Okay, as the ever tactful Alan Partridge once said...
There's the old image of Leprechauns, shamrock, Guinness, horses running through council estates, toothless simpletons, people with eyebrows on their cheeks, badly tarmacced drives – in this country, men in platform shoes being arrested for bombings, lots of rocks, and Beamish. I think people are saying "yes, there’s more to Ireland than this". A good slogan for the tourist board – "Dere’s more to Oireland dan dis."
He's got ONE thing right...there IS more to Ireland "dan dis"...there's GREAT bloody music for one thing...
So which band/musician has got the luck of the Irish with 'em TODAY...???
There's PLENTY to choose from folks, and whilst you're at it...feel free to discuss, debate...and the rest.
So, have a vote...go on, have a vote!!!

I went with U2. I've loved all of their albums and they never cease to entertain me.

I hope you posted this just to use the line "Shamrock N' Roll"
That made my day.
U2. Even though the wankers sold out with all of that hands that built America jive. Haha. I love that song.

Nothing spells drunken St. Patricks day like:
The Pogues.

Yeah, it's my saint's day! (no, my real name is NOT RenHoek, ya know? ;)) Stay away from Beamish 'cause Guinness is so much better. ah, who cares? Just get drunk! :D
...and I vote for my role model Van Morrisson, the old misanthrope and carouser!
Happy St. Patrick's Day and Cheers! http://i.imdb.com/Photos/CMSIcons/emoticons/extra/cheers.gif

I'd love to be able to take the credit for that...
So I will.
;)
Anyway, notch one up for Ash...I think U2 might have this one in the bag so lets give those cheeky indie kids a nod.

Begorrah! You lot are always after me lucky charms!
What? Why's everyone always laugh when I say dat?
I vote for Shane MacGowan. The Pogues are fucking reckless genius at it's best!

I like U2 a lot, so they get my vote.

Well, I'll be predictable...I voted for U2. But Thin Lizzy is really up there for me too. Jailbreak is such a kickass song, I literally spazz out when I hear it. It's not a pretty sight.
Happy St. Paddy's Day! I don't have an ounce of Irish in me, but I'll have a brew anyway. :D

Hey Morgana! Want some Irish in ya? Mom's maiden name is Farrell. That's right, I'm half Irish. Open invitation.;)
I voted other, as right now I'm very partial to the Chieftains, and have a soft spot for a local Irish band called Gaelic Storm. Good shite!

Taking a break from the festivities to weigh in here.
And, folks... I gotta tell ya, it can ONLY be Shane McGowan and the glorious Pogues. RUM, SODOMY AND THE LASH just may be the ultimate "modern" Irish album. If it's not, then it's IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD... also by the Pogues.
Shane embodies the Irish struggle and melancholy like no one's business. The guy is a damn train wreck, but, oh so compelling and insightful. A most tortured, talented, timeless soul. I defy anyone to listen to these albums and NOT get a contact Guinness, Jameson, or Bushmills DRUNK on.
Yes, he's a notorious drinker, but, a great majority of his songs drip with the struggles and the "troubles"..
And now, in honor of the band and the DAY, here's a sample of his rogue, poetic chaos.
The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn
McCormack and Richard Tauber are singing by the bed
There's a glass of punch below your feet, and an angel at your head...
There's devils on each side of you, with bottles in their hands
You need one more drop of poison, and you'll dream of foreign lands....
When you pissed yourself in Frankfurt and got syph down in Cologne
And you heard the rattling death trains as you lay there all alone
Frank Ryan bought you whiskey at a brothel in Madrid
And you decked some fucking blackshirt who was cursing all the yids
At the sick bed of Cuchulainn we'll kneel and say a prayer
And the ghosts are rattling at your door and the Devil's in the chair
And in the Euston tavern you screamed it was your shout
But they wouldn't give you service so you kicked the windows out
They took you out into the street and kicked you in the brain
So you walked back through the bolted door and did it all again
At the sick bed of Cuchulainn we'll kneel and say a prayer
And the ghosts are rattling at your door and the Devil's in the chair
You remember that foul evening when you heard the banshees howl
There was drunken lousy bastards singing "Billy is in the bowl"
They took you up to midnight mass and left you in the lurch
So you tossed a button in the plate and spewed up in the Church
Now you'll sing a song of liberty for blacks and Paks and jocks
And they'll take you from this place you're in and stick you in a box
They'll take you down to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back up and shout "WE'LL HAVE ANOTHER ROUND!!!"
At the graveside of Cuchulainn we'll kneel around and pray
And God is in his heaven, and Billy's down the bay!
Yeah, a rollicking ditty there. Ferchrissakes, just listening to it sends your guts reeling. Such a tremendous band. If any of you have yet to experience the Pogues, do yourself a favor and check them on out. Fabulous.
PS- Praise to: BLACK 47 (New York's own), The Prodigals, The Wolff Tones, The Dropkick Murphy's, Paul Brady, Clannad, Christy Moore, Carter Burwell, Eleanor McEvoy, The Waterboys, The Saw Doctors, Leahy, Mary Black, Altan, Michael O' Sullebhain, Cherish The Ladies, John McGann, John Faulkner.... and every other child of Banbaa who ever put it down for us to enjoy.
SLAINTE!

For band, I go with U2, though they don't really have Irish melodies.
For best Irish music, i pick the Pogues.
Btw, im half Irish.....wooohooo! I can't drink, but I think I'll have me a cup of Rosey Lee.

Grebby, you hopeless whore. I can't wait to see how you proffer yourself on...say, Administrative Professionals Day! lol
Just kidding, darling. After you're done putting the Irish into Reigh and Quoth, I'm afraid there won't be any left for me. So pencil me in for Administrative Professionals Day, ok? ;) :D

It isn't really St Patrick's Day any more but I still voted anyway, I couldn't miss out on a debate like this! :p
Anyways, I voted for The Cranberries, the only half decent band in that list (I loathe U2 with a vengeance...)!

Shag! I didn't see Ash there so I change my vote. I vote for the Angel Interceptors for a number of reassons. 1) I own all the albums and 2)I'm desperate to meet that bird Charlotte and fret over her middle-eight. And after that, then I'd like to make love to her :D
