Hi guys, I was recently made moderator of the DVD forum, so I figured I'd let know a little about me. I'm a student, studying psychology, love movies, Al Pacino, chinese food, long romantic walks along .....nah. (enough about me)
I've been around this board for awhile and nobody ever brought it up, so I guess I will.
What kind of DVD players do you all own? What movies do you own?
I own a Toshiba SD-1200, the cheapest of the line, it was all I could afford.
As for DVDs, I'm the proud owner of Fight Club, Se7en, the Matrix, T2, the Abyss, Boogie Nights (Platinum Series), Boiler Room, Rounders, Braveheart, Jaws, Being John Malkovich, Saving Private Ryan, Scarface /ubb/wink.gif, The Insider /ubb/wink.gif and Any Given Sunday /ubb/wink.gif.

I own a Pioneer DV-F727 300+1 DVD/CD changer (it cuts down on storage space and lets you put the film titles in) and a Panasonic DVD LV75 Portable DVD/CD player aka "PalmTheater" (great for work and trips). Way too many DVDs and Videos to list, but that is only because I am a compulsive shopper who blows all his money.

Hey, good question. I honestly don't know much about DVD players but mine is a Toshiba SD-2109. It's done the job so far. Movie-wise, I've been given all of these as gifts from friends and family over the past year:
SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, & UNCUT
THE MUMMY
TAXI DRIVER
ANALYZE THIS
DARK CITY
GO
NIGHTMARE BEFORE X-MAS
RESERVOIR DOGS
THE MATRIX
PAYBACK

Hey JoBlo, it's funny you should mention the Toshiba SD-2109...I just bought this DVD version of the old arcade game "Dragon's Lair" (you play it using your DVD player remote) and it has a message on the back that says "this disc will not operate on the Toshiba SD-2109". I wonder why Dirk the Galant won't work on yours? oh...it's just as well..

whoa, Dragon's Lair? That's a crazy old school video game. When I was an arcade rat, like 10 years ago, that game was state of the art. If I remember correctly, it had cartoon quality graphics and you have to choose your fate. I sucked big time at it, Dirk always got killed, eaten, burned, etc, etc.
Brock, where'd you buy it? This is the first time I've heard of video games on DVD's.

Drew, I've got a PC version of the game lying around here somewhere. I'll spot you it the next time we run into each other. Incidentally Brock, what's up with buying video games that you play with your REMOTE?!?
Dude...buy a playstation or some computer games, man!! Whasssup!!!! /ubb/smile.gif
Incidentally, I love that game.

I bought the "Dragon's Lair" DVD video game at Best Buy. It was in the Miscellaneous DVD section next to Family films aka Disney, Black Beauty, Never Cry Wolf, etc...They also have these really stupid interactive DVD games/movies where you have to decide what happens next in the film...they are supposed to be party games...
I own a playstation but with a game like "Dragon's Lair" you don't really have to do much but push up,down, left or right every once in a while...it is more of an animated movie/fantasy game than anything...I love when he turns into the skeleton...

Oh, c'mon, JoBlo. Recommend a GOOD system. Super Nintendo, which you can get for around $35, kicks the shite out of PlayStation. Nintendo 64 fulfills your gaming needs, too /ubb/smile.gif And don't question me on this crap, I've been playing video games since I was 1-year-old (Gotta love 1986). Take what THIS doctor ordered :P

Ah my boy, you were way too young to appreciate the finer video games from back in the day. I was raised on a healthy diet of Atari 2600 and Colecovision.("Back in my day, we had 16 colours to choose from, none of this 100 million polygons!") They don't make them like they used to, I'm not sure if that's necessarily a bad thing.
It's interesting that you brought it up, the subject of video games. I haven't bought a video game system since the Super Nintendo but I'm eagerly anticipating the release of Playstation 2. I think I might drop the 300 US dollars for this bad boy, which might I add, PLAYS DVDS! Looks unreal.
ANTBond007, I'm sure this is a rhetorical question, but have you ever played Goldeneye for N64? Hands down most addictive game ever made. I spent many sleepness nights playing fatal four way with friends, can't get enough.

Playstation is definitely the coolest system to date...
...except for my Intellevision gaming system...it has the classic game "BONK" where you are a cavemen/boy who hits people with his head...many other great titles available...
...Playstation 2 will surpass both and DVDs to boot...just like you said!

Uck...PlayStation2. This "badboy" is nothing more than an overpriced coaster. How do I know? I slapped down $600 for the import and Tekken Tag Tournament. Worst $600 I ever spent. Not only is the thing slow, the game had graphics that were worse than Dreamcast's Soul Calibur (we're in clipping heaven, boys!). Thank you, I'll wait for the $199 GameCube /ubb/smile.gif...not to mention the fact that Nintendo's first party games are 100x better than Sony's....
As for GoldenEye...yeah, I have it. It's addictive as heck, and Perfect Dark is even better.
Brock, PlayStation the coolest system ever? Have you ever played a system before PlayStation? For every Metal Gear Solid (which I beat night #1 on a rental, BTW), you get a Spice World, Final Fantasy VII (By far the worst in the series; even below SNES' FF: Mystic Quest), Final Fantasy VIII (Not bad, but BOOOOOORING), Rosco McQueen: Firefighter Extreme, Blasto, any NFL GameDay; hell, anything developed by Sony themself....etc. Thank you, I'll take MSX2's Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, SNES' Final Fantasy VI, Harvest Moon, Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, Mortal Kombat 2, and Super Mario All-Stars, and N64's Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Super Mario 64, Killer Instinct Gold, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Harvest Moon 64 any day. Thank you, PlayStation sucks. 'nuff said. Now, where's my SNES.....

