Wow what a pleasant surprise this is, I came home from work tonight and discovered a sports conversation thread. Well announcers for sporting events can really enhance or destroy your enjoyment of the game, so my first foray into this awesome new category will be the best announcing teams in the history of sports.

Baseball

#1- Harry Caray/ Jimmy Piersall (White Sox tv- late '70s/early '80s) Man I wish I would have been older and been able to hear these two on a regular basis! I caught a game they did on ESPN Classic one night, and it was an absolute riot. These two odd-ball wacko's (Piersall literally was institutionalized) just clicked together like no others since or before. People weren't tuning in to see the White Sox (they were absolutely pitiful in the last few years of the Bill Veeck era), they were tuning in for Caray and Piersall's antics, the most entertaining team of announcer's ever. Piersall was eventually fired after his scathing comments went to far, and Caray headed across town to Wrigley, but for the few years they were together they were the absolute best!

#2- Steve Stone/ Harry Caray (Cubs baseball '80s/early '90s) As crazy as Piersall was, Stone is the ultimate straight man. Caray's overexuberance and Stone's wry wit and infinate knowledge of the game made them my modern day favorites. It wasn't until after Caray died however that Stone was really able to shine, Caray's mike hogging left Stone just hanging many times, but he is in my mind the best color man to ever grace the booth.

#3- Joe Garagiolla/ Vin Scully (NBC game of the week '80s) These two larger than life personalities always made Saturday afternoon baseball a must see event. They just clicked and seemed to always have a good time which made it enjoyable for the viewer.

Football

#1- John Madden/ Pat Summerall (CBS and FOX '80s and '90s) Sentimental favorites I guess. Madden is the ultimate average schmoe and fan who just happened to be in the booth. I guess it's just that common man image that attract's me to Madden (much the same as Caray) and his broadcast's. He appeal's to the everyday guy and I love it. Summerall was the perfect straight man for Madden and complimented him wonderfully.

#2- Brent Musburger/ Dick Vermeil (ABC late '80s early '90s) Before Vermeil left for his NFL comeback these two were the best college football pair around. Vermeil's consumate knowledge of the game and natural charisma made him one of the best color men I've heard. Musburger just has the voice and presence that make a telecast.

#3- Gary Dolphin/ Eddie Podalak (Iowa Hawkeye Radio Network) These two are the ultimate homer's, I always mute the sound on the tv and listen to these two. It's especially good during the 2:30 start's when Eddie's drunk, hehehehehe! Seriously though, they're really good.

Basketball

#1- Dick Vitale/ Keith Jackson, Brent Musburger, Brad Nessler, ect... (ESPN, ABC) Who else is it gonna be? No one can match Dickie V's exuberance and wealth of knowledge, no one else even register's in this category, Dickie V rules! PS: Billy Packer you suck pal! You have no business doing Big Ten basketball, go back to the ACC you homer!

Hockey

I don't watch it! HA!

Well that about wraps it up, let's hear your guy's choices.

Don't know much about the greatest announcers, but any tag team that doesn't include Tim McCarver is off to a good start (god, how I hate him; can't FOX get someone else to call the World Series?)...

I would have to say that for the most part announcers are really bad.

Any Chicago people ever listen to Ron Santo do the radio broadcast of Cub's games? Now I understand he has some health problems, so I dont want to go over the line joking about him, but this guy is really losing it. It's like half the time he doesnt even know where is.

Ex.
During one game last year, I turned on the radio and at first thought I had the wrong station. But then I realized it was just Santo talking about how many pairs of socks he usually brings with on a road trip.

Just a couple of weeks back during a spring training game, I turned on the radio to hear Santo talking about how he tried to make a grilled cheese sandwhich using english muffins in the toaster. I almost drove off the road I was laughing so hard. Thanks for the analysis Ron!

Ernie Harwell & Jim Price (Detroit TIgers)-Harwell is simply the greatest play by play man in history. He was even the first announcer inducted into the baseball hall of fame. Man I am going to miss him

Keith Jackson and Bob Griese-They worked good together. On U of M's title run a few years back it was great listening the Jackson rib Griese about his son Brian week after week.
