now football(or soccer to our freinds in the usa) is called football because the object of the game is to kick the ball from player to player until you score a goal, infact the only person who is allowed to touch the ball in open play is the goalie.
so why did you american's decide to call a game in which the object is to either throw the ball to another player, which he catches,or run with it whilst holding it in his hands football, infact the only time the foot is used is for a kick off or a feild goal so why is it not called american handball, can anyone enlighten me please.

Handball was taken.;)
I have no bloody fucking clue, Paul. Good question. Could it be because we're fucked in the head?
Or maybe we wanted to one-up you guys.
because "Rugby for big wimpy girls" didn't sound good on the soundbites. John Madden talking about "handball" would just sound ridiculous, too.

Always said the same thing to everyone...
American Football should be called "handball"
And while we're on the subject, where does the term "soccer" come from?

When ever I have played FOOTBALL I have always found that there exsists a wanna be middle class lad who want's to get in the football culture so they call it soccer.
They usualy support the team in favaour Man utd,Arsenal e.t.c..
This is much like the character in the fast show who said "What if Chelsea got into Europe and had to play England" those kind comments make me lose faith.
I am not trying to 'cause a fracade here but FOOTBALL that was created way before Amercian Rugby deserves the FOOTBALL crown.
You can't say the U.S is right and everyone else is wrong I don't who thinks that American Rugby is more physical than Britiah Ruby tell that to Jonah lumo and Larence delaleao.;)

bleh, we all know that proper football came first. maybe we should take out a court case, another great american tradition, and force the to rename the sport something new ;)

I don't know the exact origin of the word, but I do know that "soccer" actually do from England and is not of American origin.
I saw this in an article during the past World Cup when the rest of the world was whining about how well the United States were doing. Apparently in a column some UK sportswriter blamed us for the word soccer and in the article I read they were setting him straight.
Either way who care soccer vs. football....two different names for a horrible sport.
And yes American football in all the padding still hurts like a son of a bitch.

It comes from the word Association, as in Association Football.
