I'm hoping there's some people into English football especially with the end of the season being so exciting this year.
If so:
what team do you support?
why?
who's going to win the Premiership (bonus points if you say the toon ;) )?
My team's Newcastle because I'm a geordie, even though I'm exiled at uni :(
The last few games of the season should be a good laugh. My team have an outside shot (we have to play Man U and Arsenal have play Man U too), but we're looking at more Champion's League adventures.
I think Man U may do it though

I'm a fan of Chelsea myself.
Why? Not a clue, just have been as long as I can recall.
I sort of hope Arsenal will win it this year, I'm actually cheering for Newcastle to take it home, but it looks a bit unlikely. Actually, anyone but United winning it would be fine by me.

Words of wisdom... ANYONE but United! (or Liverpool)
I'm an Arsenal fan... why? Because when they lost the Uefa Cup final, in '94 I think it was, I felt sorry for them and started supporting them. Anyone remember that game? It was Arsenal- Real Saragoza or something, and they were 1-1, into extra time and at the last minute of extra time this guy shot from about 50 metres away and Seaman thought it was going out but it went it and they lost...
I think we might win the Premiership again this year, that is unless we play like we played in the last matches... I may be biased but I reckon we're the best team out there, it's just that we can't get the ball in the bloody net as much as we'd like.

Well I support Queen's Park (not QPR!). English teams that I like are Luton Town and Man U (Yes, I'm a glory-hunting cunt :D)
why?
I support Queen's Park as they are my local team, and I do actually go to the games (unlike most old firm badgers around here). I went to see Luton when they were playing up here when I was just a young chimp, feck knows why but my dad bought me their shirt and since then I've always taken an interest in them.

Man United will win it, Arsenal are a bunch of bottle merchants and nobody else is good enough.

I'm a Tottenham fan...God help me.
I support them because I was born in North London so there you go. My all time favourite players are Glenn Hoddle, Paul Gascoinge, David Ginola and Gary Mabbutt.
I think Man Utd are gonna sneak it. Just a feeling I have.

My home team is FC Flora so I support them and sometimes even go to the games. We won the league last season and will do it again.
As for the premiership I think Arsenal will probably win but I'd like Newcastle to...

I'm rooting for Arsenal and so I'm glad they're doing good this year. If they kick Man Utd butt, then I'm happy -- I mean, Beck is one of the top five players in the world today, Barthez is one of the three best goalies around too, and Giggs and Van Nistelroy sure know how to kick ball, but I hate, HATE Alex Ferguson. And just because of that big tight asshole, every week I pray for Manchester to get their butt kicked. And luckily, this season it's happening more often than usual. :)

Zidane, yes. Ronaldo, yes. Thierry Henry, yes. Roberto Carlos, yes. Pires, Van Nistelroy, Schevchenko, Raul, eventually. But the others? C'mon. Vieira is a fantastic player, yes, probably one of the twenty best players around right now, but not as good as Beck. Roy Keane...you're overrating him. Rivaldo, well, he sure can kick ball, but he's a fuckface, and fuckfaces are disqualified from my top five. ;) Nedved, Ballack and Seedorf are very good players too, but not the best of the best. As for Davids, sure, he's good...but he's got a serious temper and regularity problem.
Beckham's a fantastic player. He can pass the ball, shoot it, lead the game, and of course he's a one-in-a-kind free kick kicker. But the thing that makes him one of the five best around for me is that he can make his team better by just being on the field, and that's something.

patrick viera and roy keane are the two best central midfeilders in the world imo, look at todays game utd against liverpool, becham on the bench not missed one bit,but when keane was missing at the start of the season they were piss weak in midfeild,i hate man utd but can see the difference in them when keane plays, and i can see if becham went he would not be missed.

