I was just wondering what everyone thought of REM. I'm in high school, so no one else I know has ever even heard of them. I, on the other hand, think they're awesome. Especially their 80's-early 90's stuff. (although Reveal was good too)

Reveal is MINDBLOWING! I'm not really a big fan of anything from the past decade, or so... I took a chance on reveal and its really one of their finer albums.

Document is their masterwork, imo.. Haven't heard Murmur, though.. apparently its really really REALLLLLY fucking cool.

REM for me are one of the most consistant bands in the world right now, they have made so many great albums and songs over the last 15 -20 years, have been lucky enough to see them perform live a couple of times and they blew me away.

Well, hailing from their early days myself, I can say that they were awesome. I haven't heard their new stuff, but they've been making great music for a long time now.

I have all of REMs albums but for some strange reason my favourite is the extremely underrated (in my opinion) New Adventures In Hi-Fi. Just crank the volume on that one and it'll blow you away. I'll admit it was a bit of a hard sell. Took a good few listens before it hit me. But when it did it hit me like a goddamn ten pound sledge hammer right between the ears. It's a seriously underrated album. Seriously!!!

All the rest are cool too. Reveal was a damn fine collection of songs.

R.E.M. rules. They're one of the few bands from the 80s who have managed to stay relevant. My favorite album is probably Monster.

I'm going to see REM this year...I love 'em...at T in the Park...I can't wait...

"stand in the place where you live....think about direction, wonder why you haven't now"

Stand (or as my Dad calls it 'And She Was - Mark II', the best song Talking Heads never sang)

I hope the song list goes like this...

Daysleeper
What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
At My Most Beautiful
Radio Free Europe
Stand
Man On The Moon
Losing My Religion
Sweetness Follows
Drive
Shiny Happy People (hey, hey, I want the shiny people standing over her, the happy people over here, ok?)
Sidewinder Sleeps
The Great Beyond
E-bow The Letter
Everybody Hurts

Reigh...

I saw them at Stirling Castle a couple of years ago and it was a stunning performance. I don' t think you need worry about whether they will finish off with It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). I think that's a given.

I spent time to learn the verses of It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

...am I a freak of nature, or utterly unoriginal? :(

Possibly one of the greatest bands that have ever existed.

there are very few artists who can say they are on a par with REM. they are simply amazing. they have been writing amazing, moving and beautiful music for pretty much all of my life.

i love that band :)

I'm definitely gonna try to get tickets as soon as the American tour dates are announced. My favorite of their albums is Automatic For The People.

Consistently great...

You can't fault them.

I actually sang "Tongue" as part of my BA Hons (performing arts), every other bugger sang a show-tune.

Yep, I looked like a complete tit.

Wow, talk about feeling old! I can't believe the time has come where high school students have no idea who R.E.M. is! It just seems so weird... Consider yourself special, Raymond!

REM is one of the best groups i've ever heard!I started listening to them when i was twelve years old so you understand that i could never find other people at my age having heard REM!Now i'm 17 and that still goes on...Man, is kind of annoying everyone listens to stupid Britney Spears and other awful singers and groups.
There is one thing sure about you:you've got good taste!

I'm asking myself what the title of one specific songs of theirs is. I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to listen to anything that's widely considered good so can you guys tell me what song I'm talking about?

All I can come up with is the first line of lyrics which goes "Hey Kid....good to go" or something. I'm sure you'll be laughing anyway 'cause that song seems one of their most popular. Dig that song.

I believe you're talking about DRIVE. It's on Automatic For The People. If you like that song, I suggest you check out the album. It also has Man On The Moon and Everybody Hurts. Also, the lyric you referred to is "Hey Kids... Rock and Roll"
