i was watching Braveheart on DVD today and noticed i hade a choice between LetterBox and WideScreen, i was 1/2 way through the movie and was watching it in Letter Box and switched it to WideScreen. In Letter Box there was two thick Black bars on the top and bottom, when i switched it to widescreen there where also to bars but thinner and the picture seemed stretched, and anyone explain this?

Who cares? I don't give a crap...as long as it isn't pan & scan or full screen. Letterbox or Widescreen, as long as I get the full picture that was filmed by the director...that's why I started buying DVD in the first place...

Ok smartass...the difference between letterbox and widescreen is ASPECT RATIO...ASPECT RATIO is the dimension in which the film is shown on a screen...letterbox is usually 1:85:1 whereas widescreen is usually 1:33:1...most widescreen DVDs are ENHANCED for 16x9 televisions or as some people call them WIDESCREEN televisions. Most people don't have WIDESCREEN televisions so the picture appears STRETCHED...with a WIDESCREEN television there would be NO BARS...and I assume you don't have a WIDESCREEN television...don't have a COW man...

Some further information:

1,33:1 ratio is normal TV and Widescreen TV is around 1,75:1. Letterbox format which is the REAL widescreen format is either 1,85:1 or 2,35:1.

American movies are mostly shot on 1,85:1 and European films are in general 1,66:1. 2,35:1 is usually used only in big budget american films. I think it's the most visually attractive ratio.