Figo's good, but he's been slower ever since those knee and leg injuries of his. Ain't the same player anymore.
Patrick Kluivert is also a top-notch player. Same for Dennis Bergkamp who, in my opinion, has gotta be the best damn player in the world NOT to start games...

i am glad you have confidence. however, wolves and the playoffs just do not work well. look at how norwich fucked us last season. mind you, look at how we fucked ourselves last season lol! but i think, if we can go up, there will be enough money chucked at the team to give us a chance of staying up. maybe. even like bottom end of mid-table would be good. and hell, we did do newcastle 3-2 (voodoodoll is gonna kill me for reminding her of that :D:D:D:D:D)

i agree with you pal there are some superb players in the premeirship i just think becham is very overrated ,i think you have some of the best defenders in the world in ferdinand ,woodgate and campell along with ashley cole, and some great young forwards in jeffers, owen, rooney, and vassel but i think the midfeild is week gerrard is limited, scoles inconsistant and becham a one trick pony, and in robinson and kirkland you have 2 great young keepers, but that was never the discussion, the discussion was whether becham was in the top 5 players in the world and i think not.

I agree. The only Real "superstar" I wasn't impressed with was Ronaldo. Figo was immense (of course he meant it......)
The passing of the Real Madrid side was spectacular, they'd waltz the EPL I reckon. They were really ripping the piss for a while.
United's defence was abso-tively, posi-lutely, shocking. How much space can you give players of this quality? Not a whole helluva lot. The space Raul had (the whole bloody tele to himself) for the second goal was ridiculous. Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand were crap, IMO, ball-watching all the time. John O'Shea should start for United, Brown's crap too.
Saying that, I don't want to take anything away from Real, they deserved their three goals - they were a joy to watch for the most part.
Speaking of crazy Frenchmen, he was lucky to get away with the kickout against Robbie C, and really lucky to get away with the handball outside the area.
I suppose, at 3-1, it's not over yet. This 4-5-1 formation is a waste of time, should've started with 2 strikers tonight, and I'm sure he'll play two up front at Old Trafford - hopefully Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and RVN. Will Verón be back? United could've done with him tonight........

6-2 was bad, I'm currently feeling sorry for Sunderland! Being relegated thanks to Birmingham City, now that's bad!
We got a draw with West Ham at Upton Park, according to the bloke on Sky Sports it was a cracker of a match, can't wait for the highlights on The Premiership. Methinks that the teams on 38 points (Leeds, Villa, Fulham and Birmingham) are kinda safe now, although they could be drawn straight back into the fight for Premiership survival.
The table currently looks like this:
1 - Manchester United - 70 pts
2 - Arsenal - 67 pts
3 - Newcastle United - 61 pts
4 - Chelsea - 60 pts
5 - Everton - 56 pts
6 - Liverpool - 55 pts
7 - Blackburn Rovers - 52 pts
8 - Tottenham Hotspur - 47 pts
9 - Middlesbrough - 46 pts
10 - Charlton Athletic - 46 pts
11 - Southampton - 45 pts
12 - Manchester City - 42 pts
-----------<Possible Relegation Places>-----------
13 - Leeds United - 38 pts
14 - Aston Villa - 38 pts
15 - Fulham - 38 pts
16 - Birmingham City - 38 pts
17 - Bolton Wanderers - 35 pts
-----------<Relegation Places>-----------
18 - West Ham United - 32 pts
19 - West Bromwich Albion - 21 pts
-----------<Relegated>-----------
20 - Sunderland - 19 pts
I think that Leeds and Villa will eventually get out of trouble, although both teams face off on the last day of the season. I still think Birmingham have a good chance of dropping, they've gotta play West Ham in their final game. West Ham have got Bolton soon too, which could prove to be a crucial game.

Chelsea down, Newcastle and Everton next up. If we're lucky we'll get a draw with Newcastle (mind you, Fulham beat them yesterday, Legwinski's goal was a cracker!) and we'll scrap out a draw from Everton. Then there's Sunderland (Home) and Leeds (Away) to finish off the season, methinks we can get 8 points max from them games, ending on 49 points. That won't be too bad considering we were in a possible relegation fight one week ago!

