

And Woody directing Leonardo DiCaprio (Celebrity), Jason Biggs (Anything Else), Hugh Grant (Small Time Crooks), etc...

Adam Sandler auditioned for Michael Mann's Collateral. But Mann went with Jamie Foxx to star opposite Tom Cruise.

Oh yeah, and that would be sweet to see Sandler in an Oliver Stone movie.

I gotcha all beat:

Martin Scorsese directing Gwen Stefani in the upcoming movie The Aviator.

And I'm pretty sure I heard a while ago something about Quentin Tarantino wanting Adam Sandler for an upcoming movie of his. Now that's a strange and interesting combo. Even wierder than Sandler with Paul Thomas Anderson was.