Ant-------- though I admit that Nintendo has grown up a little (perfect dark is an example), 90% of the games, are still targeted for 12 year olds, and thast's fine if your 12. I myself like the more older oriented games like-The Residen't Evil's, Metal Gear Solid (yea ok, you beat it in a day),The Tekken's (the best fighters ever!),and the Fear Effects. You can play your ''Mario Golf's'' all you wan't, but I'll stick with Resident Evil. And oh yea Ps2 won't cost 600 bucks,Sony isn't stupid (you are probably thinkig off how much it would cost in Japanese)

I have the Panasonic DVD-A320. Their second-from-the-top model. Their top model was a few thousand and seemed to be a little bit of overkill. It (mine) has the on-board DTS, and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder, and 6 channel discrete outputs - really coold feature. A TV way too big for my little living room (well, not like too big is possible), and crap-load of stereo, and a gazillion pounds of speaker. Wa-hoo. I've only been buying DVD's a couple months now, but I'm at 41 now, and I ain't typing them all.

I think N64 is a lot better than crappy playstation. Even though playstation has a lot more games and there’s more to choose from N64 is a lot better because I know it doesn’t have as many games as playstation but the games it does have are miles more playable than playstation games. I mean Zelda 64, perfect dark, Mario 64, Goldeneye and Mario kart are far more playable than any playstation game that get boring after little while and are really short.
Now keeping on topic, I don’t have a DVD player but I got one in my computer, which I link up to my TV. I have about 9 DVD’s (blade, stigmata, Austin powers 2, pulp fiction, seven etc) and Ive just started collecting horror/slasher movies on DVD.

These are the movies i would like to own on DVD when i get one:
Magnolia
Taxi Driver
2001: A Space Odyssey
Fight Club

Silent Bob

I have some RCA dvd palyer, pretty nice ($275) But I think why it was so expensive is because it gave me five free dvds: fools rush in, get shorty, the jackal, the mask, and analyze this. But i have been blowing money on dvds ever since in got the player in spring. here's my list. go, fight club, the matrix, magnolia 2dvd set, t2:ue tin, sleepy hollow, roemo must die, house on haunted hill, and i think i have some more, but they arent important enuff for me to mention them. I want: Evil Dead123, Scream Boxed Set, Toy Story: The Ultimate Playbox Boxed Set, Mission to mars, american physcho unrated, from dusk till dawn s.e, detriot rock city, final destination, silence of the lambs, se7en platnum series, and some other which i cannot also think of right now.

Screamer, no, PlayStation2 wil not cost $600. That's what I paid for the import (I got the Japanese PlayStation2 in April). The U.S. console will cost $300. As for the mature thing, yes, I like mature games, but they don't need to be mature for me to like them. Metal Gear Solid is fun, but Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is better (don't play MG2: Snake's Revenge for NES! The game is different!). As for Resident Evil...well, N64 already has Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil Zero is a GameCube launch game. BTW, also, don't get Resident Evil Survivor. The turd. I'm glad I just rented it. Anyway, back on the "mature" subject, I also enjoy lighthearted games. Bust-A-Move rules, as does every Mario game (minus the un-Nintendo developed "Mario Is Missing"). I like the offshoot sports titles primarily because they're fun, and even more of a blast to play with four friends. I'm telling you right now that the best multiplayer experience on the planet is a 4-way game of GoldenEye/Perfect Dark. Ah, a thought, as for the $600....check this:
PlayStation2: $299
One Controller: $39
Memory Card: $39
Video Game: $49
Multi-tap (assuming everyone has friends): $49
Total: $475
Uhh...charge it? /ubb/smile.gif

Doctor Drew, how are ya? Just wanted to fill you, et al, in on me and my new found affinity for DVD's. A month and a half ago, my better half (easily), bought me a JVC XV-521 DVD player for my B-day. She also went out of her way to let the balance of the family know so that they could grace me with some DVD's as gifts too...
I now own:
The Matrix
Platoon
Fight Club
The Fifth Element
It's a good start... I've already got a 200 plus VHS library that I feel kind of stupid replacing with DVD's at the moment.
Have you found your appreciation for certain movies to be higher than the average due to DVD's? I mean, take Supernova for example. I know most people hated this movie, but I rented the DVD - whatched it last night and thought it was pretty good. What's more is, I watched all the deleted scenes and gained an ever greater appreciation for the film. The opportunity to really see the director's vision - so to speak. Do you find similar scenarios with other movies? If so, which ones?

Howdy SirReel, sorry for replying so late, I hadn't noticed the topic was recently responded to...my bad.
Sorry to hear that your 200+ VHS collection has now become obsolete. /ubb/wink.gif If there's one beef I have with technology, it's knowing that whatever you buy will never be THE standard in home viewing. Even DVDs have a limited shelf life before something more spectacular and wonderful comes along. Last I heard, HD DVD's will be the standard in a few years.
In response to your question, yes, certain DVDs definitely only make me love the movie more, but usually for movies that I was crazy about to start with. Fight Club and T2: Ultimate Edition are two good examples, there's so much stuff to pore through and so much more you learn about the movies themselves, through commentaries and documentaries, that a good movie becomes even greater through the medium. That's just my take...