I remember seeing Keane play against QPR for Wolves in the Coca-Cola cup a few years back...only his second start. He ran them ragged.
Also he's a hero cause he scored the equaliser against the Germans for my beloved Ireland. I was so drunk that day. When Keane scored I was the only one jumping around delirious, everyone else was a neutral. Got some weird looks. God I miss the World Cup...beer and footy in the morning. Does it get any better than that? :D

its a shame keane outgrew us, i miss his presence. he was, and still is, awesome. our youth training is turning out some real stars now, (matt murray, Jolean Lescott to name but two) and we are promised more players of keanes calibre within the next 5 years.

I have always liked WOLVES they seem too big for Divison 1 but can't actuley make that break well in recent years at least.
However looking at the team with the great experence of INCE and IRWIN who will guide a team hoping to survive the Premiereship traps and the Lescott's of the sqaud who should serve the future.
With this I think the main thing should be sustainabilty DON'T do a Fulham who had a back bone of a determained team but turned it into a star studded primadonna haven.
They should be okay but need to buy a few more bread and butter players.
Saying that I think as well as a couple of wide players that is what Liverpool need a couple more steel nerved defenders to back up Hypia and Henchov a couple of strong no nonesense Midfielders to throw some grit into the center of the park and finaly someone to tell people how Heskey really DOES work hard and may not be a gazel but has the strength of rhino just what you need with a firebrand like Owen.

we may lose ince at the end of the season, i dont know. irwin we might be able to hold onto for another year. i think the future lies with lescott, the fact we have an amazing midfield, and the still untapped potential of Kenny Miller. if we do go up, with a little money, we have a good base to build from.
besides, we cant do as badly as sunderland or WBA have done.

Breaking News (From avfc.co.uk)
BREAKING NEWS: Manager Resignation
The Board of Aston Villa announce that they have accepted the resignation of the manager, Graham Taylor, OBE, with immediate effect.
Graham Taylor said: “Contrary to what may be perceived playing results are not the reason for my resignation and I had always believed that last season was going to be one of transition, particularly in respect of emerging young players.
“I would however point out that modern football, with its well publicised financial pressures, involves much wider issues than mere playing matters and those are a major factor in my decision.”
Doug Ellis, Chairman of Aston Villa, expressed his sadness on behalf of the Board and Club at this resignation and said that the Board would now seek applications from suitable candidates with a view to interviews being held in June so that an appointment could be in place prior to the return of the players for pre-season training.
There will be no further comments from the Club.
Anyone wanna post their thoughts?
Honestly I think this may be a step in the right direction, Taylor used bad tactics (IMO), played players out of position and spent a load of money on Peter Crouch who has really underperformed for us this season (dopey Rodney Trotter :p). This could also be a bad thing though, as it was reported on planetfootball.com that Taylor hinted he may resign if not given the right signals. I just hope that Ellis and Ansell go soon, but I guess that ain't to be

Great day for the tabloids, Robson wants the Villa job (IMO, big no no!), but an even better day now. David O' Leary is the brand new manager of my beloved Aston Villa! This is the news I've been wanting to hear for a while, just checked it out on the official Villa website (www.avfc.co.uk). Here's hoping he can do the same for us as he did for Leeds when they had that great run a few years back.

As a Liverpool fan I want to know if we will sign a striker to partner Owen Heskey is a hard worker but I don't know if he is what we need.
Baros is good but is he good enough for a title challenge and Mellor is still in development.
Finan was a good signing and one that will help our shape but we really do need a few more great signings if we want a piece of the glory this comming season.
Also Murphuy says he wouldn't say no to leaving the KOP...oh shite:(

True, not proven in England and a bit premature for me to tout him as 'proven' in general. I just like the fact that he helped get Porto the Portuguese double last season, as well as the UEFA Cup. That's a fair bit of success and exposure for a 20 year old.
Some stats:
- He netted 6 goals in 6 UEFA Cup games leading up to the final, including 2 against (then) highly-rated Lens, and 1 against Lazio in the semi-final.
- He netted 13 league goals during Porto's title winning 02/03 season, where he came on as a subsitute on 7 occasions.
- From 46 total appearances in 02/03 he scored 19 times.
- From 85 career appearances he has scored 29 times.
And I still think we'll get Kanoute, mate.

