View Full Version : DVDs = Too Expensive?

Learning something from my Scream 3 fiasco, last week I went out and bought a cheap $170 Toshiba DVD Player. My main problem with the format is the fact that many of the movies are way too expensive.

Granted, I'm mostly into Special Editions (I recently bought the Halloween 5: Limited Edition of 15,000 copies off of Amazon.com for $40 counting shipping), and into out-of-print DVDs (The 30,000 copy only Halloween: Limited Edition, which features two cuts on one DVD), but several are too expensive.

For instance, take the Independence Day: Special Edition. $39.99 at my local Wal-Mart. Huh? I can get the VHS for $9, and the only real difference is the fact that Randy Quaid doesn't fly his crop duster in the end.

That's the only example I'm using 'cuz I'm tired as hell; but aren't these DVDs just a tad too expensive?? /ubb/tongue.gif

You have to realize though that DVD's are still the minority - their in demand. Give it a year or so and eventually you will see DVD's for cheaper. I'm with ya though - they do put a sting in your back pocket. I just rent a lot of DVD's from Netflix.com.

The first week DVD's come out to own, the store sets them really cheap, so they're on sale. Then after a week or so, they drag it up to it's normal price, usually about 25$. If you are not a member of Sam's Club go there!! They have really cheap DVDs. Fight Club which was originally 35$, is now 17.99! Now that's cheap! They don't really have any old movies, but all the new movies coming out they have.

I think if you want some cheaper DVDs.China is the best place...Only 10 yuan for 1 DVD...In USA$,it's just about 1.1 bucks!!It's also new...If you will come for vacation or something, don't forget to prepare a big box to hold them... /ubb/smile.gif

Really? $1.1?!? Are you talking stalls or stores?

I heard that they were as cheap as about $5 for something like Armageddon and other bog standard non-special edition DVDs, brand new. In Tokyo the equivalent would cost you about $3-5. Here in the UK it cost us the equivalent of about $40 but Region 2 DVDs can be some lame!

Over here in the UK, DVD's cost between £14.99 and £19.99. Not quite sure what that works out in in dollars!
Now then, recently i bought The Exorcist for £17.99. Not only does it have interviews, trailers, tv spots, storyboards and an hour long documentry plus trailers for other movies. But it also has both widescreen and full screen versions!! It is more than worth the money. I also bought Armageddon. Excellent "Popcorn" movie, but bugger all extras!! And for this i payed £19.99!!
Definately over priced. The movie companys may wafle on about better picture and sound quality, but to pay double the norm and no extras in inexcusable!! The sooner some production companys pull their fingers out and start taking advantage of DVD's the better.
