Well, you'll wanna kick lucas in the nuts after you read this, but here's the way it is:

No Star Wars DVD will be produced until all six movies are complete. This is currently scheduled for 2006 sometime. They may or may not be sold separatly, but there will be a big 6-movie super-set released.

By then, blue laser DVD - AKA - HD-DVD (High Definition Digital Video Disc), is supposed to be the big thing. Be that true, Lucas has hinted at not releasing them on regular DVD at all, and just skipping straight to the bluee laser DVD format if that's what is 'the thing' at the time as technology buffs suggest it may be. No, your regular DVD player will not play HD-DVD discs. Personally, I don't believe that. I think that since there are over 3 or 4 million DVD players out there already, it's not likely that everyone is going to willing trash them in 5 years for something new. That's just my opinion.

If you really really really really really can't live without a Star Wars DVD set any longer, there is an alternative.

Remember Laser Discs? They never caught on in North America, but the caught on in Japan (big time). So, LucasFilm realeased a Laser Disc trilogy (and episode I) in Japan. DVD is digital picture AND sound. Laser disc is analog picture and digital sound. Some nice Hong Kong movie pirates got the laser disc set, and copied them off to computer hard drives, then started stamping out DVD's using the Laser Disc quality data. Basically, the picture is not as good as DVD, but CERTAINLY better then VHS, and you can enjoy the AC-3 Dolby Digital surround sound in perfect digital quality if your willing to spend some bucks on some ~illegal~ bootleg copies. Simply go to www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com) and do a search for "Star Wars DVD", then try and find yourself the best possible deal.

back in the day, I bought a Laserdisc player, thinking this was the next level in home movie entertainment, Fuck, was I ever wrong. The laser discs offered incredible picture, great sound, except for one thing, they never caught on. christ was I pissed. Longer movies have to be put on two sides of the same disc, which was equally frustrating. Well, I actually did buy the Star Wars Laser Disc box set, it set me back like 300 bucks and was well worth the money. It's a terrific set and I can only pray that Lucas releases the same set on DVD, then and only then will he appease the truest of hardcore star wars fans, like myself. I sold my laserdisc player awhile ago to recoup some of the money I lost but still kept the set. If anyone wants to buy the set from me, e-mail me and we'll work out a deal.

'drew, still praying that DVD's don't fade out in like 2 years.

Drew. Put your laser discs on eBay if you want to sell them. There's so many star wars freaks looking ofr them you'll get a decent buck for the set.

On a separate note, DVD's aren't going to fade out. Manufacturers are doing EVERYTHING to ensure that. The Sony DVD factory lost MILLIONS UPON MILIONS of dollars last year because they're actually selling players cheaper then they can fford to make them (seriously). The sales passed 3 million units in North America alone before last christmas, and I'm guessing it probably much higher by now. Laser disc never found it's niche because the prices stayed very high, and no body likes flipping discs mid-movie, not to mention they were the size of a man-hole cover. DVD will certainly be the next 'thing', just as CD's replaced cassettes.

thanks for tips and for the reassurance. I dunno, I got burnt for like 800 dollars for the laserdisc player, but like you said, DVD's seem to be the next standard in home entertainment.

I've never tried selling anything on E-bay, but I'll definitely give it a shot.

ebay rules. I never rent movies anymore. I buy the DVD, watch it, then sell it on ebay. Since I'm in Canada, and the exchange rate is $1.50:$1.00, I can buy a flick for say $23 to $25 CAD, watch it, and sell it for $15 to $16 US (or about $22 to $24 CAD). I essentially get to see all the movies I want on DVD for free. I keep the ones I like, and auction off the ones I hate and pretty much get all my money back. Plus if you're a jerk like me, you charge an extra $2 or $3 shipping on top of what it actually costs to ship it, and make a profit while seeing everything for free. Not a bad deal when you consider rentals cost $4 to $5 a shot and you have to go through the hassle of getting it back before 7:00pm the next day or they charge for a whole damn day on top of the original rip-off price. Think of it as a 2 week free rental with a $25 deposit. /ubb/smile.gif

I agree with Stefan. Laser disc never caught on because people just didn't like those big discs. DVD will is definitely catching on. The prices are coming down quick and people love all the extra features. You can get almost any title on DVD now (except Star Wars). I take that back, you can get any title that sold more than 50 VHS copies. Many more are being released each week. Heck 8 Woody Allen movies are being released on 7/4.

I don't even have a DVD player yet, but I've got The Matrix and Bug's Life on DVD.