Y'know looking at it from another angle I wish my team LIVERPOOL could have followed the example of teams like SPURS and ...somewhere else(can't think of another example of the cuff).
I wish they could have taken a risk on another striker I just read today that Houllier is going to depend on a BAROS/OWEN strike partnership.
Now OWEN is proven and BAROS is certianly a prospect but not as a main strike partner, Not yet.
I still like Heskey despite what others say he works his cauliflour arse off but we need another striker one with a REP.
I think that if we don't get KEWEL we will end up with a couple of rash buys and sell a couple of good players...MURPHEY????
However if the players Houllier brought in the past can play the way he thought they could last this in the next season watch out.

LOL! Overrated because of what you saw of him toward the end of one season? :D
I think he's shown the world time and again how talented he is, with the recent effort against England at Upton Park at the forefront of my mind.
He's hit some wonder-strikes for Leads over the years, he has the speed and guile to take on defenders down the left, and his crossing/passing is excellent. He's the left-winger that your national team so badly wants and needs.

I would love him in the English national side he could really solve a few left sided problems.
Well I didn't think we would get Kewel I knew he was a Liverpool fan but I was under the impression that money would win out.
Well it seems he would rather play for us than any other team now a player with that attiude has the potentional to play at his best.

Kewell'd never come to Spurs - he wants a championship! :D
I shouldn't bag my Spurs, but christ there's no team spirit at the moment! Unfortunately, it seems that when the players get to know Hoddle, they see he's a bit loopy, and lacking in people skills. He's also two-faced, which proves time and again the quickest way to lose respect from players.
I don't think there's any real us vs. them mentality that you need to bring a team together. Hoddle can't get them to play for the shirt. I don't rate him as a good overall manager, and am not surprised he's one of the favourites to get the chop this season. Great player in his day, but those on-field performances mean jack-shit right now.
Let's hope he gets the boot, and that we miraculously find someone who can insert some resolve into the team, coz at present they're just a bunch of individuals.
I've had my say. Feel free to bag the shit out of me now. Bring it! :D

I just don't rate him, hopefully he'll make me eat my season ticket this season but I don't think so. He is a good player when the teams playing well but shys away when the going gets tough. We already have a squad like that!
As for Mabizela if hes a good as everyone says then good luck to the guy! We NEED midfielders.

That would be a coup. Especially when Aresnal, Chelsea and United have been linked to him. Surprised he said he would move to Spurs...C'mon Mark you know you want to!
As for Kanoute, he's injured already! On his day he is a world beater, hopefully with us he'll be like that every game.

Only a 3-4 day thang, so hopefully he'll be right for our thrasing of Birmingham on Saturday week.
Can't believe Chelsea nabbed both Cole and Veron. That's 60mill they've spent pre-season. Gunna look pretty bad when they don't take the title. :D

Seeing as the new football season is just around the corner shouldn't this thread be a sticky or whatever you call it.
I mean we have all the yank sports under the sun on sticky threads were are the sports with a REAL history.....:p

When the new season starts, one of you guys should start a thread and I will STICKY it. Maybe combining both the English football league and the Premiership in one thread, I can't very well STICKY them both, they aren't popular enough.
I don't know, give me your thoughts on this idea. Here are a few questions I have that might help us figure things out. All comments, questions and suggestions are welcome.
1-When does the new season start for both leagues?
2-Will it be too confusing to combine both leagues in a single "STICKY" thread?
3-Which league would garner more attention on this forum?
Thanks :)

The Premier League is the highest of the leagues in England, there isn't a league called the english football league. Just Premiership followed by Division 1 and 2 and 3...

Not at all.
One of you just need to let me know when the season begins and we can start a thread then.

Okay, I've put up a "STICKY" thread in which all of European football can be discussed.
Please direct all further posts there, thank you.
