Hey, BadCoverVersion don't you mean Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire? I suppose the Byrds might have covered it being as they were a folk/rock band. (Great song!)
My pick is War by Edwin Starr (also covered well by Bruce Springsteen)

Jim McGuinn, Barry McGuinn, Roger McGuinn, Barry McGuire...It all goes a bit pear-shaped when you actually start debating it.
Who SUNG it first, I couldn't tell you...but contrary to popular belief there IS a Byrds version...I've actually got the bloody thing on an old Gram Parsons mix-tape that somebody gave to me a while back.
I cannot find the Byrds version on an actual album.... I've tried, but alas...my efforts have been unsuccessful.
The first time McGuire performed live he was singing alongside The Byrds, so it does make sense in a way.
Anyway, regardless of all this malarkey...neither The Byrds or McGuire actually wrote the song (that would be Pf Sloan)...and I've heard more than a few perfectly decent versions in my time, The Turtles' take on the track isn't too shabby.
Anyway, now I'm just rambling on and I'm totally fucking inarticulate this evening...
So...anyway...;)

I'm not anti-war, so I don't have a favorite anti-war song. However, there are plenty of songs that put me in the mind frame for war. :D

Motorhead - 1916 ~ a chilling song about war.
16 years old when I went to war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Counting my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled
And I died & I never did get any older,
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line,
Is a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered,
And we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we fought and we brawled
And we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
A thirst for the Hun,
We were food for the gun,and that's
What you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry,
And he sank to his knees, coughing blood
As he screamed for his mother
And I tell by his, side,
And that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud
And the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother
And she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault
And I wasn't to blame,
The day not half over
And ten thousand slain,and now
There's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier.

So what? You've probably never fought in a war either. So why have a favorite war song, and not a favorite anti-war song? Do you just not listen to anti-war songs, or is it a matter of principle for you to not choose? Just asking, because, well, I like many of the patriotic songs that have been coming out. I think my favorite is the Merle Haggard one.
Anyway my favorite anti-war song:

I'd say John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Edwin Starr and U2 pretty much sum up my knowledge of anti-war songs. Which means that to me, they're the greatest ones...

Actually, I haven't been in a war. However, I'm not against US troops fighting for our freedom and for other people's. I hear all these liberal's and hippies talking about how we don't have the right to be in Iraq. Ok, we'll just leave and let that maniac keep murdering and torturing people until the day the dies. I'm not an advocate for war, but it's gonna happen. War is unavoidable. Personally, I don't think the U.S. goes to war hard enough. I mean we go and we fight, but all the people we've ever fought break the rules of the Geneva Convention the minute it starts. All the while, we're sitting back, following the rules. I say give us back flame throwers and maybe invent a fully automatic weapon that shoots nails. Maybe if we'd show these people we fight why we're the world's super power, they'd get the message and stop fucking with us. And as for me never being in a war, I'm pretty sure nobody who ever wrote an anti-war song was either. Especially Jon Lennon.
Anyway my favorite anti-war song: :D
