7/10
"The Safety of Objects" is enormously entertaining for the same reason that it doesn't work on the level it wants to (that is a "deep" character study of those folks out in the 'burbs)
THERES TOO MANY CHARACTERS!
This does help the 2 hours zip along at a great pace and the film is pretty decent, but it certainly doesn't leave the impact it thinks it does.
Basically, the film is about 4 suburban families (some of the neighbors are Glenn Close, Patricia Clarkson, Joshua Jackson, Dermot Mulroney, Mary Kay Place, PANIC ROOM's Kristen Stewart; whom i loved, Jessica Campbell; Tammy from ELECTION, and a bunch of others, including non-neighbor gardener Timothy Olyphant) They all have their problems: unhappiness with their job, sons in a coma, pain in the ass ex-husband, bored with thier marriage, dark secrets, sex with barbies, kidnapped children, ya know, everyday stuff.
(semi-spoilerish)
Lots of revelations ensue and all the characters eventually make peace with life by the end. Yet the film is no way near as obnoxious as it sounds (crappy American Beauty rip-off) but it manages to pull it off by many strong performances and the characters for the most part are fun to watch. The film has its fair share of problems, the aforementioned barbie sex is way too random to fit in here, but i chuckled so i let it slide. Many parts of the film are implausible or highly unlikely to happen in your regular suburb, but its very entertaining and worth a look.
