Looking for recommendation on player

Hopefully going to get a DVD player for the holidays this year. Problem is that I'm poor and I'm not expecting anyone to drop $500 on the system for me. So I'm looking for a relatively cheap player and wanted to know which ones were worth checking out. Any brands/models to definitely stay away from? Any known for good quality and low price?

Toshiba makes the cheapest and best of the cheapest DVD players..they definitely do the job, and since I didn't feel like sticking a $1000 DVD system in each room, I went with a $299 Toshiba for the hottub television and bathroom tv set...
