Mike

I agree, I don't think the rounds should go "quite" as fast, even if they are so called "no-brainers" and just to get the round moving. I think the first one still should have been left open a little longer. I actually probably would have voted for GHOST SHIP, which doesn't look great but it looks alright, and it should at least be entertaining. I used to love JAWS and had seen it quite a few times. But then I watched it with my cousin last September because she had read the book but hadn't seen the movie. And it was not even close to being as good as I had remembered. It was actually sort of boring this time around. It's funny how much some movies can change over time and how they can become worse than they once were. Upon this viewing of JAWS, I'd have to give it a 6/10 (C+).

Anyway, for this match, I'm not quite sure. I watched DEEP BLUE SEA with my cousin after watching JAWS, and that wasn't nearly as fun as I had remembered it being. I had a blast in theaters with it and it was even fun when I saw it on video. But this time it wasn't that great, and was cheesier than I remembered it being. Of course, it was still more entertaining than JAWS. Actually, I don't know why I wasn't sure whether I should go with DEEP BLUE SEA or HALLOWEEN, because now that I think about it, HALLOWEEN is definitely better. The second one wasn't that great at all though, and was extremely cheesy and unrealistic. Parts 1, 4, 5, and 7 (H20) are definitely the best.

Most of you won't find it scary because it's without a doubt very dated, but The Shining isn't scary either, plus there's so much more to The Exorcist than the "scary" parts.

And the demon's flashing face in The Exorcist IS one of the scariest and creepiest things I've ever seen in a movie

You too!? That's funny. The first (and only) time I saw it was with one of my friends and we both laughed a lot during it. It was pretty lame. I think I gave it a lower grade when I first saw it, but since I haven't seen it since, the thought of it isn't quite as horrible anymore. But it's definitely dated and not scary in the least. Maybe it was scary when it first came out, but now it's nothing better than a "B" horror flick. If that movie would have came out today, I highly doubt it would have been as well received. Of course, if it would have been made now, the effects wouldn't have been nearly as cheesy, which probably would have made it better. Hell, if a remake was to get made, I'm sure it would be better than the original. At least it would look better and wouldn't be quite as lame.

Pet Semetary used to scare the crap out of me as a kid, however I have watched it recently and it is quite laughable. "I Know...." is the better film!

Mike
03-18-2003, 12:26 AM
Pet Sematary (9/10 or A-) used to scare the shit out of me. For the longest time I would try to watch it, but would never get very far, even watching it with other people. And even before seeing the whole movie, it would give me fucking nightmares. The atmosphere was great and so creepy. It used to be where a cloudy day pretty much couldn't go by without me thinking of Pet Sematary. But then back in fall of 99' I finally forced myself to face my fears and watch it with a group of friends at my Halloween party. And I must say, even though it was scary, it wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be and it wasn't as scary as the bits and pieces I had watched before. Then another year later I watched it again on one sunday in the fall. This time it really wasn't as scary at all. Some parts were actually kind of cheesy. But no matter, the subject matter still manages to creep the crap out of me. Hell, even the extremely cheesy but fun sequel managed to creep me out a couple of times, even while watching it with friends and making fun of it. I'm so disappointed I haven't heard anything about a third one getting made since fall of 2001. I really want to see a third one. I think one could definitely work. And I'm not talking some cheesy STV sequel, I'm talking a real sequel with great atmosphere and bone-chilling scares. Anyway, I wouldn't mind owning the first one, and even the second one, but I'm too scared to have them in my house. It even gets to me just looking at the cover art for it. But at least I've gotten over getting scared just from hearing the title. My friends used to try and creep me out just by saying the title because they knew it scared me. But now it doesn't bother me as much.

That being said, I must say, I thought the first I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (9/10 or A-) was excellent. After SCREAM and the first "I KNOW," the teen slashers went downhill. But I still loved the first I KNOW." It had excellent cinematography, one hell of an excellent chase sequence (even if it was similar to the one used in the original Halloween, which was also very effective), some fun kills, and a nice "serious" tone. I think the main reason "I KNOW" wasn't quite as loved as "SCREAM" is because it wasn't a comedy/horror flick, it was more of a drama/horror flick. But personally, I thought the the serious tone worked well.

Anyway, I'd give them both the same rating, but since I'm sure Pet Sematary will win, I'm giving my vote to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!

Poltergeist definitely hasn't aged well. I saw it a couple of years ago and it really isn't that great. It was kind of lame. One part managed to scare me though, even though I saw it coming the whole time. It was that damn clown. That part made the whole movie worth sitting through. However, I wouldn't watch it again. It's just not scary at all, other than the part I mentioned. I'm sure it would have been scary as a kid, but now it's not.

GINGERS SNAPS (8/10 or B+) kicked ass! The first time I saw it I wasn't sure what to think of it. It really depressed me and kind of ruined my night. It wasn't because it was a bad movie, it was because it's a very moody movie. It definitely wasn't a good idea to watch it with a friend, because then we were both in bad moods for most of the night and didn't get along too well. But then one day this last summer I saw it again and liked it even more. And then the next day I saw it again and by this time I loved it. And then I watched it again this last fall with my cousin and I still loved it. I just wasn't ready for it the first time I watched it. I wasn't prepared for such a dark, morbid, moody, and depressing flick.

Anyway, GINGER SNAPS easily gets my vote! Even if POLTERGEIST is older, GINGER SNAPS is still better!!!

Man Porche, I can't believe you haven't seen THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS... Anyway, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is of course the better film and I'd give it the higher rating. But the "ELM STREET" series is so damn much fun and is my favorite 80's horror series. I have so many memories of watching them with my cousin and making fun of them. I've also watched them with other family members and friends. The series is very dear to my heart ;).

That being said, I have to go with A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, which technically may not be the "better film," but it means more to me and is more enjoyable. I could watch "ELM STREET" more than I could watch THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and I'd pick "ELM STREET" over SOTL any day. "ELM STREET" is just more fun to watch!

Yeah, it's really too bad A Nightmare On Elm Street had to go against something like The Silence Of The Lambs during the first round. It deserved to at aleast win one match in this tournament anyway. Two classics together in the first round, it's just too unfair ;). I think A Nightmare On Elm Street should have been paired up with something like Bloody Murder or Eye See You.

Definitely THE RING!

It was creepy, engrossing, and hypnotic... It never fails to suck me in and doesn't let go until the end. Even after seeing it six times, my eyes are still glued to the screen whenever I watch it. It gets better with each viewing too. It didn't scare the hell out of me or anything, but it never fails to make my stomach uneasy every single time I watch it. It had the perfect atmosphere, pace, and perfect everything. It was a very well made horror film and one of the best movies of the year. The absolute perfect word to describe this movie is HYPNOTIC! A very superb film! Naomi Watts was absolutely perfect and I'm very happy nobody else played the character.

I despise SIGNS! It was so LAME and extremely OVERRATED. So far all M. Night Shyamalan movies have been disappointments and very overrated. He's absolutely nothing special and he doesn't deserve the praise he gets. He's over-hyped and I can't stand the guy. His cameo in SIGNS annoyed me. SIGNS sucked, THE RING rocked! Thank god M. Night Shyamalan didn't make THE RING remake, or it probably would have sucked... The choice between THE RING and SIGNS couldn't be easier. It's like choosing between AMERICAN BEAUTY and STEALING HARVARD. I would never give SIGNS my vote...
